First Blush is the inaugural adventure of D&D Duet, bringing you high quality, ready to play material focused on supporting adventuring parties of 1 Player and 1 DM.

This adventure is written for a first-level character in a one-on-one 5th edition D&D campaign. It encourages collaborative storytelling between the DM and the player and takes the PC through low-stakes social and combat encounters, culminating in a high-stakes combat far from home.

You’ll find everything you need to jump-start your own two-person game.

Hi Beth, I have some broader questions about the Lonely Hold. What exactly was the original purpose of this installation? Was it built specifically as a prison for Garren, and by whom? The writings inside and outside the Hold are in elvish, which doesn't imply evil. Why would elves want to imprison a Paladin of Torm?
In the "Holding" description it says "the door slides to the side, revealing a short flight of stairs that lead down into utter darkness, the likes of which not even Darkvision can penetrate." So is this a magical darkness? If so, why would torch light work, but not darkvision?

Thank you so much for checking out our adventure! We imagined the Lonely Hold as a place that has had many different uses over the ages. The circumstances of Garren's imprisonment are left intentionally vague in the Crystalline Curse Trilogy. We wanted to make something that DMs could build out in whatever direction they wanted to go. Additionally, we might revisit the Trilogy later to explore some of the larger lingering questions.

Perhaps the elves who left the script did not intend to imprison Garren, but to protect him in his altered state? It was later that his ancient enemies found him and desirous of preventing anyone from waking him up, left the wards/door/giant.

It is a magical darkness filling the Holding. Garren is very much associated with fire in our game, so we imagined the runes reacting to the fire from the torch and that reaction pushing out the magical darkness.

There doesn't seem to be a region map or any discussion of the area of Es'tra Duhn. The pdf only goes to 14 pages and I've seen it mention it once had 16 pages? Very excited to run this adventure but dont have any back lore. Please help!

The reference to Es'tra Duhn is a mistaken vestige of our first upload. We updated the setting to instead be in and around Amn in the Forgotten Realms setting. The adventure will start in that city before moving to the Cloud Peak mountain range to the northwest of Amn. We made the change for a few reasons, but one is that you can find all kinds of background info on Amn and the Cloud Peaks by poking around a little.

Additionally, it was 16 when we first published it. Since then it got a fancier, more efficient layout so it is 14 total pages in the adventure file. That 14 doesn't count the character sheets and supplementary material. Thanks for bringing that to our attention! It is addressed now.

Hi, I've read this through and have a few questions before running it if that's okay?

1) In 'Receiving' it says the Chasm is about 20ft across, but the squares on the map suggest it varies between 5ft and about 15ft. Which is correct?

2) If it's meant to be 20ft, how did you plan for the PC to cross it? Neither pregen has a pack with rope, and a character can only long jump as far as their strength score. I don't see anything else in the description that suggests a way of crossing, and obviously the falling damage from dropping down would kill a PC.

3) There's no DC for the Wisdom (Perception) check to reveal the existence of Area 2 - does that mean that any result will reveal it to the character?

4) Is the PC expected to fight the Ice Mephit? At CR 1/2, an Ice Mephit is a deadly encounter for a single level 1 PC.

5) Same as 3 above, no DC given for the Investigation check to get a sparkly rock in the Collapsed Hallway - did you intend for any roll...See more

Thank you for reading through the adventure and posting your questions. I'll address them in order.
1) The chasm is supposed to look daunting to the PC. The chasm is meant to be spannable with a good long jump. Ideally, the scenario would allow for some creative problem-solving on behalf of the PC. Perhaps they attempt to shove the desk over to shorten the distance? Maybe they use rope, clothes, or vines to cross?
2) We didn't go into the scenario with an "answer" already picked out. It really is up to the DM and player to work together to create a scenario in which the game can move forward.
3) Indeed. Since this is an introduction to D&D5E, we wanted to offer a few instances to set the rhythm of play and reinforce the idea that when the PC wants to see something, they roll Perception.
4) Combat in 1-1, especially at these low levels, might require a little DM-intervention if you do not want your game to suddenly and anti-climactically end. Keep track of your...See more

Yes, I think this would definitely work with a DM and two new players! We include a couple characters in the adventure, so you could use two of them. There's also a rogue friend, Remy, who you could tweak depending on the classes the players wanted and have those two leave the castle together, and then you would still have Garren, the DMPC/sidekick who they meet in the second half of the adventure!

I hope the other group members make it, but if they can't, I really hope you all enjoy the adventure! And please reach out if you need any help!

Good day,

First of all thanks for this great adventure. I have some post-adventure questions, that might help with a possible future update, if you're going to do one ofcourse :-).
To start, the 3 pregen character sheets; if I'm correct, the proficiency with all the characters are the same, although the scores don't add up.
Would it be possible to adapt them and put the proficiency dot's in the right place?
Secondly, another comment about the chasm; what if you don't have a grapple hook, nor rope, or strong enough to manage around the desk?
We tried it last night, but if the chasm would really be 60feet deep (instead of the mentioned 20ft high sealing, when you go to the second level) and I dropped ue to a bad athletics or acrobatics roll, 6xd10 damage would quite kill me instantly. So which part is true? the sealing that is 20 feet high, or the chasm that is 60 feet deep (when in area 1)?

Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention! We've fixed the character sheets and uploaded them, though it might take a little while for the corrected files to appear in the system.

Secondly, we're so happy that you enjoyed the adventure! For the chasm, we will definitely tweak that part in a future update, either including a grappling hook and rope there for the PC to use or an alternative with the stairs. The reason the drop is 60 feet and the ceiling on the lower level is 20 feet is that there's 40 feet of rock and flooring between the two levels, so the PC would be able to rappel down the first 40 feet and then have a free-hanging descent for the last 20.

Yes! Most of the adventure remains unchanged, but we updated the wording in a few places and changed the formatting. Since the printer friendly version doesn't have pictures, we kept it the same as the previous version.

So this is my first time running d&d and first time dm. Just running for a friend to see if we want to get more adventures. I have two questions.

1 I see the pre gen cleric, but can my friend make their own character. Or are some encounters reliant on that build and that character?

2. since it is my first time for d&d some of the rolls it says to make I am not clear on. I wasn't sure if I would need the handbook to understand this module, but things like insigh checks or different checks and a number. Is there somewhere in the module that gives a brief explanation or should I start looking for a copy of players handbook?

These are great questions, and thanks so much for picking up our module to get started with DMing! To answer your questions:

1. Your friend can absolutely make their own character! The only "necessary" thing from the pre-gen sheets is that the character has an amulet that's of significant personal value to them, as part of the adventure revolves around the amulet. Besides that, you're free to use any build you wish!

2. For the how to run D&D basics, there are two sites we recommend for people who are getting started that cover all the basics you need to know!

Here, they go over the different aspects of play and the core rules in an easy-to-navigate way. The different numbers and checks you're seeing are called ability checks, and it's how the dice help bring in elements of chance to the game. They'll cover all of that in this post.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
