Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes: The Shadowfell

Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes: The Shadowfell

Watermarked PDF

Marching Modron Press presents to you a very special 250+ page tome, aimed at both players and dungeon masters.

It is narrated by none other than Ulraunt, the Keeper of Tomes at Candlekeep, and also supports epic level play (as introduced in Epic Characters).

Here is a summary of what you will find:

  • Detailed overviews of three prominent Shadowfell locations: Gloomwrought, Evernight, and Thultanthar, as well as a description of the Fugue Plane.
  • Five Domains of Dread, each with a tragic story tied to a specific Darklord.
  • Statblocks for two powerful elder evils and five well-known deities, complete with lair actions, roleplay guidance, as well as Ulraunt’s own narration of their backstories!
  • Four thematic playable races.
  • Fifteen unique subclasses, including flavor tables to tie your character to aspects of the Plane of Shadow.
  • Over 40 new spells, giving a taste of what arcane secrets lie hidden in the darkest corners of the world.
  • Over 140 new stat blocks for monsters and NPCs native to the Shadowfell, the Fugue Plane, or a Domain of Dread.
  • A monster-generation table intended to help guide the creation of your own CR 30+ monsters (all the way to CR 45), as well as sidebars to help guide creation of deities and avatars.
  • And lots more including unique creature templates, maps, random encounter tables, and notes from other prominent readers of this tome (such as Elminister Aumar).
  • Besides the book itself, you will also find a zip folder containing handouts for your players, as well as a document with links to several surveys regarding the contents of the book.

I would like to buy a Fantasy Grounds version of this. Any plans?

Hi Arumando,

Not at the moment, no. Sorry.
We might look into it down the road but our first priority is trying to get it to print.

So, I've read through the most of the book. I really do like it, and in fact Vecna is the end boss of my campaign. But, I'm confused. How did you calculate the Armor Class of the deities and Ancient Evils? I tried things like adding 10+Dex+Con or 10+Dex+Spellcasting Ability, but it always came out one less than what their armor class actually was. If you could let me know how you calculated the Armor Class for them, that would be great.

Marc A February 18, 2019 4:39 pm UTC
Hi Dominick,

Thank you for your kind words!
I hope the Whispered One will help you bring a memorable end to your campaign.

As for your question, their AC is calculated as the DMG suggests using Natural Armor.
Here's an excerpt:
"A monster that doesn’t wear armor might have natural armor, in which case it has an AC equal to 10 + its Dexterity modifier + its natural armor bonus.
A monster with a thick hide generally has a natural armor bonus of +1 to +3. The bonus can be higher if the creature is exceptionally well armored.
A gorgon, for example, is covered in steely plates and has a natural armor bonus of +9."

The natural armor bonus of the deities comes from their divinity and is balanced against their other defensive traits.

Thank you, and one more question. On Vecna's stat block on the maimed god trait, it says he gains a bonus to his AC, Saving Throws, and save DCs, and he gains an additional legendary action if he reunited with his eye and hand. I know that he goes up to a CR of 40, and he goes up in proficiency bonus from +10 to +11. Is the bonus to all that just due to being reunited with the eye and hand, or would I have to increase everything by another +1 to everything that would apply? If this is hard to understand I'll try to make it simpler to understand.

I want to learn more about the Shadowfell and was looking at this product and the 4E product Shadowfell: Gloomwrought and Beyond. I would like the 5e stats but I also want a lot of lore. How would you compare your product lore-wise with the 4e product (if you have seen it). Thank you
Customer avatar
Marc A February 10, 2019 8:19 pm UTC
Hi Jeremy,

It's hard to compare the two. Each book has things the other doesn't.
That being said, parts of this book is based on Gloomwrought and Beyond.
In fact, you will find Gloomwrought included in the book, updated for 5e play.

For learning about the Shadowfell in 5e, I very much hope you'll find everything you need in this first volume of Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes. At least, that is what we set out to achieve.

Thank you for the reply. I purchased Ulraunt's Guide and look forward to reading it. Any chance you are working on a Fey realm supplement?
Customer avatar
Marc A February 11, 2019 5:24 am UTC
I hope you'll be happy with your purchase. We'd love to hear your thoughts on it once you've had a chance to read it.
While we've got quite the list of Planes we want Ulraunt to visit, we can't yet say which Plane will be next.

Let me get down to a super legit question that I wanted to ask. You've covered almost everything that was needed to be covered, but what about items? The idea of epic level items would be pretty dope man. Also. I think it would pretty dope is ya did a new subclass for bloodhunter....Like a vampire for instance. A big part of this supplement is like a bloodhunters dream come true lol. Oh! AWESOME JOB BTW! I have loved your take on the epic levels of dnd and the monsters and gods! Keep it up man!
Customer avatar
Marc A February 10, 2019 8:11 pm UTC
Hi Stefan,

Thank you for your kind words!
If there is anything in particular that you liked, disliked, or thought could use improvement, please have a look at our surveys.
You can find links to it in one of the PDFs included with the book. Filling out the survey helps us greatly with figuring out what works and what doesn't.

