Harlequin 1.3.5: Martial Caster Class

Suggested Price $0.00

This is a class expansion for Dungeons and Dragons: 5th Edition. Some of the spells mentioned are found in Xanathar's Guide to Everything, although no other supliment or expansion is required for effective play. Includes 28 pages in PDF format containing:

  • 1 class (Harlequin)
  • 10 class archetypes (Aerosaltant, Celestial Choir, Cloud Dancer, Faerie Theatre, Mourning, Red Dragon, Silent One, Smiling One, Solitaire, Splitting Image)
  • 80 unique abilities and features
  • 80 new cantrips
  • 12 themed magical items
The Harlequin is a jester themed martial melee class with a modified cantrip casting system, able to morph cantrips together to create unique combinations. With the addition of eighty brand new cantrips, this grants you the ability to shape your own cantrips designed to combo with your class features. With an emphasis on mid-range maneuverability and mobility, this opens a brand new approach to a damage dealing character.
Any and all feedback you have to offer is greatly appreciated. This is an ongoing project and improvements are always being made to make this class the best in can be. Thank you again for all your support, and big thanks to the Adventuring Guild, Braydon, David, Janessa, and Miles for their invaluable feedback.

HARLEQUIN CHANGELOG: (Updated 07/09/19)
Update 1.1.3 - Discord can now be used to combine one primary and two secondary cantrips into one at 10th level. A number of small fixes and tweaks to various cantrips. This includes Chaos Ladder, Epic Poem, Last Confession, Mirroring, Rose Pedals, Silent Word, Spectral Slash, Transfix, Updraft, Volted Veil, and Widower.
Update 1.1.4 - Pseudonym changed from a subrace option to a harlequin feat. Restrictions placed on the amount you can alter your persona in a given amount of time. Dance of Death progression has been altered for a more gredual attack increase. The material disconnect for Empty now requires a creature be 15 feet of the ground, rather than 5 feet. Rising Action and Rush can now only be used a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier.
Update 1.1.5 - Cantrip gain rate has been balanced. Glimmer Glaive now deals d10 force damage on a non-charmed target (up from d8). Rose Petals now lets temporary hit points stack each turn, guaranteeing 4 temporary hit points per roll of a 4. Void Step now cannot be targeted at a creature in three-quarters cover. Duplicitous now deals d6 force damage on a hostile target (down from d8). Lingering Kiss now deals d6 necrotic damage instead of 4. The range on Spectral Slash has now been fixed (for real this time). Damage increase is now consistent at both range tiers.
Update 1.1.6 - Dance of Death: Rush, Dance of Death: Cry, Wounding Wail, and Phase Shift all received massive buffs. Each is now scaled based on Harlequin level rather than Charisma modifier or a flat figure, massively increasing their effectiveness at higher levels. Includes a number of small balances to cantrip damage.
Update 1.1.7 - Characters can now select a Fighting Style at 2nd level, giving them access to Duelist, Great Weapon Fighting, and Two Weapon Fighting. This will hopefully increase the martial potential of the harlequin. Additionally, the Reaper feature for Solitaire can now be used in tandem to offhand attacks.
Update 1.2 - "SACRED FLAME" UPDATE - Two new subclasses have been added to the Harlequin class: The Celestial Choir and The Red Dragon. The Celestial Choir acts as a support variation upon the standard build, offering quick and mobile healing to your allies. The Red Dragon is an avatar of carnage and destruction, dealing large amounts of damage with their various fire based abilities.
Update 1.2.1 - The Mourning has received a number of small changes, including a damage increase to Overwhelmed. The Celestial Choir now gains Word of Radiance as a bonus cantrip, rather than Sacred Flame. The Solitaire has had the Mind Matter cantrip removed and replaced with the Antimatter cantrip. The Harlequin now gains an additional Ability Score Improvement at 14th level.
Update 1.2.2 - New subclass has been added to the Harlequin class: The Aeroslaltant. This archetype acts as a basic option for new players to pick up and quickly use, offering improvements to the base capabilities of the class, as well as simple to use cantrips. In addition, the two final class features for harlequin have been updated to offer better play at higher levels. A table of contents has also been added with functional links in the PDF.
Update 1.3 - "ONE BAD DAY" UPDATE - Two new subclasses have been added to the Harlequin class: The Silent One and The Smiling One. The Silent One is a powerful conjurist, able to create invisible items to protect its allies and harm to its enemies. The Smiling One is chaos embodied, able to deal out large amounts of damage at the cost of it's own sanity. In addition, there have been several balancing changes to existing cantrips, as well as updates to the Discord mechanic, and a new feature for The Splitting Image called Keeper of Secrets. Not listed are a number of balancing and quality of life changes.
Update 1.3.1 - Resource abilities have been balanced to three uses on a short rest, rather than two. Rate of primary and secondary cantrip gain has been altered slighty. Smiling One has had its cantrips fixed after older versions were accidentally posted.
Update 1.3.2 - Psudenom is now a 1st level feature, rather than an seperate feat. All harlequins understand Pantomime. 12 new magical items are now available. These masks are designed to compliment different playstyles, as well as enhance already present features.
Update 1.3.3 - Faerie Theatre has recieved a major rework of its features. This includes Rising Action, Turning point, Word Play, Falling Action, and Final Resoloution. The Silent One no longer uses telpathy, but instead makes use of Pantomime. Solitaire can now use Reaper as a free action. The damage scaling for Smiling One has been reduced.
Update 1.3.4 - A bunch of small, quality of life changes. Despite being over a year old, there are still a number of hidden grammer errors. Reaper (solitaire) was changed yet again.
Update 1.3.5 - Majority of cantrips were fixed after discovering some broken wording that allowed for major exploitation. Faerie Theatre and Solitaire Cantrips received some small changes to make them more distinct from similar cantrips.

