Xanathar's Guide to Barovia: Gothic Horror Spell Alterations

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Xanathar's Guide to Barovia: Curse of Strahd Cosmetic Alterations for Xanathar's Spells supplies your DM toolkit with altered spell descriptions befitting the Ravenloft setting. Not only does describing spell effects deepen the immersion your players will feel, but injecting the marks of horror into storytelling is a crucial part of DMing Curse of Strahd.

A few examples:

Ceremony: When you perform the Atonement rite, the target creature hears a sinister, knowing chuckle in their mind. When you perform the Funeral Rite ceremony, the target corpse’s eyes open and the body releases a sigh as if relieved. When you perform the Wedding rite, the target adult humanoids receive a letter of congratulations from Strahd as well as a trinket from the Gothic Trinkets table in Appendix A.

Find Greater Steed: The summoned steed is undead—not a celestial, fey, or fiend—and is immune to features that turn undead. A bonded mount can be re-summoned, but still bears the wounds of previous injury despite all hit points being restored and any conditions removed.

Healing Spirit: The intangible spirit looks like transparent undead or fiend and points a single finger toward the party member closest to 0 hit points.

BRUH. It took me three hours, a half dozen Xanathar books, and 17 browser tabs to figure out that your "Gothic Trinkets table in Appendix A" is in fact located..
in CoS.
Please.. for love all that is holy.. add that little tidbit to your book.

Also, there are dozens of Xanathar books now. You MIGHT want to specify WHICH one your spells are sourced from. Newbies won't even instinctively know which ones to check first. ;)

Quick question: does this do all of the spells, or just a subset of them?

Just a subset—like the suggested cosmetic changes in the CoS module itself, not all spells make sense to be altered. Thirty-four Xanthar's spells are given aesthetic updates, mostly focusing spells with utility outside of combat.

And if I read this correctly, this is only for the spells in Xanthar’s?

Yes, it is only for the spells in Xanathar's. The CoS module suggests changes to PHB spells, so those were not included here.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
