Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes: The Shadowfell

Quill & Cauldron presents to you a very special 300+ page tome, aimed at both players and dungeon masters.

It is narrated by none other than Ulraunt, the Keeper of Tomes at Candlekeep, and also supports epic level play (as introduced in Epic Characters).

Below is a short description of what you will find within each part of the book.

Version 1.1, 14th of June, 2019. Added the shadevar, tzitzimitl, vadataj, and Koschei. Many small corrections and balance fixes based on our surveys. Thank you all for your input. Also added a separate pdf containing the character options, and included virtual table-top tokens in the file.

Version 2.0, 15th of July, 2020. Increased font size and redone entire layout (increasing the book from 260 pages to 350 pages), fixed typos, revised flavor text, many tweaks to various mechanics.

The Shadowfell
  • In-world introductions to various locales by Ulraunt, designed to inspire and create story hooks.
  • Details on three prominent Shadowfell locations
    • Gloomwrought: An ever-changing and seemingly living city, characterized by numerous factions that scheme for supremacy, all ruled by an undying prince.
    • Evernight: A grotesque Shadowfell reflection of the city of Neverwinter, where the living are nothing but food and playthings for the undead that rule supreme.
    • Thultanthar: A floating city that was thought destroyed and now the only remnant of the long-lost Netherese empire, ruled by a shadowy magocracy to this day.
  • Five Domains of Dread, each with a tragic story tied to a specific Darklord.
    • The Burning Peaks: A volcano-filled domain which once held two infamous Darklords destined to be eternally at odds with each other, both of which have since escaped.
    • Har'Akir: A desert domain where the environment itself and the baking sun is as likely to kill an adventurer as the mummified Darklord.
    • Markovia: An island of horrible hybrid creatures and a Darklord who likes to... experiment.
    • Monadhan: A jungle domain of betrayal weighed down by the neverending suffering of its draconic Darklord.
    • Sunderheart: An urban domain of debauchery, duality, and unattainable satisfaction, ruled over by a pair of Darklords which are simultaneously each their own and a single entity.

The Fugue Plane
  • An introduction to the nature of deathjudgment, and the afterlife in the Forgotten Realms, as well as the politics involved between gods and fiends.
  • We explore the City of Judgment, surrounded by the Wall of the Faithless and the Crystal Spire, where the dead are judged, at its center.
Deities and Other Powers
  • We explore 5 deities, including Jergal, Kelemvor, Mask, Shar, and Vecna.
  • Each deity includes nifty tips for roleplaying them, mighty stat blocks, awe-inspiring lairs, and templates for creating versatile avatars.
  • We also uncover truths about 2 elder evils, namely Dendar the Night Serpent and Kezef the Chaos Hound.
Character Options
  • Four new and thematic playable races.
  • Fifteen new and unique subclasses, including flavor tables to tie your character to aspects of the Plane of Shadow.
  • Over 40 new spells, giving a taste of what arcane secrets lie hidden in the darkest corners of the world and beyond.
  • Over 140 new stat blocks for monsters and NPCs native to the Shadowfell, the Fugue Plane, or a Domain of Dread.
  • A monster-generation table intended to help guide the creation of your own CR 30+ monsters (all the way to CR 45), as well as sidebars to help guide creation of deities and avatars.
  • Eight unique characters from the Forgotten Realms or Ravenloft, such as the infamous Kas, the Destroyer and the shadowy Erevis Cale, Chosen of Mask.

Hi there! I don't see the Raven Queen included in this book. I'm just curious as to why she was omitted.

My only suggestions is the art used in the tokens be available in a separate zip file so people can make their own tokens or use them as handouts for players

I hate to be a nuisance but I have to ask again if it's permissible to have our copy of the pdf printed and bound. Some online publishers will do this service, but since this is your intellectual property I feel the need to ask. If not, is there a way to set up a pre-order for for buying a short run of books? Some publishers will do runs of 10 books.

Btw, I loved the Acheron book!

I love this series. Any ideas when this book will get a POD copy? And can you share any hints which will be the next plane covered, or when we can get a taste of it?

This recently got an update with version 2.0. I noticed it's quite a bit longer. Could give me a quick overview of what's new with the update?

Look at the top of the product description. It said that the font was changed a bit, a few typos were corrected, and some mechanics were altered slightly.

Could there be a Blood hunter or artificer subclass in the near-future?

Since there is no printed version of this book, is it acceptable to have one printed and bound for personal use? Places like Bookbaby will so single print and bindings.

Great guide! I'm referencing your material as my players have just arrived in the Shadowfell. One thing i noticed was on page 43, the statblock for "The Eye",
it says its movement speed is 30ft. But, I'm visualizing this "eye" either rolling around on the ground chasing or getting away, or would it have the "fly" status instead.
A flying, floating eye is much more scarier than one rolling on the ground. Thoughts?

Question, are the artwork inside the book available without being attached to the pages? I run Roll20 games and would like to use them as handouts. Was wondering if through the purchase, if there was like a folder of all the images

I also run Roll20 games, and i haven't had a problem just cut and pasting the images from the pdf to something else to make handouts.

The changelog mentions that "virtual table-top tokens were added to the file", are there supposed to be NPC tokens included? If not, what are the tokens intended to be?

May I ask where you pull your lore from, I plan on getting this book in a paycheck or two, but was curious if this is all official lore parsed from older editions, or if it is a bit of official lore backed by your own ideas? I don't mind, either way, I am just very curious as to which. Thank you very much in advance, I look forward to reading this, and the Acheron guide come next Thursday.

Hi Skylar,

Thank you for taking an interest in our material!

We delve through all the information we can find throughout older editions, magazines, interviews, etc. to get an overview.
Ideally, that would be all there is to it. In reality, however, a lot of information is often incompatible or downright contradictory.
That means we have to bend or cut some things, always leaning towards what is official for 5e.
There are also quite a lot of gaps for the planes, where some things are described incredibly vague or not at all, meaning we have to come up with new ways to fill in those blanks.
We also like different planes (and layers) to feel different in terms of its inhabitants, meaning we try to come up with original monsters to populate those places.
A good example of this is in Acheron, where you might notice the fauna changing across the layers, with Avalas having many bird-like creatures, Thuldanin having insectoid creatures, and Tintibulus having aquatic-inspired...See more

It does most concisely, thank you so much for that very clear, thorough and thought out answer. That is exactly what I was hoping for, that you used as much content that didn't cash with current retcons, while adding to it as well, that is perhaps the best way content like this can be done in my opinion, so that you can provide just the right amount of content to the reader, and I can't wait to pick this series up very soon!

Umm..can I go on record and say my shadevar cleric of the grave( the grave domain) has nothing to do with his brethren with what happened in Acheron?
Kinda already working for Jergal at the moment...

Hi Darron,

I'm sorry but I'm not sure I understand.
Also, I imagine you meant to say shadar-kai, not shadevar?

A shadevar(one of three slain) 14th level cleric of grave.
Spirit animated modified warforged, access to legendary actions(save dc is spell save dc) other combat abilities currently offline. Have sunlight hypersensitivity and one trick darkens surrounding area.
Made devil's deal with Jegal to avoid annihilation among other issues so works for the god as an agent.
He's why l had the melt down when thought the shadevar had been removed from the book...

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
