Start your own duet campaign! Teleport your way out of the confines of a castle to an ancient mountainside cavern with a secret waiting just for you...

First Blush is the inaugural adventure of D&D Duet, bringing you high quality, ready to play material focused on supporting adventuring parties of 1 Player and 1 DM.

This adventure is written for a first-level character in a one-on-one 5th edition D&D campaign. It encourages collaborative storytelling between the DM and the player and takes the PC through low-stakes social and combat encounters, culminating in a high-stakes combat far from home.

You’ll find everything you need to jump-start your own two-person game! Our newest update includes two sidekick characters and stat blocks as well as DM's notes throughout to help with running a duet campaign.

This product includes:

  • 2-4 hour introductory adventure adaptable to any setting and spanning 2 parts
  • All necessary stat blocks for monsters and NPCs
  • DM's and player's battle maps
  • 3 ready to go character sheets complete with background information and personality traits
  • 2 sidekick characters
  • Advice and ideas for adapting the adventure to suit your gaming table

This adventure is perfect for a first-timer or an experienced player looking to explore the hobby in a fresh (sans traditional group) way. This would also make for a great session zero or breakout adventure for a player before the character joins a larger party.

The storyline continues with Second Glance, a level two duet adventure, also available on DMsGuild!

And, after that, the narrative arc finds a resolution in Third Time's the Charm, available for download here.

Pick up the entire trilogy, conveniently bundled in The Crystalline Curse Trilogy!

Additionally, we have a fun, Sune's Day celebration adventure for pairs and parties, Cupid's Sparrow. Explore a small town during their Sune's Day festival, have a few surprising or amusing social encounters, and get to the bottom of the strange behavior in the Lovers' Nook Inn.

My wife and I are attempting to run this campaign (she has literally no D&D experience and I have played once a long time ago) and we are really struggling with combat instructions and how to read the character sheet among other things. There's a lot of info on the character sheets and we just can't find how to interpret it all. Also, in combats, there's no instructions as far as damage, hp, initiative, or how any of that works. Should we learn all of this on our own? We were hoping the documents we purchased could tell us all of this. Are we missing something?

Hi, I might be able to help a bit if you have any questions, D&D can be more than a little confusing if you don't have any experience. First Blush and the other two parts of this campaign are mostly story guides. First Blush can be a good introduction to the game as the first adventure you two have together, however it assumes that you understand core mechanics of Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition already. It won't explain how to calculate the initiative stat or how class traits work or what an "Action" is. There is an official Player's Handbook by Wizards of the Coast that helps with everything from creating player characters, reading character sheets, initiating combat, and most of the other basic rules. There is also an official Dungeon Master's Guide that helps with running a campaign, playing and creating non-player characters, monsters, treasure, and more. But both of those books are long, daunting, and overwhelming to read (if you're like me at least). If you're going to try and learn on your...See more

Hi James,
These are great questions, and I would love to help! Mr. W below made some great suggestions, and I agree that delving into the Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide can be a lot to manage when just starting. On our site, dndduet.com, you'll find several guides for new players and new DMs that will help with the basics like initiative, calculating damage, and reading your character sheet. We also have a youtube channel where you'll find help with those things too. When I was first starting D&D, I found it helpful to watch other people play, like through a recorded livestream, just so I could get a feel for the game and the mechanics.

If I can recommend a few links for you, here's a guide for new players: https://dndduet.com/how-to-play-dnd/
And on that post, you'll also find tips and guides for new DMs.

My favorite resource for new DMs and players though is on D&D Beyond here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/essentials
It's really easy to navigate...See more

I ran this for my son (12) as our first solo adventure. We are both quite new to the game (I've listened to hundreds of hours worth, but only played half a dozen times and DM's twice).

I highly recommend this adventure if you or your player are new to the game and need a basic introduction to some of the roleplaying aspects and mechanics, or if you are a new DM (like me) it will help you draw out some roleplaying.

This took us just shy of 2 hours, and genuinely it was one of the best DnD sessions I've ever had. Simple, engaging, and a good cliffhanger! We will be buying and playing the rest over the newt weekend.

Thanks for writing it!

Hi!
I downloaded the complete archive of files and I'm not sure which version is the most up-to-date.

Thank y'all for creating these! My comrade and I have been wanting to do a one-on-one campaign!

One is longer, but the other looks more polished.

Hi Alex,
Sorry about that! The adventure has gone through several revisions, so the titles do get rather confusing. "First Blush adventure 3.0" is the most up to date! (I hope that's also the one that looks more polished!)

I hope you both have so much fun with the adventure! We would love to hear about it after you get to play!
All the best,
- Beth

On the Garren/the amulet: If Garren is forced to retreat to the amulet due to damage, does he get to treat periods in the amulet as rests (short/long)? Or does he immediately regenerate all of his HP, lose the effects of buffs/debuffs, regain spell slots, etc?

Hi Alex,
To some extent that's up to you as the DM, but my recommendation would be to keep the mechanic as simple as possible. Like we say in the adventure, if he goes in and immediately comes out, he would do so at 1hp with no other changes. Outside of that, yes, if he were in the amulet for an hour, I would count that as a short rest, and the same for 8 hours and a long rest.