I absolutely love this class. I do have a quick question in regards to multiclassing or if someone takes the magic initiate feat. Would any of the other classes attack cantrips count as primary or secondary cantrips for the usage of harlequin class Discord ability?

This Class is absolutely mind-blowingly creative and flavorful. I do have one question,If i wanted to add Homebrew Cantrips to the list of spells, what criteria would those cantrips have to fulfill to get in?

Thank you so much, and sorry for getting back to you so late.
If you want to import your own Homebrew Cantrips into either the primary or secondary lists, the only things to keep in mind are that it must affect a targeted creature when the spell is cast. Either an attack roll or an ability saving throw will be required, which means it can't be a utility cantrip. The last thing is simply that a cantrips can't result in any sort of healing, aside from temporary hit points.

Hi, I just had a question, isn't the 13th level feature Reflexive Gust on the Troupe of the Cloud Dancer written backwards? It says on a failed save they get disadvantage and on a successful save they completely miss?

Thank you for letting me know about this potential confusion. I'll revise this as soon as possible.

Hey, Lydia! First and foremost I wanted to applaud your creativity and ability to tell a story within a "technical" document. The Harlequin is the most unique class on this site. It is so easy to make something like this sound like a reflavored bard, but you went far and beyond to really make this class stand on it's own two feet.

Beyond my praise, I have a quick question: is there a copy-and-paste-friendly/printer-friendly version of the class? Am I missing it, I downloaded this with a series of other documents, so I might've missed it. If so, I'm sorry for taking up your time!

Thank you so much for the kind words. ^-^
As for your question, I had not made a copy-and-paste-friendly/printer-friendly version of the class. I'll need to work more on a copy-and-paste document, but I've managed to upload a printer friendly version until then. I appreciate you bringing this to my attention.

Thank you so much! :D The printer-friendly version seems to work well for us copy-and-pasters lol

Hello! First of all, I'd like do say that I absolutely love this class and that you've done a great job with it. I am not an expert in balance, but I do think I can give my opinion on the one thing that I kinda know about: cantrips. I don't know if it's intended, but some of them are definitely more powerful than the standard official ones. This is just my opinion, but here are my suggestions on how to make some of them more in par with the official ones:

Skyfall: I think having the ability to knock someone prone from 45 ft away is too powerfuf, prone grants advantage on attacks against the target made while within 5 ft of it, meaning you could give all of your party's attacks advantage and also deal damage. Remember, true strike is a thing (even though it's bad) and it only gives 1 of YOUR attacks advantage. A good solution for this would be to allow the target to use its reaction to stand up, that way, even though he isn't prone, he loses his reaction.

Vacuum: Absolutely broken, you...See more

This is an amazing piece of design work, inspired a new villain for the campaign I am running. Question, would you be interested in getting in contact with me, as I am doing the leg work to put this class into Fantasy Grounds, and would give the mod to you to also put up for people to find.

Thank you. I'm glad this class could help give shape to your ideas, even if only a little bit. While I'm flattered by the offer, I will admit that I have never really used Fantasy Grounds. I'm not sure exactly what your proposal entails, but I would be more than happy to talk about it further. Also, if it also helps, it might be worth also redownloading the PDF file. It's mostly just small grammar fixes. I tend to make sure it's as up to date as I an manage.

Yea. So, Fantasy Grounds has a feature that auto fills character features for players as they add levels to their character from classes within modules they have loaded, to make these modules you add in the features and the class, into the system and export them by themselves. Fantasy Grounds also had the feature Roll20 only recently gained in dragging spells onto a character sheet adds them to the sheet and all of the spell information with it (They had this years before Roll20 did).

My offer was, that Since I am going to be going through the prosses of adding the class into the Fantasy grounds system myself as it is, I was going to offer to give you the .mod file so that you could upload it and let others who use fantasy grounds not have to do the work that I am doing.

