Ninja (Roguish Archetype)

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $1.00

The ninja subclass for rogues is the first entry in my series on "hybrid classes" for D&D 5e. The ninja combines the monk and rogue subclasses along with a list of ninja "techniques" which can be selected throughout leveling up in a similar fashion to battlemaster maneuvers.

Additionally, this subclass includes rules for the katana, a longsword variant with the finesse property, usable by characters of the ninja and samurai subclasses.

I just found this. A neat thing, but:
What are the rules for multiclassing with monk (or any other Ki-granting class, should someone have a very lenient DM)?

The step of the wind technique is essentially redundant, considering the fact that Rogues can dash, disengage or hide as a bonus action from their Cunning Action feature (essentially for free), so the only useful thing is the doubled jump distance... but that's rather weak on its own. Maybe throw in a passive slow fall and give the full distance without the run-up?

Two things about the ninja techniques. First, "step of the wind" is superfluous, seeing as how the rogue already has cunning action, which allows them to do the exact same thing, but without wasting any ki in the process. Second, "bukijutsu" should make the chosen weapon a ninja weapon for you, even if it normally doesn't qualify.

Once you make those changes, go back to the list of ninja weapons and change the katana to the longsword (I know, it's kind of just semantics, and I get that you're trying to add flavor, but lots of people don't know that the katana officially uses the longsword's statistics in 5e). While you're at it, you should also add wording that allows the longsword/katana to be used for sneak attack.

Also, ninjas are sometimes depicted as using bows (shortbows, presumably) and sometimes blowguns. You might want to add those to the ninja weapon list, too.

Love this subclass. It's very well designed and can't wait to take it for a spin in my campaign. My only question is regarding the 17th level ability to regain 2 ki points if starting a new combat with zero ki points. Being this is unlikely to happen, due to gaining Ki back with 30 mins of meditation, I think something more impactful would make more sense.

I apologize for all the recent updates that may be showing up, I am new to the site and trying to figure out the update process, please use the most recent version as it had a rule clarification for the "rapid teleportation" technique.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
