{OAP} The Accursed Class

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Outlandish Adventure Productions presents:

The Accursed, a halfcaster class that has taken control of the curse that ailed it! At some point in their past, each accursed was afflicted with a permanent curse designed to make them endlessly suffer. Not content with accepting their fate, the accursed found a way to bring the curse under their control, utilizing its magic while mitigating the worst of its effects. They can use their Jinx feature to imbue other creatures with a small amount of curse energy with a touch, and use their Curse Control to Suppress their curse’s ailments or Afflict other creatures with them temporarily.

Accurseds are defined by their Accursed Affliction, the curse that they made their own, and by their choice of curse ability, the ability score – Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma – that they used to bring their curse to heel. Each affliction has its own method of approaching exploration and combat and its own list of curse spells tied to the magic of that curse, as well as lingering ailments that add some complication to its bearer's every day life!

Accursed Afflictions

Curse of Lycanthropy – You were afflicted with the curse that turns civilized humanoids into ravenous beasts. Upon conquering it, however, you realized that its true nature is the ability to transform into mammalian shapes, which you use to enhance your senses and gain a natural weapon.

Curse of Misfortune – You were afflicted with extreme chronic unluck, but have since realized that the magic simply alters probability. You use this newfound ability to cheat fate, and turn the tide of luck in your favor.

Curse of Possession – You were afflicted with possession by a spirit that refuses to pass on. After regaining control of your body, you made a deal with the spirit to share your flesh, working together to accomplish both of your goals.

Curse of the Armament – You were afflicted with attunement to a cursed weapon. You’ve learned to make use of the weapon’s unique properties, using its attachment to you to your advantage.

Curse of Vampirism – You were afflicted with being turned into a vampire. You’ve since restored yourself to a form of life that isn’t exactly undeath, and can still feel the vampiric power and thirst within you.

The Accursed Class also comes with 16 completely original spells usable by accurseds and a number of other classes, but especially Warlock!

We hope you love being cursed as much as we and our players do! We’d love to hear your feedback, so please send us any questions or comments you have. Also, if you perceive any balance issues, please let us know and we will address them as quickly as we can.

Update History

10/30/2019 v1.1 - Curse Control's Afflict ability was altered to allow the afflicted target to repeat the save, potentially allowing it to escpae the ability's effects.

1/4/2019 v1.0 – Original Accursed Class uploaded.

Do we have any idea of when the solo release of the remastered Accursed class will happen? Really want to play a Lycanthrope character with the updated class.

The next big thing coming out is the the Sculptor: Masterpiece Edition (formerly the Sculptor Remaster), which is in layout right now, and I also just posted a poll to my Patreon sponsors today about what major project they'd like me to work on next, which could be the standalone Accursed remaster or one of a few other projects.

In the meantime, if you have UAH, the remastered version of the class in that is fully backwards compatible with all previous subclasses, whether they received a remaster in UAH or not.

Hi Ross, first of all great job on including this class in The Ultimate Advenurer's Handbook! Absolutely love the things I've seen so far, really original concept!<br /><br />
I do have some questions though regarding the Accursed as presented in that book:<br /><br />
First question: What was the design philosophy for not including concentration on jinx? The target may be aware the accursed is the source of this curse, but unless they're a powerful spellcaster there isn't much to do about it other than running +90 ft away from the source.<br /><br />
Second question: I was looking into the curse of immortality. I noticed the genius concept that the accursed can not be healed by magic cast by others. However, using the affect ailment action a player can pretty much ignore all drawbacks of the curse for the entire duration of most combat situations for the cost of just a single spell slot. What is the design philosophy here? Personally I'd limit the duration...See more

Hi, Arne!

Concentration wasn't included in the Remastered (aka UAH) version of Jinx because it requires repeated use of your action to maintain the Jinx on subsequent turns if it wasn't procced in the previous round, which is even more restrictive of a requirement that it allowed me to make the Jinx effect itself more powerful while also taking a burden off the class's reliance on Concentration spells.