As for your questions:
We have talked about creating some epic magic items down the road, though we'd want to do it properly. That means defining the foundation for a sensible progression followed by rigorous testing.
So yes, it is on our radar and something we want to do. Sadly, I can't make any promises about it yet.

We'll definitely keep the blood hunter in mind when Ulraunt travels to the next Plane. Great idea, thank you.

Hi, Marc and Marching Modron Press,
I have a quick question. I saw in one of your earlier responses that at some point, you plan on this title being available in a print version like some of your other titles have been. I recognize that this may be premature, but do you have any idea what the timeline for that might be? This guide looks absolutely incredible, but I do a lot better with printed copies than electronic, so I wanted to check.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

Hi Beth,

We want to catch whatever typos and other mistakes made it through before committing to PoD.
We're working hard on version 1.1 which will also include some new content and should be the version that goes to print.
I'd rather not give an ETA though as we'd rather be thorough than fast.

Is it required to have some sort of epic character rules in order to use this? considering the tables for CR 30+ creatures.
Customer avatar
Marc A February 05, 2019 5:50 pm UTC
Hi Matthew,

This is perfectly usable at all levels of play.
While it does support epic level play, as introduced in our Epic Characters title, it is in no way required.

Also while checking out the spells, i'm confused as to which name is true, Darastrien or Dariastren? still waiting for the mythic spell shadow projection correction :)
Customer avatar
Marc A February 05, 2019 5:44 pm UTC
Hi Criss,

It's Dariastren. We're fixing the places where this wasn't correct.
Thanks for letting us know!

Shadow Projection is in the next update which will also hold a few other surprises.
Without revealing too much, let me just say that we'll have a couple of new statblocks ready.

Awesome supplement. Question, for the Shadar-kai, you mention the epic racial ability for the human version of them, but what is the epic racial for the elven version in MToF?
Customer avatar
Marc A February 04, 2019 10:21 pm UTC
Hi Eric,

Thank you very much for your kind words!

You are absolutely correct though, we did not include that.
That's an oversight on my part. I'll make sure to take a look at it and see if we can't include it in the next update.
Thank you for pointing it out to us.

Now that I have read through the book, I can say for certain that it is exactly what I want to see from a supplement like this. The detail given to the Shadowfell and its inhabitants has cemented my desire to see Ulraunt tackle the other planes.

Beyond a few typos, the only thing I have noticed is that The Way of Gravelight Monk has a second 17th level feature listed as "Veracious Brilliance", which seems to be missing.
Customer avatar
Marc A February 01, 2019 4:09 pm UTC
Hi Keenan,

Thank you for your kind words. This is what makes it all worth it to us!

We've tried to get rid of typos but it seems some made it through anyway. Rest assured, we're still on the lookout.
Veracious Brilliance was a feature the Gravelight Monk had at one point which got removed. The reference in the subclass table will be gone with the next update.

We want our titles to be the absolute best they can be and you highlighting our mistakes like this helps us out a great deal. Thank you for that!
If you've got the time and want to give us a helping hand with overall feedback as well, we've included a document that links to several surveys. These surveys are intended to help us with future revisions for Shadowfell as well as crafting future titles.

Just read the whole thing you mentioned about the Raven Queen and Shadar-Kai. Quite a shame. That was primarily the reason I bought this supplementary. Oh well.

Regardless, the effort you put in is astonishing and I look forward to delving further into the book to see things I missed. Really love what you've made so far.
Customer avatar
Marc A January 26, 2019 2:27 pm UTC
Hi Edward,

Thank you for your kind words!
We would love to add the Raven Queen, if the dmsguild license changes to allow it at some point.
Customer avatar
Brian O February 01, 2019 2:54 pm UTC
I've been looking at this because I ended up buying several of your other supplements including the Epic Heroes one. I saw your mention of the Raven Queen, but she is referred to in several of the Guild Adept modules, and even interacted with in them. So, there are people using her on DM's Guild. I don't pretend to know all the rules on Content Creators, so I don't know what your restrictions are, except I believe you are limited to the Forgotten Realms, Ebberon, and I believe Ravnica now.

I'm just pointing out that there are people using the Raven Queen in FR settings.

Marc A February 01, 2019 3:54 pm UTC
Hi Brian,

First of all, thank you for purchasing our other titles. I hope you're satisfied with them!

As for the Raven Queen, I can't say with any certainty what rules apply to the Guild Adepts, but I do know that she is off limits for everyone else.
And you are indeed correct in the settings you mention, except that Ravenloft is also allowed. That's how we managed to get all of the Domains of Dread into this book.

