Curse of Strahd: Beneath the Stained Abbey

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Works best with 4 players at level 8 – but very adaptable to parties of varying strengths!

Beneath the Stained Abbey is a full adventure expansion built to tie in with the Curse of Strahd campaign setting. That said, it can easily be adapted to any urban setting or castle underdark. It adds a complete adventure which should take many hours and present a scalable challenge appropriate to any party.

Beneath the Stained Abbey is a fantastic two-shot (ish?) exploration and dungeon-crawl-based mission quest that demands the players' attention as they explore the hundreds of feet of cliffside below the Abbey of Saint Markovia.

Are you running Curse of Strahd but want some more depth and connection with the Krezk community and some Curse of Strahd lore as a whole?

• Grotesque settings of depraved inanity!

• Subterranean settings to set your heart achill!

• Flesh Golem monstrosities in the form of the Seven Deadly Sins!

• Backstory about Barovia and tying the Abbot in to world events!

• Lush and disturbing illustrations for your players!

A full adventure sure to take several hours of gameplay time, Beneath the Stained Abbey presents many unique monsters and combat situtations. Great opportunities for roleplaying!

Howls rend the air, cascading out over Krezk. But they are only the outward signs of trouble at St. Markovia’s Abbey. If we only knew that beneath the Abbey, behind an imposing cliff face, lay chambers long abandoned to horrors. And through these caves and sewers flows a steady stream of filth directly down and into the secluded town –filth purified and rendered at the last minute “safe.” That is, until a certain party of travelers arrives and unknowingly set in motion events which may ultimately doom every fearful inhabitant of the frosty mountain town.

Page 4, number 7: The water is clean again at the source, but the blessing on the Sparkling Pool remains.

Um.. what? The water is contaminated at the source??

No dimensions given for VTT, and the scale makes it difficult to match with the separate files. Ended up cutting the maps out in photoshop and sizing up for use on a VTT

A little disappointed that this one wasn't on sale for the Halloween sale. I was waiting for it to go on sale, because it seems a bit pricey for 37 pages.

You might want to review the maps from the Abbey down to level 2, and then level 2 to level 3.
Upon playthru it was very confusing as there was one tiny shaft (with broken ladder) down to 3rd, unless the players went down with the refuse. A long fall from abbey to 2nd could mean a further 60' fall down to 3rd and into water. The location of the shaft is right over the water(not the ledge) on level 3, so I had to quickly dummy up a small platform, and the players had to quickly swim to the ledge (and discovered Sloth...fun roleplaying scene there). Nothing major, but remember players in Barovia always look for the exit.

That actually sounds like it might have been intention, trying to force the players to use a rope and a sling?

Love the adventure! Any chance you could include the artwork for the enemies from in the book? I like the art style and I want to make enemy tokens out of the art but some are covered with their stat blocks.

MapTool or any random online PDF ripping tool should be able to do that for you. Avoid downloading random tools from websites you don't trust. RPtools and MapTool is definitely trustworthy. ;)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