As for Curse of Immortality's interaction with others' healing spells, the Accursed is a halfcaster, which makes spell slots something of a precious commodity, and the ailments in and of themselves are direct, static drawbacks, which is something other classes don't generally have to deal with. When you use the Suppress effect, you're essentially using a limited resource that could otherwise be used to cast your spells or Afflict your ailment on others just to remove your drawbacks for a limited time, which is just the baseline of having no direct drawbacks that your other party members...See more

Aside from subclasses, how different is this version of the Accursed from the one in the Ultimate Adventurer's Handbook?

The UAH version is "Remastered" making use of three additional years of class and player option design I'd accrued between this class's release and UAH, and I consider it to be the definitive version. The base class is largely different, but I did make sure that it was backwards compatible with all of the subclasses that have yet to be remastered. If you already gave UAH, then I'd recommend only buying this class if you want the Lycanthropy, Possession, and Vampirism subclasses, all of which will have remasters in the eventual individual solo release of the Remastered Accursed (which will also have oodles of original and extra content).

Hey Ross, purchased the Ultimate Adventurer's Handbook to get your class, plus the others. I was wondering what would happen, if the curse of armament would devour a sentient weapon, would the curse gain that sentience?

Hi, Scott!

Thank you so much for picking up UAH! And yes, your curse weapon gains *all* of a consumed weapon's magical properties, including any Sentience property that magical weapon has. Whether the original weapon's personality transfers to your curse weapon or your curse weapon gains its own personality when this happens, that's up to you and your DM.

one of my players have broken dnd with this class buy going down the bane Malediction tree (Deadly Bane specifically) as she has also has taken eldritch blast and agonizing blast trough feats so whenever she hits it deals a minimum of 11 damage and with Illusionist's Bracers she can do it 8 times at high level with a minimum of 88 a max of 160 and a average of 124 a round and with each increas to her ability score modiferer increasing the damage by of these numbers by 16, so in short good class but don't allow for this as she is out damaging artifacts. (also with Infuse Negativity cast before entering combat and Explosive Bane you can deal an additional 11-60-110(11d10) damage)

Oof, yeah, feats plus powerful magic items can break pretty much any character, especially at higher levels. Fun part is that powerful PCs give you the opportunity to throw some seriously powerful enemies at them, which I personally find quite fun as a DM!

One of my friends brought this class to the table and is currently playing with the Curse of the Armament.

I must say I read it and came all the way here to commend you for this one. Is such a good roleplaying class for tragic heroes and pretty unique at it.

I do find the current spell options to be very limiting and short, but that's not a big of a deal. Furthermore, I think the Armament specialy greatly falls behind in early game for a not so strong late game. I feel as maybe Fighting Style at level 3 would be better.

But really, I'm really considering buying more of your content and checking out some more of your creations. This document has a lot of funny ideas and awesome implementations on both roleplaying and new fight and combo (with the party) dynamics.

I love this class! One of my players is currently getting ready to play the Curse of misfortune. A question about the various 'infuse X' spells; most of them say that the spells can be ended with a wisdom check, which is different from a wisdom saving throw. Is this intentional? It's fine if it is, we were just surprised.

Hi, Thony! I'm so glad you're enjoying the class and so incredibly excited that one of your players is using it as part of an upcoming character!

When I originally published this class in 2019, it was intentional that the Infuse spells could only be escaped with ability checks (and not saves) because I always enjoy playing around with unexplored mechanical space when I'm designing. It works, and it's overall well balanced, though bizarrely makes those spells slightly weaker against enemy bards.

