Ulraunt's Guide to the Planes: The Shadowfell

Quill & Cauldron presents to you a very special 300+ page tome, aimed at both players and dungeon masters.

It is narrated by none other than Ulraunt, the Keeper of Tomes at Candlekeep, and also supports epic level play (as introduced in Epic Characters).

Below is a short description of what you will find within each part of the book.

Changelog

Version 1.1, 14th of June, 2019. Added the shadevar, tzitzimitl, vadataj, and Koschei. Many small corrections and balance fixes based on our surveys. Thank you all for your input. Also added a separate pdf containing the character options, and included virtual table-top tokens in the Handouts.zip file.

The Shadowfell

  • In-world introductions to various locales by Ulraunt, designed to inspire and create story hooks.
  • Details on three prominent Shadowfell locations
    • Gloomwrought: An ever-changing and seemingly living city, characterized by numerous factions that scheme for supremacy, all ruled by an undying prince.
    • Evernight: A grotesque Shadowfell reflection of the city of Neverwinter, where the living are nothing but food and playthings for the undead that rule supreme.
    • Thultanthar: A floating city that was thought destroyed and now the only remnant of the long-lost Netherese empire, ruled by a shadowy magocracy to this day.
  • Five Domains of Dread, each with a tragic story tied to a specific Darklord.
    • The Burning Peaks: A volcano-filled domain which once held two infamous Darklords destined to be eternally at odds with each other, both of which have since escaped.
    • Har'Akir: A desert domain where the environment itself and the baking sun is as likely to kill an adventurer as the mummified Darklord.
    • Markovia: An island of horrible hybrid creatures and a Darklord who likes to... experiment.
    • Monadhan: A jungle domain of betrayal weighed down by the neverending suffering of its draconic Darklord.
    • Sunderheart: An urban domain of debauchery, duality, and unattainable satisfaction, ruled over by a pair of Darklords which are simultaneously each their own and a single entity.

The Fugue Plane

  • An introduction to the nature of death, judgment, and the afterlife in the Forgotten Realms, as well as the politics involved between gods and fiends.
  • We explore the City of Judgment, surrounded by the Wall of the Faithless and the Crystal Spire, where the dead are judged, at its center.

Deities and Other Powers

  • We explore 5 deities, including Jergal, Kelemvor, Mask, Shar, and Vecna.
  • Each deity includes nifty tips for roleplaying them, mighty stat blocks, awe-inspiring lairs, and templates for creating versatile avatars.
  • We also uncover truths about 2 elder evils, namely Dendar the Night Serpent and Kezef the Chaos Hound.

Character Options

  • Four new and thematic playable races.
  • Fifteen new and unique subclasses, including flavor tables to tie your character to aspects of the Plane of Shadow.
  • Over 40 new spells, giving a taste of what arcane secrets lie hidden in the darkest corners of the world and beyond.

Bestiary

  • Over 140 new stat blocks for monsters and NPCs native to the Shadowfell, the Fugue Plane, or a Domain of Dread.
  • A monster-generation table intended to help guide the creation of your own CR 30+ monsters (all the way to CR 45), as well as sidebars to help guide creation of deities and avatars.
  • Eight unique characters from the Forgotten Realms or Ravenloft, such as the infamous Kas, the Destroyer and the shadowy Erevis Cale, Chosen of Mask.

Hi, I’m enjoying your books, and I have a question. Epic levels have slots for spell levels 10-12 but I can’t find any spells at that level? Are the slots just for upcasting?

A physical version of this would be at the top of my purchase list.
Any word if/when that might happen? What does that take to happen?

Definitely would get a physical version if it came out. Though I do have a question, the spell withering bolt doesn't say that the target takes half damage on a successful save, which makes me think they take full damage even on success. Is it meant to be this way or an error? Read through it more carefully and it's an attack roll for damage with a save on a hit for secondary effects.

Hi Noah,

First of all, thank you for your kind words!

As for Withering Bolt, you are indeed correct. It's one of the relatively few spells that have both an attack roll and a saving throw on a hit.

