Quill & Cauldron presents to you a very special 250+ page tome, aimed at both players and dungeon masters.

It is narrated by none other than Ulraunt, the Keeper of Tomes at Candlekeep, and also supports epic level play (as introduced in Epic Characters).

Here is a summary of what you will find:

  • Detailed overviews of three prominent Shadowfell locations: Gloomwrought, Evernight, and Thultanthar, as well as a description of the Fugue Plane.
  • Five Domains of Dread, each with a tragic story tied to a specific Darklord.
  • Statblocks for two powerful elder evils and five well-known deities, complete with lair actions, roleplay guidance, as well as Ulraunt’s own narration of their backstories!
  • Four thematic playable races.
  • Fifteen unique subclasses, including flavor tables to tie your character to aspects of the Plane of Shadow.
  • Over 40 new spells, giving a taste of what arcane secrets lie hidden in the darkest corners of the world.
  • Over 140 new stat blocks for monsters and NPCs native to the Shadowfell, the Fugue Plane, or a Domain of Dread.
  • A monster-generation table intended to help guide the creation of your own CR 30+ monsters (all the way to CR 45), as well as sidebars to help guide creation of deities and avatars.
  • And lots more including unique creature templates, maps, random encounter tables, and notes from other prominent readers of this tome (such as Elminister Aumar).
  • Besides the book itself, you will also find a zip folder containing handouts for your players, as well as a document with links to several surveys regarding the contents of the book.

Changelog

Version 1.1, 14th of June, 2019. Added the shadevar, tzitzimitl, vadataj, and Koschei. Many small corrections and balance fixes based on our surveys. Thank you all for your input. Book looks great! Have given it a quick read through and am excited to dive in. Quick question for you, is there a link to the Handout Zip in the files? I didn't seem to get the zip folder when I purchased the book and downloaded.

Are there any player version of the maps that have been made? I want to use the maps in the book but so far all i can find are the ones with numbers on each location.

I do have a question. One of the books says its was done by Marching Modron Press and one syas it was done by Quill and Cauldron or maybe those are the publishers. But my question is since there are two different names which one is the most current book to read?

I have to say that this book Rocks!!! I had always wanted to have a way to make the shadowfell invade the material realm and this book will allow me to do that. I had a little hiccup at first with the Raven Queen not being able to be provided but SHAR works even better than the Raven Queen. Her background fits perfectly for why she would want to come back to the material plane and the fact that the man in charge of the floating city makes a perfect way for the city to invade the material realm and start spreading the Shadowfell presence. I cant wait to read the rest of i and all it has in it to really put in the feel of an invading force. I cant wait to read any other books you have on other planes of existence.

Hi Jayme,

As Marc has explained below, the DMsGuild administrators are only considering PoD options for new releases (as of summer last year). I'm not sure when this policy will change, if it does at all.

In more positive news, our next book (Acheron) IS in consideration for PoD! We've already sent it in for PoD compatibility review, so keep your fingers crossed!

Would you be able to give any advice for creating stat blocks for gods? I'm doing my best to create stats for my version of the Dark Seldarine but I'm not quite sure how racial gods should differ from others, or how war and magic gods differ in build from other gods that are primarily martial or casters.

Hey Callum,

Our next book (to be released soon) will contain plenty of examples for you to base your design off of. We cover the goblinoid, duergar, and orc pantheons in there.

On a more fundamental level, the racial gods do not differ from other gods as much as you might expect. We do our best to focus on their portfolios rather than their race. For example, while Bahgtru may be an orc god of strength, most of his features and abilities revolve around his portfolio of strength, instead of just "orcs only." While some regional effects of his lair might be more stereotypical of an orc, we try not to limit his actual abilities and influence to just orcs. He would be a good model for designing any god of strength in your home game.

For your own design, just look at racial traits and see if they can't be wrapped into other traits. For example, if you have a drow god of magic, it may not need the Innate Spellcasting trait if its own Spellcasting trait captures those...See more

So, for example, the Drow God of Thieves, Vhaeraun, is canonically extremely similar to Mask, so what I did was copy the stat block and then change his weapon damage and effects to match Vhaeraun’s weapons, and included the spells from the Drow innate spellcasting trait in his spellcasting. I’m wary of doing this though because, by basing stats off of the “builds” in the Shadowfell guide, I run the risk of robbing them of their individuality :/

This book as a TON of great material and since it covers some Domains of Dread is a great boon for those of us that still play Ravenloft without any offical support. I am a bit perplexend by some monsters CR being so high, but I suppose their context is within a world were the stats of some demon lords or deites (Thinking about Demogorgon from MgtF or Tiamat as statted in tiranny of dragons) are supposed to be way higher than the official stats we have; still they are all very interesting and creative, and can be a great ispiration even for non-epic games (if there was a separate stat block for non-epic campaings it would have been the best, but it is honestly too much to ask to a non-official book that in many ways feels better than some canon material)

Hi Iacopo,

Thank you for your extremely kind words!

We discussed having non-epic versions of deities, elder evils, etc. but it felt off for some of them. Instead, we opted to include avatars where it makes sense.
Having multiple stat blocks for each deity could also rob them of some of their epicness.
However, epic monsters can easily be included for storytelling purposes in non-epic games. At least that's our rationalization.

Hello Marc, thanks for your swift reply.
Yes, I imagined that it was also because of the need to keep epic things epic. I love what you did with the avatars, having them as templates its a very intriguing system that gives a lot of possibilities to include deities at any level and I am fighting against the temptation to put avatars everywhere in my current Forgotten Realms campaign!
Anyway, what I said it's a minor issue, I think it's more important to have interesting stat blocks with strong narrative possibilities that if needed can be downscaled a bit by the individual DM; also, uber-monsters are a lot fun to read even if I may not end up using them, just a single one can inspire a whole campaing. Can't wait to see a statted Primordial from you guys.

I have a few questions if you don't mind answering.

Why was the Raven Queen not mentioned, I really love her as a goddess.

Why was Ravenloft and a few of the other Dread Domains not mentioned?

I would honestly love you guys to make full on campaigns of Drakon, or The Wild Lands, or some of the other Dread Domains, or even of this content in general. I know this is material for US the DM to make into
an actual story but I would love to see your take on it for sure!

I love the content you guys make hope to see more soon!

Also please make this for Fantasy Grounds!!!

Hi James,

Thank you for your kind words, it means the world to us!

We would have loved to include the Raven Queen.
Sadly, we can't include her because she is from a setting that isn't allowed on the dmsguild.

As for the Dread Domains, we chose some that we wanted to delve into, some well-known and some not so much.
We wanted them to feel very different thematically.
We actually do mention Ravenloft in the intro of Chapter 3, though detailing it felt unnecessary with Curse of Strahd being available.
Beyond that, we couldn't feasibly delve into every single Dread Domain.

As for creating full campaigns, we would love to do something like that. Unfortunately, we aren't really adventure writers.
We did, as you rightfully point out, however, try to give DMs as many tools as we could, to make it as easy as possible to create campaigns.
I would love to see somebody else publish an adventure that takes place in one or more of these...See more

Is it intentional that the gods all have three 9th level spell slots and two 10th level? Asking because it lists them as 30th level spellcasters but 30th level full casters would only get two and one without mythic boons.

Hi Callum,

Deities do, in fact, differ a bit due to their divinity.
Mostly for flavor reasons than anything else though, giving a slight nod mythic boons being able to increase a character's power beyond what's otherwise achievable.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
