Quill & Cauldron presents to you a very special 250+ page tome, aimed at both players and dungeon masters.

It is narrated by none other than Ulraunt, the Keeper of Tomes at Candlekeep, and also supports epic level play (as introduced in Epic Characters).

Here is a summary of what you will find:

  • Detailed overviews of three prominent Shadowfell locations: Gloomwrought, Evernight, and Thultanthar, as well as a description of the Fugue Plane.
  • Five Domains of Dread, each with a tragic story tied to a specific Darklord.
  • Statblocks for two powerful elder evils and five well-known deities, complete with lair actions, roleplay guidance, as well as Ulraunt’s own narration of their backstories!
  • Four thematic playable races.
  • Fifteen unique subclasses, including flavor tables to tie your character to aspects of the Plane of Shadow.
  • Over 40 new spells, giving a taste of what arcane secrets lie hidden in the darkest corners of the world.
  • Over 140 new stat blocks for monsters and NPCs native to the Shadowfell, the Fugue Plane, or a Domain of Dread.
  • A monster-generation table intended to help guide the creation of your own CR 30+ monsters (all the way to CR 45), as well as sidebars to help guide creation of deities and avatars.
  • And lots more including unique creature templates, maps, random encounter tables, and notes from other prominent readers of this tome (such as Elminister Aumar).
  • Besides the book itself, you will also find a zip folder containing handouts for your players, as well as a document with links to several surveys regarding the contents of the book.

Changelog

Hi James,

Thank you for your purchase, we hope you'll be getting many happy (or gloomy?) adventures in the Shadowfell.

I just checked it and the file seems to download fine.
You could try using a different browser.
If the issue persists for you, I'd suggest reaching out to OneBookShelf.

Hi James,

I've had this happen to me a couple of times. On my screen, it doesn't indicate "Purchaser" under your name in the Discussion forum here. Maybe the purchase didn't go through. Were you able download v1.0 on this account at least?

If you did purchase it, check your card to see to see if the transaction went through (i.e., if you were actually billed). If it did, and you can download v1.0 but can't even see v1.1, you may need to contact OneBookShelf, as Marc said.

Hi there,

Thank you for your kind words. We tried our very best.

We're still very much working on a POD version though.
Trust me when I say, everybody involved would love to have it displayed on a shelf.

Thank you for the kind words (again) :) This book was very much a labor of love for all three of us. This kind of feedback keeps us motivated and reassured.

Do keep us posted on how you use the material in this book in your own game :) Always love hearing stories.

Currently I have a group of player characters, who have accidentally crossed over into the city of Gloomwrought by staying too long in a dive of a bar long after midnight. When the only patrons left are those looking into the bottoms of their mugs hoping for nothing. And the bard is playing the "go home" music. But they paid no attention and kept ordering round after round, not getting drunker, but far from sober either. A more depressing atmosphere would be harder to find.

As they left they were lured upstairs by something they thought was a Halfling that had just pickpocket one of the players gold and gems

But the Halfling turned out to be different, wild and fought like an fierce animal cornered. On exiting the upper floor the players found that the bar was almost vacant, the night deeper and new patrons had come in, ones looking even more hopeless and drawn to the drink than the previous ones. There was a coldness to the air and the bar air smokey and stale.

ICYMI: Version 1.1 is uploaded now! Six months spent gathering feedback, improving the writing quality and editing, re-balancing a couple of things, developing new monsters, and more!

As mentioned in the changelog, we also added a convenient "Characters Only" document for DMs who wish to share that portion with players. We also prepared virtual table-top tokens to save some time for VTT DMs as well (see the Handouts.zip file).

Please leave us a review and/or fill out one of our surveys in the "Surveys" file! Those really help us shape updates and future books. We consider all feedback very carefully.

Hi Marc,

Is there any chance that
Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes: The Shadowfell will be out in time for Christmas. Would love to have a P.O.D. on my Xmas shopping list.

Also, are you able to give a hint when the next Ulraunt's guide will come out on PDF and a small indication as to what plane will be covered?