Spelling error on page 121, Dhampyr feature - Dark whispers, used then instead of the.

If there's a better place to report errors, let me know!

Great product, production quality is out of this world! One question though, is it just me or is the Raven Queen not mentioned even once? I'd be curious to know to about her relationship with the other diving denizens of the Shadowfell.

The Raven Queen is in a setting that isn’t allowed on the DMSGUILD, so It would go against the Creative Commons license. (TLDR: The PDF would be removed if she was included)

Didn't the Raven Queen got added on MORDENKAINEN'S TOME OF FOES? I thought that counted as part of the Forgotten Realms. There is even a quote by High Lady Alustriel Silverhand about her and the Shadar-kai.

Hi Victor,

Liz is correct in her statement.
What WotC publishes in their works is completely separate from what we are allowed to publish here.
WotC can, of course, do whatever they want with their IP. We can't. We can only use what they specifically allow us to use.

I have a question about the "Reactive Casting" feature from the Bronze Lich. With this ability can she essentially cast counter spell as many times as she wants in a round so long as she has to spell slots to cast it or does she only gain one reaction back?
Customer avatar
Marc A April 01, 2020 9:44 pm UTC
CREATOR
Hi Jason,

No, she can indeed continue to do so whenever she successfully casts it.

Note, that there are a few ways around it.
The obvious thing to do is to cast spells outside of the range of her counterspell.
You could, however, also counterspell her counterspell. In that case, her spell would be interrupted and she thus wouldn't have cast it successfully, thereby not regaining her reaction.
Heck, you could even cast antimagic field on yourself and then run in and grapple her.
Also, she might use her reaction for other things such as her Seed of Darkness reaction.

It's a feature that's intended to mess with the usual strategies that adventurers like to employ.
Parties that can fight a creature with that high a CR often require a little extra besides "just" higher statistics.
In fact, that's often what makes a fight memorable and rewarding.
At least that's what we hope to achieve.

Oh I see, she has to be successful on her casting of the spell for her to get her reaction back. She can't just counterspell spells endlessly unless she succeeds to begin with?
Customer avatar
Marc A April 02, 2020 2:22 pm UTC
CREATOR
Exactly.
Counterspell interrupts the casting of a spell. So it will never be cast.
Assuming the counterspell is successful, of course.

She does have the potential to counterspell endlessly, however.
But a smart party might be able to outwit her.

Osterneth will challenge a group of four level 20 characters on her own, which rare for any sub-CR 30 solo boss in 5e. She received considerable playtest attention during our 14+ months of development.

This also makes her easier to run compared to other boss monsters who need several minions (which can be difficult for a DM to wrangle).

Hi Jon,

Appreciate the kind words!

DMsGuild has shifted their policy to doing PoD by invite only (and they seem to be prioritizing newer releases). Realistically, it might be several months before this gets to PoD, if at all.

If you want to support us in the meantime, please considering purchasing the .pdf. It may not be the same thing, but it will enrich your games nonetheless, and every purchase helps us fuel newer books in the series. The .pdf is also watermarked for easy navigation!

So, I’ve mentioned earlier that Vecna was the end boss of my last campaign. However, I’ve gone back to his stat block a lot, and I’ve also gone back to Critical Role’s fight with Vecna. I’ve noticed a lot of similarities between the two. The lair actions are almost exactly the same. The armor class is the same, legendary resistances, vulnerability to damage from the Sword of Kas (I know that wasn’t actually stated in Critical Role, but Vecna looked afraid from the Sword of Kas, so it’s obvious it does something to him). How much inspiration did you take from Matt Mercer’s Vecna? If any?
Customer avatar
Marc A March 16, 2020 9:56 pm UTC
CREATOR
Hi Dominick,

A lot of it comes from a deep dive into the lore and the mechanics of a regular lich, making similarities unavoidable.
We actually completed the Vecna stat block before we listened to the fight in question and were astounded by the similarities as well.
The only thing we really took inspiration from (and added in towards the end of development) was the lair action that tears apart the lair.
The cool-factor of that lair action was too inspiring to leave out.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
