The pressures of one’s birth negotiate a difficult harmony with one’s destiny. A new path might be directly ahead, but how is one to know?

-Maurita Rousse, Talarian diplomat and self-proclaimed mystic

Start your own duet campaign! Teleport your way out of the confines of a castle to an ancient mountainside cavern with a secret waiting just for you...

First Blush is the inaugural adventure of D&D Duet, bringing you high quality, ready to play material focused on supporting adventuring parties of 1 Player and 1 DM.

This adventure is written for a first-level character in a one-on-one 5th edition D&D campaign. It encourages collaborative storytelling between the DM and the player and takes the PC through low-stakes social and combat encounters, culminating in a high-stakes combat far from home.

You’ll find everything you need to jump-start your own two-person game.

This product includes:

  • 2-4 hour introductory adventure adaptable to any setting and spanning 2 parts
  • All necessary stat blocks for monsters and NPCs
  • A beautiful region map and 3 print and play battle maps
  • 3 ready to go player sheets complete with background information and personality traits

This adventure is perfect for a first-timer or an experienced player looking to explore the hobby in a fresh (sans traditional group) way. This would also make for a great session zero or breakout adventure for a player before the character joins a larger party.

The storyline continues with Second Glance, a level two duet adventure, also available on DMsGuild!

And, after that, the narrative arc finds a resolution in Third Time's the Charm, available for download here.

Additionally, we have a fun, Sune's Day celebration adventure for pairs and parties, Cupid's Sparrow. Explore a small town during their Sune's Day festival, have a few surprising or amusing social encounters, and get to the bottom of the strange behavior in the Lovers' Nook Inn.

Would this work for a mother/son DM/player combination? I don't want to ick him out with romantic stuff! And is there scope for bringing #2 son into the story, or is it strictly one-on-one?

Hi Ruth,
First, my apologies for taking so long to get back to you! Second, great question! This would absolutely work as a mother/son combination, and we've talked with a couple people who are playing that way and really enjoyed the adventure. This storyline isn't a romantic one, so no fear of icky-ness!

We do have a romantic backstory for one of the provided characters sheets, but he could create a different reason for why the amulet in the story is important to his character.

And yes, there's absolutely a scope for bringing in son #2! I think you could run two of the NPCs through the adventure, and that would be fine, especially if you wanted their characters to remain siblings. There's also a rogue NPC, Remmy, who is the main character's best friend. We've had a few people bring Remmy along with them, so if you wanted to use both of those characters, that would work well too.
There is a hero's quest element to the adventure with the amulet leading the PC to an ancient...See more

Is this duet a romantic adventure or would it be good to play with a friend too?

Hi Justin, I'm so glad you asked! It would be great to play with a friend!

The first few social encounters are with the PC's mentors and a friend, and their adventures beyond that could also stay totally platonic! The narrative arc isn't romantic or anything like that, and one-on-one play is really flexible, so you can adjust the NPCs' genders as desired to best fit your and your friend's preferences. We've talked with several people running through this campaign with their kids (as an example of some of the variety since most of the comments here are from couples), and I think it would definitely work well with a friend.

Please let us know if there's anything else we can help with as you get going, and we'd love to hear what you think after you play!

Hello, first off I would like to thank the authors for this little adventure. My (soon to be) wife will DM it for me this evening.

I have a little question about the provided pre-generated characters though. I've noticed for the cleric that some of the proficiency bonuses need fixing and that she starts with scale mail instead of chain mail (If I'm not mistaken clerics proficient in heavy armor can start with chain). The armor is just a tiny oversight (though I'll play her today with the medium armor and I think she'll try to get the funds to purchase a chain mail if she gets hurt to often :)), but it would be lovely to fix the proficiency bonuses, if you can change the files (I have no problem with them myself, it took 20 seconds to quickly go over them), since I can see many newer players and DMs trying this out and they could maybe get confused by some of those numbers.

Oh no! Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention! And also congratulations to both of you! How exciting!

I will absolutely go in and fix those numbers, and I really appreciate you letting us know! I had the same thought that you're bringing up with the scale mail instead of chain mail, though perhaps leaving a note on the character sheet would be helpful for everyone to stay aware of their options? My other thought was that she wasn't necessarily planning to go into an overtly dangerous situation, so I'm not sure she would have been wearing chain mail, but I will definitely figure out a way of balancing that for the various parties.

