ADAPTABLE_NPCs.png

Dungeon Masters, immerse players in your world by bringing the non-player characters to life!

Contained within this supplement are 70 NPCs with unique statblocks (created by the team behind the best-selling Grimlore's Grimoire). Each NPC contains custom art, lore, and a stat block balanced for the 5e Challenge Rating system.

Additionally, 8 short adventures have been included. These adventures have been created for Dungeon Masters to introduce their players to some of the Adaptable NPCs with minimal preparation. Each adventure has high-resolution printable battle maps created by Justin Andrew Mason (DM & Player versions are included), an adventure background, a recommend party level, and room descriptions with encounters (both combat and roleplaying) utilizing NPCs from this supplement and the 5e monster manual. Note: The maps have been included as an additional download in a seperate .zip file.

Reviews

"If you're a DM, you need to have this in your bag of tricks. Not only are the NPCs solidly presented mechanically, they're presented with ideas on how to use them in your ongoing campaign. The mini-dungeons at the end even give you instantly-usable scenarios. So when your table throws you a curveball, you can still present them with a fully-realized encounter or series of encounters which will be satisfying." - R.P. Davis

"Adaptable NPCs is a fantastic resource to help DMs in a pinch. Don't be surprised if some of these NPCs become the foundations for the most memorable characters in your Dungeons & Dragons campaign!" - Christian Hoffer (comicbook.com)

"Adaptable NPCs is a true hidden gem. From Dukes, Dragoons and Drunkards, to Scholars, Scoundrels and Seers, this supplement provides a much needed expansion for Dungeon Masters looking to pull out quick NPCs on the fly. Buy it and bring it to your table. You won't regret it." - Vall does DnD

"Even if you don’t need more NPC tools, the artwork alone is amazing. Combine that with the fact that you get 8 short adventures, complete with maps and tokens for all 70 NPCs, and you’re getting a lot."Tommy Williams (geektyrant.com)

Love it so far. Needs another proofread, though. The party I am DMing for is already level 12, so I am going to use one of the higher level adventures, and I noticed that Area 14 of Restless Crypt (p86 on the PDF) appears to be missing. An interesting red smear behind that secret door... Ghouls and Ghasts will be joining the combat from sections 13, but there is no reference to 14 - it jumps straight to 15.
I think I am going to add a trap. Maybe a poisonous odor in the back of 5G, giving the party a clue that maybe there is a secret door there. And if the open the door, a poison save or some small bit of damage. Add the grisly remains of the king's last adventuring party - perhaps a lost relative of the Vicar or Sun Knight. Or make it *most* of the old adventuring party, with one or two still awaiting sacrifice to feed souls to the Lich's Phylactory.
You know what.... nevermind. It's more fun to add my own stuff. Leave 14 blank.

I purchased the Bundle and was able to print out NPC's 2 and Npcs of the guild no problem. However this PDF is not printing correctly leaves large blocks of black over images and doesn't print the cream background. Any suggestions?

Hi Matt,

Included as a second download is a .zip file with all of the maps (player & DM) that you can use in virtual tabletops.

If you use the Fantasy Grounds VTT, we have converted the product for that platform already: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/263392/Adaptable-NPCs-Fantasy-Grounds?affiliate_rem=1549348

This is a fabulous bundle, but I'm wondering if there's a version where I can copy off of the NPC statblock? I can do it in Adaptable NPCs II and Calamity, but can only copy the regular page text and nothing in the box from ANPCI.

It would make life a bit easier for use in Roll20 if there was a resource available.
Thanks!

Hi Daniel,
Unfortunately, ANPCs was made with a different method than ANPCs II / Calamity, so this is not possible. For all our future projects, we will make sure you can copy/paste from the statblocks, but I apologize it not being possible for ANPCs I.
Cheers,
Trevor

Hi - some downloads have a 'printer friendly' version. Does this title? I looked at the PDF, there are stellar images, but would like to print out some of the material so I could write on a page, and not use up a bunch of ink or not have the cream/ivory background. Thanks.

If you bought the PDF version, the zip folder contains all of the maps - both DM and player versions.

Also, I will share that this module has been converted into Fantasy Grounds already, and if you own the PDF version, I've bundled them so you can get it at a discount.

Hi Tim,

Unfortunately there was a small issue with the previous version. All files have been fixed, re-uploaded and passed initial inspection. Assuming no other issues, it should be available Late-May / Early June.

Also, I'm working with the DMsGuild to give everyone a discount code to purchase a print copy if they own the PDF version.

Thanks but it’s fine. I’ve really enjoyed reading it and the adventure maps and ideas are excellent. I switched up my upcoming session from a map I had to the crypt map in the book. Since I have the pdf, can use it on my tv on the game table for map display in fantasy grounds. One of the best products I’ve bought on here. Thanks again!

I really enjoy the supplement, and I think the NPCs offered are fresh, unique, interesting while filling in some missing gaps with the NPCs offered in the official books and other DMG supplements. I appreciate the amount of high quality art, I really prefer supplements that are full of rich and inspiring illustrations. Trevor, I did read your response to Eric Watson's review of ANPCs and I also watched his video review of the product.

I was editing my comment into a very comprehensive response and it got cut off because of the DMG's timer function. Trevor, I will cut to the chase: I love the product, and it is hands-down one of the best NPC compendiums available on either the DMG or Drive-thru-RPG.

My point about the art: I saw Eric W's video review long after I had purchased ANPCs, and while I strongly disagreed with his complaint about the proportion of art to text (if anything, I would have preferred more art, not less), I did agree with his comment about how the female NPCs were depicted in an overly-sexualized manner that felt incongruous with how the male or non-gender specific NPCs were depicted. Nearly every female NPC is shown in scanty clothing with heaving cleavage. In contrast, the male NPCs are fully-clothed and look like tough warriors, capable clerics, powerful wizards, etc. Perhaps, if there had not been such a disparity between the male and female NPCs, the impression would not have been so jarring. Certainly,...See more

Hi Christopher,

Thank you for your comments and high praise of Adaptable NPCs. It really means a lot! Regarding some of the art, I agree completely with Eric's review. However, sometimes as small community content creators, we must work within the confines of what is available for our meager production costs. I would love to have a substantial art budget for my products, but it is just not realistic for community content released on the DMsGuild.

I was very fortunate to work with the artists who contributed to ANPCs, allowing me to make a product without the typical stock art commonly used on the DMsGuild. ANPCs has ~80 unique pieces of art in it, and while some might not appeal to everyone, I hope everyone can find something they like. For me personally, the Priest of Death is my favorite piece in the book - i wish the majority of females in fiction pieces were portrayed in that manner!

For ANPCs II, Currently 81 NPCs are in development (this will get trimmed to 70 like...See more

Hi Clive,

Thanks for your kind words! I cannot wait either!! The samples have been ordered are being delivered as we speak. If they look good, I can give OBS the go ahead and Adaptable NPC's will be made available for print. I'm hoping well before the end of April.

Regarding price, I'm not sure what the cost is yet. There should be soft and hard cover options available and I'm working with the DMsGuild to have discount codes emailed out to people who already bought the PDF version, so they can get the discount that new purchasers (PDF & Print) will get.

As always, everything is tentative until it goes live, but I hope this helps!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