I see. Thank you for taking the time to explain.

If you do decide to do this, I would be greatly appreciative. I'd very much like to make it publicly available if there are others interested in using the class over in Fantasy Grounds (which you would get full credit for). If there is anything you need at all, I'm happy to keep in contact.

I have completed it. I need only away to send a file to you. I will say there are some changes I made, based on my desired balance for my games. Such as increasing the lift of Updraft by 50lbs at 5th 11th and 17th and making it able to target objects, and for cantrips that have no damaging effect, having their durations increase by 1 round at each of the tiers of play. Oh and increasing the life regained by Widowmaker to half the damage done. I understand the want to keep the healing value of a cantrip low, but my interpretation is that these cantrips are Only available to the Harlequin and since the Harlequin has no "Spells" except for their discord uses which could be seen as moderately powerful if min-maxed, I felt that some of these Harlequin specific cantrips could use a little bit more oomph to make them enticing options.

Another was lingering Kiss, I put a Charisma save at the end of each of the targets turns to end early, (Dexterity to avoid initially, Force of self aka Charisma...See more

I sent it as a reply to your email, so it should just be connected to that. Otherwise, perhaps it is in your Spam...

It just had the .Mod File attached to it. and a list of all of the changes I will personally be using in my game which went as:

Well since you were so quick to implement the changes I offered, I should go through and specify all of the changes I made for my personal game so that the .mod and the PDF match, and I will make sure the .mod matches what your ultimately deside, then adjust my personal settings after you have the .mod.

Chaos Ladder, I offer the change adding this "The minimum duration increases by one at 5th becoming a minimum of 2 rounds, 11th (3 rounds), 17th (4 rounds)."

Epic Poem - "The duration increases by one round at 5th, 11th, and 17th level." (Deafened isn't a major inhibitor for combat, so secondary saves I think would under tune this but extended durations will allow Harlequins to more...See more

I had this Idea immediately after sending the other response, having gone through the other suggestions I have made to you.

Discord. This is the cornerstone ability for the Harlequin, at least as I am reading it. This is the thing that sets them apart from other spellcasters and makes them unique in the cast of potential heroes. Well, this and their Dance of Death.

There is something I think that could make Discord, just a bit more potent and that might have me personally keep the Hit Dice as D8 and even think about reducing it to d6 and it would be worded something like this.

Beginning at 2nd level, you learn how to draw upon the chaotic planes to alter the very nature of traditional magic. You have the ability to manipulate cantrips in a way no other can.

You have a number of Discord points equal to your proficiency bonus, and regain all expended uses upon completing a short or long rest.
In using one of your Discord points select one of...See more

I have no clue what it is that is preventing me from receiving your emails, but I cannot seem to locate them anywhere. At this point, I'm very confused.

I've made a number of the recommended changes as you suggested, a few more taking inspiration from your suggestions. I also corrected the necessary grammer issues that you spotted. You also brought up a good point of power scaling going up into high level play, and I've introduced a possible change. Once you reach 10th level, it will now be possible to select up to two secondary cantrips for each primary cantrip. So far from testing, this seems to have balanced out well with rival casters, especially given the short rest recovery on Discord points. For now then, I feel comfortable leaving it at 1d6 hit die (although I am more than happy for you to change this to suit your needs).

Once again, thank you so much for all the effort you've put into the .mod file and all the feedback you've offered. I hope this communication issue is solved...See more

Yea I will try simply sending you an email instead of a reply. but first I will have to update the .mod with the changes you have made.

I had one more thought, about Discord. in that, with it linked to Proficiency, players would get 6 charges by level 17 even if they have 15 levels in a class that isn't the Harlequin, I bring this up because it came to my attention in the twisted mess that is my thought process that no other class has this type of resource scaling. As an example, a druid's Wild shape, only gains the ability to have a swim speed or a fly speed when their Druid level hits certain points, monk only gets Ki from Monk levels, a Warlocks Pack magic, the closest thing to Discord and what I honestly would compare it to for balance purposes, as they get a max of 4 5th level spell slots that recharge on a short rest, and have a 1d8 for their HD, only gain more of these spell slots that are different from the 1-9 recharge on a long rest spell slots.

I was actually thinking myself...See more

oooo just thought of something, to balance back the disperse version, using it costs 2 uses of Discord.
Customer avatar
Lydia O February 21, 2019 7:58 pm UTC
Oh, it only allows two secondary cantrips - never three. I'm open to the idea of spending two Discord point to targeting additional targets though, which I'll start testing with. On the point of the reasource gain, you do make a valuable point. I'll look at possible alternatives, but for now it will stay as is.

David H February 22, 2019 3:56 am UTC
I know the name I meant to use for the 2 options of discord if you are to implement the ability to split a single cantrip to affect multiple targets. Convergence, for the form that already exists, and Divergence for taking 1 cantrip and having it target multiple targets.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