The amulet mechanic functions as a guardrail of sorts (or like gutter guards), especially for new players and DMs. If combat gets really intense and Garren falls to 0hp, no one's rolling death saves, and the PC has a chance to escape or whatever they need to do. I wouldn't use it as a magical reset. Instead, if the PC and/or Garren really needed it, perhaps they suddenly find a healing potion tucked away somewhere? :)

I hope that helps,
- Beth

Hi! I just picked up the bundle, and look forward to digging into the series. I was wondering if there's a newer version though, as the bundle shows First Blush 2.0, but I saw someone below mention there's a 3.0?

Hi Anthony, sorry for the confusion there! We renamed the file version here on DMsGuild as 2.0 to avoid it getting mixed up with one of the older versions here on the site, but the filename itself is 3.0. They're the same file :)

Thanks so much for your question! I'll change the renaming here to avoid any future issues.
Best,

And now I'm looking at Second Glance. First Blush apparently ends in the Spine of the World (far NW). Second Glance starts in the Cloud Peaks? (Not SE of Faerun, as the text reads, but SW, and on the border of Amn.) It seems weird to fall down a mountain in the far North and end up at the base of one in the South. Maybe change that references to the Spine in First Blush?

Alex,
Thank you for your extensive engagement with our work. I’ll respond to all of your comments and questions here. The guards in the beginning having blunted spears is for flavor. Just run it with club and bow stats. You have the correct map. Feel free to adjust the boxed text to your liking. Feel free to use the map in whatever way works best for your table, whether that means only showing portions or cutting it up. The special magical darkness is unique to help create the cinematic effect of the flame igniting the runes in the Holding Room.

We are currently updating Second Glance to align with the adjustments we made to the most recent version of First Blush. The update will correct the discrepancy in location.

As with any DnD adventure, you should feel free to make any tweaks or adjustments you like to make it fit your tastes or the needs of your table. Thanks for checking out our work. We hope you have fun playing!

Is the darkness is the Holding Room some strange magical darkness? Normal darkness allows darkvision. Magical darkness (as the spell) doesn't allow torches. This room's darkness doesn't allow darkvision, but does allow torches?

"You pause as your senses adjust to the darkness of the
lower level. Ahead, you perceive two imposing
silhouettes from the fallen stone column. A long
hallway stretches beyond the rubble, leading to a door
carved to resemble a face."

The map I have has you entering on the same side of the rubble as the only hallway. If there's a door, it would appear to be at the beginning of the hallway, not the end. Did I get the wrong map somehow?

Also, the 'player's map' shows all of the rooms and levels in such a way that you cannot easily show them to the player without them seeing the whole structure. I guess you don't show them to the player until they've surveyed the whole place? Or you print it out and cut it up?

I have the 3.0 version of First Blush. I'm reading through the adventure, and it says the two guards the PC spars with in the beginning have blunted spears. But their stat blocks show a shortbow and a club? Also, where does the PC enter the arena on the map?

Hi Dean,
Great question, and I'm so excited to hear that you and your friend are looking at getting into one-on-one D&D! You don't need any books for this adventure (or any of the Crystalline Curse Trilogy), though you may need to reference the 5th edition SRD (5thsrd.org is my favorite site for this).
Please let me know if there's anything else we can do to help!

Hi, really like this module! My wife and I are about to start it tonight. We play with a larger group using Fantasy Grounds, and since we both like what it brings, I ported this adventure to a FG module. I'd like to send it your way to do as you please, if you want to include it in this package, but I haven't found a way to contact you directly. Let me know how I can do that if you're interested!
Regardless, thanks for publishing this, it's going to be fun!

Hi Beth, I have some broader questions about the Lonely Hold. What exactly was the original purpose of this installation? Was it built specifically as a prison for Garren, and by whom? The writings inside and outside the Hold are in elvish, which doesn't imply evil. Why would elves want to imprison a Paladin of Torm?
In the "Holding" description it says "the door slides to the side, revealing a short flight of stairs that lead down into utter darkness, the likes of which not even Darkvision can penetrate." So is this a magical darkness? If so, why would torch light work, but not darkvision?

Thanks for any insights!

Victor,

Thank you so much for checking out our adventure! We imagined the Lonely Hold as a place that has had many different uses over the ages. The circumstances of Garren's imprisonment are left intentionally vague in the Crystalline Curse Trilogy. We wanted to make something that DMs could build out in whatever direction they wanted to go. Additionally, we might revisit the Trilogy later to explore some of the larger lingering questions.

Perhaps the elves who left the script did not intend to imprison Garren, but to protect him in his altered state? It was later that his ancient enemies found him and desirous of preventing anyone from waking him up, left the wards/door/giant.

It is a magical darkness filling the Holding. Garren is very much associated with fire in our game, so we imagined the runes reacting to the fire from the torch and that reaction pushing out the magical darkness.

Thank you again for checking out our very first adventure and asking your...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
