Hatred Surfacing - a Zhentarim Faction Mission

It had been a good night. As good as one could hope for, when working the stage in a small tavern in Waterdeep's seedy Dock Ward. Star counted the gold and silver pieces in the full moon's dim light, as he made his across the dirty cobblestones. Distracted, he almost didn't notice the shadowy figure that had appeared at the other end of the dark alley. "I'm sorry, friend, my shift's over. No bonus acts," Star said with a disarming smile, his nervousness betrayed only by a slight tremble in his voice. Before the last word had crossed his lips, the dark stranger had covered the ten feet between them, and before he could raise a hand to defend himself, the scimitar found his slender neck. Bloodspattered gold and silver coins clattered to the ground, their soft clinking heard only by the strange elf standing over Star's headless corpse.

"Iblith," Soluun Xibrindas spat hatefully before disappearing back into the night, as silently as he had appeared.

'Hatred Surfacing' is the name of the first faction mission given to hopeful prospects by the Zhentarim in the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist campaign. In this elaborate version of the brief given in Chapter 2: Trollskull Alley, your adventurers will complete skill challenges to lay a trap for the murderous Soluun Xibrindas, before facing the drow gunslinger in combat. It's a dangerous mission given by one of the most interesting factions in the campaign, the Doom Raider Zhentarim, that should fill out up to several hours of gameplay, as your players learn the hard way what it takes to be part of the Zhentarim!

This document includes:

  • Additional flavour for the Zhentarim – more information about the Doom Raider Zhentarim and ideas that can help you make the Zhentarim more interesting as your players interact with them.
  • Hatred Surfacing - a full-fledged faction mission based on the first mission brief in Chapter 2, that involves two separate skill challenges and an encounter with the drow gunslinger Soluun Xibrindas.
  • A Night Dock Ward Encounter Map - a full 48x48 battle map primed for virtual tabletops, showing several streets in the Dock Ward during the night, usable for this faction mission and other encounters in Waterdeep's Dock Ward!
  • A DM's Cheatsheet – we've made the notes for you, distilling the 'Hatred Surfacing' faction mission down into notes that fits on a page together with the stats for Soluun Xibrindas.
  • A Sheet of Clues and Information – information about the Dock Ward murders and brief descriptions of 10 different taverns in the Dock Ward, easy to cut out and give to your players as they try to catch the murderer!
Note: Instead of buying just this product, you can save nearly 40% when you buy all four Zhentarim faction missions at the same time.

My party had a blast when i ran them through this tonight. Excellently done. I also have Deadly Delivery I'll run after they hit 3, however my question is, do you have any plans to publish any modules for the other factions?

Hi!

Really glad to hear you had fun, and thanks for the review! :)

Right now I'm working on finishing the Zhentarim, but I'm hoping to get around to other factions as well. If there's any faction in particular you're eyeing, I'll try and see what I can do (although I can make no promises!).

Thanks again for the kind words :)

There's some other resources out that touch on Lords Alliance, Order of the Gauntlet, and some of the others, but the one that seems to have the least love is Bregan D'aerthe because it requires having a drow in the party (though argument could be made that Jarlaxle could take interest in having operatives that are not drow since it would be even more covert), and Id love to see some more in depth stuff on them, especially since I dont find the book to be very clear on things like, I dont know if Jarlaxle (as JB Nevercott) would necessarily reveal that he's hiring them for Bregan D'aerthe for the first mission or two, or why would Jarlaxle EVER reveal himself to the party unless its a) necessary or b) at the very very end, what his reasoning is for the little quests they list in the book, or how Bregan D'aerthe would react to a party doing the first Zhentarim quest (Hatred Surfacing).

Paul Metzger has a great adventure up on here called "Scrying into his Hankerchief" that covers the first...See more

So hey,

Ive been picking up each of your WDDH modules damn near as they were released. Now you're offering the bundle that grants essentially 25% off of everything. There's only 2 WDDH modules I dont own, and while i'm cool having paid full price for the ones I already own, is there anyway to get that 25% off on the 2 that i dont? Feels as though im being punished for being an early adopter/long time supporter and that, just feelsbadman.

Hi Tigon

I can certainly understand that sentiment. I'd really wish there was some inbuilt function, where purchasers would automatically get a discount on the bundle. Shoot me an email at valeurrpg@gmail.com, and I'll see if we can work something out! :)

Thanks for your great support!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