We really hope you both enjoy the adventure! Please let us know how it goes after you play! (And make sure you pick up Second Glance and Third Time's the Charm too as they carry on the adventure!)

We haven't finished it yet, but we both love it so far :-)

My fiancee was a bit worried about DMing, but the module made it easy for her - she only prepared a couple of dialogs, so she wouldn't have to improvise to much.

I already picked up the next adventures, thank you again for the amazing content.

Yay!!! That's awesome! You've absolutely made my day, thank you! Making it easier for new DMs was one of our primary goals for this adventure, so I'm thrilled that's working out! I tend to prep dialogues too when I'm DMing just in case!

Thank you so so much! And please let us know if there's anything we can do to help along the way! :)

Maybe I'm missing something, but I just purchased this title and there is no Appendix B. There is only one map, and that is of The Lonely Hold.

Hi Melissa,
First, I'm so sorry that happened! I'm wondering if you could check and see which of the files you're looking at as I think that may be the problem. There's First_Blush_Adventure_1.1, which has Appendix B starting at the bottom of page 10 and running through page 16, and First_Blush_PF_1.1, which is only 10 pages long and does not contain the other maps for Appendix B to save on ink and not catch DMs unawares with image-heavy pages they may or may not have wanted to print.

If that does not fix the issue, please let me know, and we will figure it out!
Thank you so much for buying our adventure!

So I have a question about the chasm. I don’t want to spoil anything for future players but I fail to see how a 1st level character would survive and make it to the other side of the chasm. My girlfriend and I played this and think it’s really fun but we’re curious how it is done since we spent 45 minutes trying to figure it out before I fudged the rules for her to not die to fall in.

First off, thank you for playing! We are so pleased you thought it was fun.

"First Blush" is a version of the first session my wife and I ever played. When we played it, she secured a rope to a piton and rappelled down the chasm. There are a few different ways I could see a DM handling the chasm. If I were running it, I would allow the PC to make an Investigation check to find something that could partially bridge the gap. Some starting gear comes with a grappling hook that could be used to get to the other side with a good Dex/Acrobatics check. A sufficiently strong character could push the marble desk to make a bridge or improve the angle of a long jump. However, at the end of the day, the idea with the chasm is to encourage the PC to engage in some creative problem solving.

Hi, I'm planning on running this for my wife as she wants to try d&d out.
I've never DM'ed before, but I was thinking that the Ice Mephit might be a bit hard for any lvl 1 character not "tough" in melee combat. Especially after potentially suffering from dmg from the trap above. Should I encourage her to roll a tanky class or am I too worried?

Hi! First, that's so exciting! Congratulations! We're super excited for you both!

I think that's a great question! So, first, as the DM, you could alter the stats of the mephit as needed to decrease its HP or the amount of damage it can do per round, or limit it to only slashing damage but no cold damage. You could also make the DC really low for the "Death Burst" saving throw if you needed her character to not take more damage. If you get really desperate, maybe she remembers that she has a healing potion in her pocket? How convenient! :)

On the larger scale, I would encourage her to try to find a class that she enjoys playing, and then you can add in a complementary traveling companion for her. Once she frees Garren, for example, anything attacking her rolls with disadvantage so long as he's within 5 feet of her, and most things she would be facing would target him as the larger, scarier opponent. Further down the line, too, you can add in magical items to help her character...See more

Want to ask a question about the adventure. What's the deal with the NPC Remmy? I'm not sure I understood what's his motives and how it affect the plotline. Is he there only for some interaction with the heroine?

Good question! A lot of it depends on what you want to do with the PC and their background as well as the player's experience.

Remmy is there, in part, to help work through the PC's backstory and their life in and attachment to their home in the Citadel. They've lived for quite some time in this one place that they're going to end up rather far from very suddenly, and that will leave them separated from not just mentors and family, but close friends too. So basically, Remmy is there to help answer what they are leaving behind when they misteleport in addition to helping the player practice insight and perception checks.
This leaves them with some longer-term questions too: Will they be trying to get back, or will they try to find a way for their best friend to get to come along with them later? Will they try to get in touch with Remmy, or one of their teachers, and let them know where they are, or will they suspect that someone is out to harm them and try to keep a lower profile until they...See more

cool, I think I may change Remmy a bit to be an NPC with a support role to the main character, and have him ready to join if the main character will approve. I'll change the other encounters to match 2 characters instead of 1.
Thanks

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