However, one of the things I'm working on behind the scenes right now is a series of class remasters, in which I'm updating and reworking all of my past classes to apply all of the design lessons of learned over the years and bring them up to my modern standards, as well as add an enormous amount of new content (including new subclasses, spells, magic items themed around the classes, and even NPC stat blocks). As part of that, I plan to change all of the Infuse spells to have the more traditional...See more

Hello there Mr. Leisler I am happy to say I greatly enjoyed this new class; however, I do have one complaint specifically about the Curse of Misfortune's balance. If I pick up the Swift Jinx ability that allows me to "cast" Jinx as a bonus action, what is to prevent me from doing something as simple as picking up the Magic Initiate feat and taking Eldritch Blast. Effectively I get to cast two cantrips a turn for a low cost of a feat or playing a Variant Human. I must compliment the design of the lycanthrope while I am here though. It incentivizes a more MAD style of play with every single ASI probably going to a an ASI rather than a feat. Constant healing for one minute, and most of the spell slots you have are going to be used for hex or other non-saving throw types of spells means that a high WIS is not required but still good to have. I feels like a lot but it really just means you probably won't be able to max Str Wis and Con like you can with a fighter or barbarian, but rather have a good mix of...See more

Hi, Brian!

There is nothing currently preventing you from doing that combination with Magic Initiate feat, though I will address it in the Remaster. That said, since not every table allows feats and feats vary wildly in power level with some being incredibly abusable (Magic Initiate, Great Weapon Master, Sharpshooter, Lucky, etc.), it is considered best practice in the design community not to consider feats when it comes to balancing a non-feat option.

Thank you for your kind words about Lycanthropy! In the Hybrid Form feature, I determined through playtesting that the healing alone wasn't powerful enough for a limited-use feature, but was very close, so I decided to add a mechanic that illustrated the ferocity of bringing the inner beast that close to the surface. So, instead of just giving the bonus action attack when you take the Attack action, I made it so you got the bonus action attack while in hybrid form no matter what action you took.

are you planning to create a second outlandish afflictions for this class around halloween? if not I understand but if so I have a few ideas for at least the styles of the subclasses.

The first idea i had was a curse of the mummy subclass that involved egyptian style spells a like insect plague and dust devil with abilities that involve the use of bandages and sand, I have doubt about it because even though mummies are known for causing curses and are classic horror monsters like vampires and werewolves they aren't known as creatures that are created from curses, kan-ra from killer instinct is a exception but find material about people being cursed into becoming mummies is far and few between.

The second subclass idea I had was cannibal styled subclass based around being cursed with starvation, but then I found a native american monster called the wendigo that fit perfectly with the style so the curse of starvation changed into the curse of the wendigo.

This subclass would be a strength based tank with self sustain and there own version of a barbarian rage, the wendigo rage would grants them the abilities to gain temporary health from the damage they deal as if they are devouring the chunks of flesh they ripped from the victims body.

sorry for spoiling but I would play or watch a playthrough of the game "until dawn" if you want to see how terrifying a wendigo can be.

Hi, Cull!

Unfortunately, I've come to realize that it actually costs me more money to make subclass supplements than I ever make back from them, so while I love to make them, it's just not a smart investment. So, any future subclasses created for my classes will be as a result of new content I write for class "remasters" where I polish up the mechanics of my older classes using my updated design sensibilities and the new mechanics "technology" that's been created, as a part of collaborative materials, or possibly as exclusives for my Patreon once that gets enough support to justify creating purely exclusive content for it.

That said, a mummy subclass is a great concept that I almost included in Outlandish Afflictions, and it's definitely on my radar! The cool part is that in D&D, mummies can afflict creatures with "mummy rot", which is actually defined as a curse that wastes away at the victims' flesh until they die and can easily be reflavored to cause...See more

This isn't the best of what you're looking for, but here's a link to their first episode and entire playlist.
It's by Team Four Star, a company that got super popular on YouTube by making anime abridges, such as Dragon Ball Z Abridged or Hellsing: Ultimate Abridged.
I haven't watched much, but as best as i remember, there was one NPC who was an elementalist, and then one NPC who recently got changed from a Fighter to an Accursed.
They've also used some of Benjamin of Sterling Vermin's work, such as the Spiritualist and the Beastfolk, along with other dmsguild created classes.