It would be fantastic if someone managed to do the FarRealm, and The Mythos in 5E, but that would be a very challenging book, and would take a lot of skill to do. Imaging the ElderGods, outside Gods and Great Old ones finally brought into D&D.

Hi Clive,

No news regarding POD. Still working on it. Will make sure to announce once we know more.
We're actively working on the next installment. Still not quite ready to reveal where we'll be going, but it'll be one of the Lower Planes.
A journey to the Far Realm would certainly be interesting. Until that happens, we'll have a few aberrations popping up here and there. Take a look at the skean, for example, or perhaps the shadevar that makes its debut with v. 1.1.

Hi Callum,

Yes, it's an unfortunate mistake.
You'll see the actual spell described below here.
It will also be updated in the book with v 1.1.
Thank you for reaching out!

Shadow Projection
3rd-level mythic conjuration
Casting Time: 24 hours
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (a piece of the Shadowfell's moon, weighing at least 20 lbs., which the spell consumes)
Duration: Instantaneous
To cast this spell, you need to cast the spell within 5 feet of two other creatures also casting this spell and supplying their own material component. If you are within range of a mythal or mythallar, you can instead draw on its raw magical power to make the casting possible.
For the duration of the casting of the spell, your chanting causes the material components to glow brightly. You continually shape the shadows this light creates with your hands, gathering and weaving them until you’ve finally drawn all nearby shadows into the component,...See more

There's a few typos I've found while using this book. A notable one is on the Tenebrous Arcanist. It's still called "Tenebrous Mage" in the lists of monsters at the end, and its stat block says "daarcanist" instead of "damage".

Hi Damian,

Many of the typos are due to be fixed in version 1.1 (along with several other flavor text edits), which is due to be released VERY soon! The switch from "Mage" to "Arcanist" was a last-minute suggestion I made for layout efficiency, so you can blame me for that inconsistency. Rest assured, several of these minor issues have been combed through for V1.1, and we appreciate you pointing some of them out to us!

Incidentally, how do you handle the playtesting? I noticed it says to say what plane you're interested in but I imagine without a particular focus it'd make it difficult to test enough material for specific planes.

Hi Damian,

The playtest ad doesn't ask about which plane you are interested in, but rather the kind of monsters you'd like to test (CR range, type, etc.), as well as whether you'd be willing to test player options (such as subclasses and spells). We generally only test one plane at a time, but there's always sufficient diversity in the material to encompass a broad range of flavors/tastes.

When we are approached by someone who is interested in testing, we like to get a sense of how they tend to run their games before deciding on what kind of material they can help to test (both in terms of the group's level, as well as the story). It's a very collaborative process. Some DMs incorporate material into ongoing campaigns, whereas others tend to run special one-shots just for testing. A couple of them have also pointed out some general mechanical shortcomings that are apparent from a simple read of a subclass, spell, or stat block. We appreciate any and all help.

Hope that addresses...See more

Loving the book so far. One oddity I noticed though is that the Raven Queen isn't even mentioned in the book. She is a deity of the Shadowfell, any particular reason for her exclusion?

That's due to them not being able to use the Raven Queen. The only deities they can use are the Forgotten Realms deities due to WotC licensing.

Hi Clive,

We're working hard on making v.1.1 which we're very much hoping will come into consideration for POD.
As for Fantasy Grounds, we want to find a solution that makes sense as we'll need help from a third party to do the conversion.

Marc I have a question about the Karsite's abilities. do they seal all magical properties of the weapon their target wields or just the bonus to attack and damage rolls?
Customer avatar
Marc A May 06, 2019 10:08 am UTC
CREATOR
Hi Jason,

The karsites attacks remove all magical bonuses that magical equipment grants.
For example, a flametongue would stop dealing additional fire damage and an adamantine armor would no longer turn critical hits into normal hits.
As per v.1.1 (which isn't done yet) the effect will be described to last 1 hour.

Okay that makes so much more sense! Because there was no time limit given it was either assumed to be permanent (If that was the case why isn't the challenge rating higher? XD) or removed after a short or long rest. The one hour limit does help as I am going to use a modified Karsite against my players.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
