Tales from Undermountain: The Plagued Apprentice

This is a 15+ hour Forgotten Realms Adventure set in Undermountain for Characters of 10th level, directly tying into Dungeon of the Mad Mage.

She ran. Where to or for how long, she really couldn't say. The little flame of her oil lamp sputtered and went out a few times. She'd snap her fingers and make the wick flare to life, but she may as well have ran blind. The hallways were pitch black with soot and choked with smoke, every turn was a guess and every corridor a gamble. Unnatural screams echoed from every direction. Left, right, left again, was this the south or north end of the labyrinth? She had no idea.

The next turn brought her face to face with a doorway completely consumed in blue fire. The room beyond was so bright she had to look through her fingers at it. A shadow covered her, a shape in the doorway: a hulking creature with a wolf-shaped muzzle and enormous pincers for hands, wreathed in the same blue flames. The screams were getting closer behind her, too. They had her cornered, again. The demon slammed its shoulders through the narrow opening, splintering the wood and stone. She dropped the lantern and let the wand in her sleeve fall into her waiting hand. With a word of power and a gesture, she appeared in the familiar bedroom: stuffy and reeking of wood smoke.

She'd have to try again tomorrow, if she could remember.

10-15+ hours of Play: This adventure combines a labyrinthian sandbox, a handful of potential allies -or- potential enemies, and strange magical traps, hazards, and roving bands of grotesque creatures. In playtesting, this adventure could easily have stretched beyond the ten-hour mark if the PCs were left to explore every inch of the chambers presented in this hall.

Set in Undermountain: With the release of the incredibly huge Dungeon of the Mad Mage by Wizards of the Coast, many alternate avenues for new adventures were introduced in each of the levels. This adventure makes use of the established cannon surrounding Undermountain and the Mad Mage himself to spin a brand new story to inject into your explorations.

Forgotten Realms or Homebrew Material: Though I took heavily from the Forgotten Realms lore, this adventure is packed with useful NPCs, magic items, bonus chapters that can be added to any dungeon, and brand new creatures to strike fear into the hearts of your powerful adventuring party.

Expansive: This adventure was written for 10-15 hours of play, with plenty of room for roleplay and important PC decisions. Spanning over 40 pages, this adventure could fuel a great deal of play time at your table.

Magic Focus: This entire adventure revolves around a wizard, her familiars, and magic gone wrong. A supporting cast of NPCs and interesting magical tests and traps help drive a story that revolves around one of the most destructive forces known in the Forgotten Realms lore: The Spellplague.

Art Packed: With art from several different prominent members in the D&D community as well as some free commercial use images, there is no shortage of inspirational art inside.

Dyson Logos Map: Thanks to his wonderful Patrons, I got a chance to re-purpose a beautiful Dyson Logos map for many areas of this sprawling adventure.

Only the one that's included with the numbers - but I tried to keep any relevant information off of the map.

Also, any chance of a printer friendly version?

There are currently no plans for a printer friendly version, though do you do have my honest and sincere sympathy. In a poll of 1481 votes only 88 thought a printer friendly version would be useful.
IF you are dead set on on printing the entire adventure and require a printer friendly version - shoot me an e-mail ( and i'll see if i can manage it for you. Do keep in mind you can print black and white and everything /should/ grayscale correctly if you're looking to save money at a print shop!

I noticed that on the cover page of the adventure it says it's designed for characters of 10th level, but then a couple places in it says it's supposed to be supplanted into level 6 of Undermountain. Level 6 is The Lost Level and it's designed for characters of 9th level according to DotMM. Would you recommend running it attached to The Lost level when the APL is 9 or wait until Slitherswamp or Dweomercore when the APL is 10?

Level 10 was chosen because the adventure fits more into the second tier of play than it does the first tier of play. There should be very little to no difference between running the adventure at level 9 and level 10 except in extreme circumstances. Ideally, the adventure would take place when the characters are in the 6th level of Undermountain and hit level 10. DMs running the game with a milestone XP system should probably run this adventure just before the party is ready to vacate the 6th level of Undermountain and move on to the 7th.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