I have been waiting for this supplement for months, and I am happy to say that I got what I wanted for the most part. The Gods and most of the Legendary Creatures are exceptionally well done, but I found that what I felt like I TRULY needed was basically absent, what I need to run an epic level campaign is not scores upon scores of legendary monsters but a robust repository of high CR standard foes to provide the meat of the encounter. I was disappointed to find that such enemies were virtually non-existent, the Vudoklak is the highest CR Regular monster in the book, and I am happy to have it, but I'd have loved a larger share of elite CR 20+ and above standard monsters tied in with the more powerful ones to make for more complete encounters.

I am hoping for more of those in future updates of this book and in future supplements, I will buy whatever your team puts out of course since your work is always comparable in quality to actual sourcebooks. But I think there's still a ways to go before I could...See more

Hi Njål,

First of all, thank you for your kind words.
Regarding more standard monsters at high CRs, we tried to fit in as many as we could. One limiting factor was, of course, the Shadowfell itself.

We did tie a bunch of monsters with greater monsters, in an attempt to do exactly what you suggest.
The vukodlaks tie in with the apotheosized vukodlak. The nosferatus tie in with the nosferatu lord. Almost any type of vampire, as well as the blackstar knights, tie in with Kas. The tomb guardians and the necrosphinx tie in with the hunefer. Winterwights tie in with the shadow of the void.
There's also the sorrosworn and the nightshades which should be able to fill the role as standard foes. Three to four skeans can also be astonishingly annoying to deal with, even for high-level characters. And of course, a brujah in your game might have teamed up with another of its kind, making them capable of decimating almost any party.

We also needed some threats at...See more

I've taken the Monster Survey, I am happy to hear that my feedback is being considered and while I am at it I would love to give a more specific form of it. One of my favourite parts of the book is towards the very beginning where you outline what exactly defines Lesser and Greater Deities, Primordials, Elder Evil and Great Old Ones. I was, however, a bit disappointed at the lack of similar guidelines for Chosen and Demigods.

For the future I think it would also be great if you included some sort of simple system to make High CR legendary creatures such as Liches into standard monsters in a quick and efficient fashion so that a greater variety of encounters might be supported right out of the gates, perhaps by giving them the ability to use multiaction instead. Since my worry with legendary creatures is the sheer overwhelming number of actions that just compound and compound as you add more such creatures, this would especially be an issue when facing a Shadow of the Void and Winterwights.

This and your Epic Characters book has given me so many ideas for encounters for my level 20 campaign. I was having a hard time figuring out what to throw against my level 20 party and I am so glad I found your Epic Characters book. I was eagerly awaiting one of Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes to see what epic monsters or deities looked like. However I'll admit I'm a bit saddened that the Raven Queen wasn't featured in this book as I was looking forward to seeing what she was capable of. Despite that I am quite pleased with what's in this book as my campaign is rather undead heavy for the moment.

Marc A January 26, 2019 1:24 am UTC
Hi Jason,

Thank you for your kind words!
I'm very happy that you find both Ulraunt's and Epic Characters to your liking.

We would have loved to include the Raven Queen here also.
Sadly, the dmsguild license doesn't allow us to include material from all settings.

After you've tried out a few monsters in your game, we would love to hear your thoughts about them. What you liked and what you disliked.
We've included a document with links to a few surveys. If you find the time to answer a few questions there, it would help us greatly in our efforts going forward.

Hi Mark!

I would have no problem doing that. Unfortunately my level 20 session already has every combat more or less planned out but some of these new creatures have definitely inspired me to make a level 30 session.

Thank you for the kind words, it means a lot to us.

Hi Marc, any plans for a print on demand as you did for "Monsters of the Orient"
Customer avatar
Marc A January 25, 2019 9:57 am UTC
Hello Clive,

First, we wanted to gather some feedback on the book and perhaps make some corrections based off of that.
Not to mention, we needed to see just how much demand there even was for a book like this.
But yes, absolutely. We do want to make it available as PoD.
Customer avatar
clive S January 25, 2019 10:35 am UTC
Thank you Marc,

I bought the pdf copy of Monsters of the Orient (and for heroes of the Orient), I liked them so much and then 2 months later bought the print on demand for Monsters of the Orient (and will do so for Heroes of the Orient if it ever is available as Print on Demand). Monsters of the Orient was stunning in hard copy.

I am buying the PDf of Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes: The Shadowfell

I hope that the demand for Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes: The Shadowfell grows sufficiently to allow Print on Demand as I would definitely love to purchase that.

I am also looking froward to Ulgraunt's next Guide.

Thank you for putting such nice quality products out there.

I would love to see this with a Feywild version. Considering how there is almost zero Feywild material in 5e.
Customer avatar
Marc A January 25, 2019 9:53 am UTC
Hi Alexander,

Ulraunt loves to travel and he might very well visit the Feywild as well. In fact, we would love to make this a reality.
In his next book, however, he'll be going to one of the Lower Planes. In fact, Ulraunt has begun writing it already.
I can't reveal which Plane quite yet, but I can promise that it'll include many interesting locations, deities, and monsters in a unique environment.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