Ok, so most of these aren't super set in stone yet, they're still in idea phase. So, in no particular order:
Curse of The Fey: The same curse that turned the Fomorians into their ugly forms with their Evil Eye ability.
Curse of Disease: I really liked the idea of someone having like, all diseases at once, essentially making them immune to getting them again and they could easily spread them, but they're so sick that it's like similar to exhaustion.
Curse of Desire/Love/Yearning: Think of like when Cupid strikes you with his arrow, but this affection can spread to other things too; like objects, places, or even just ideas.
Curse of Constructs: Beauty and the Beast curse. You turn into some sort of inanimate object, all set with an item you hold onto that represents the curse.
Curse of The Punishment/ The Hatred: Similar to the Sculptor from SEKIRO, this curse slowly turns you into a devil/demon, but your able to keep yourself composed for the most part.

Those are some awesome ideas, and one of them even lines up surprisingly well with Curse of Plague concept we've been kicking around, though ours is more about contracting various magical diseases (rather than a tone at once) yuo choose and basically turning yourself into a controlled biological weapon.

Some other concepts we've been working on behind the scenes are Curse of Immortality, Curse of Invisibility, Curse of Slumber, and Curse of Petrification, though I can't quite go into details on those yet ;P

Looking over the class again and trying to make a character work with it, I've realised that the class is rather horrifically MAD. Lycanthropy for example locks the player out of Dex usage in its features, but due to a lack of Heavy armor, they need at least 14 there in order to be getting the most of their armor.

Say I wanted to make a Lycan Accursed, at level 1 I'm expected to have 16 Str for my attacks, 14 Dex for my armor, 14 Con as I'm going to be in the frontline as a martial class (and one that needs to make Concentration saves), and then a 14 or 16 in my Curse Ability Modifier. The lack of Heavy armor and forced Strength usage makes it a truly difficult option. I would suggest giving the whole class or the Str-based subclasses (Lycanthropy and Armament) access to heavy armor (but not shields) to alleviate this. As it stands the class design ends up a lot like Strength-based Rangers, except even they can tote around a shield and constant access to better weapons to boot.

Hello again, Andrew!

You are correct: certain archetypes were made intentionally MAD, because they would be absolutely broken otherwise. Lycanthropy, for example, gets two attacks at early levels, which allows it to make incredibly good use of Hex, allowing for absolutely enormous damage numbers, and it also has some rather overlooked tanking ability at level 3 due to the healing from Hybrid Shift. In the case of Armament, you can afford to have a lower AC because you're attacking from the midlines, not the front, most of the time, meaning that you most likely won't be getting targeted quite so much as the tank in the enemy's face.

That said, we did know this could be a problem for certain builds, and added in a workaround in the Protective Hex Malediction Metamorphosis, which lets you calculate your AC using your curse ability instead of Dex. It doesn't help at level 1, no, but level 1 is a fragile level for every class in the game that isn't Barbarian.

I have, personally,...See more

I guess it'll come to proper play rather than theory, but 15 AC on a frontliner (that isn't a Barbarian with half damage from conventional forms and 20+% more HP) is pretty uncomfortable for me.

My other thought is that the replacement for Fighting Style you've put in place is a great idea, but at the same time feels like Eldritch Invocations or Mercer's Blood Hunter. Now, that's a good thing, as it does the opposite of my previous issue with MADness: it gives choice. However, the bonuses are too far apart, I feel, for it to give the feel of improving as you go along rather than being "sudden power spikes". I think getting a fourth upgrade to it would help, but this of course would mean re-examining the later features. Could take half-progression of Invocations as a basis (the class very much akin to Warlock, though a half-caster). It may ne a little trouble to do, but I feel it'd have an excellent effect on character progression and helping the class feel more expansive.

Thank you very much for your feedback. It will definitely be difficult to include a fourth tier of Malediction Metamorphoses from a balance perspective without losing some of the class's core flavor, but we'll definitely look into it when we do other revisions.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
