The Forgotten Forge: An Expansion and 5e Conversion Guide

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Forgotten Forge is the classic adventure most often recommended as an introduction to Eberron. An adventure intended for 1st level character, The Forgotten Forge is set in Sharn and is included in the original Eberron Campaign Setting for 3rd Edition. It is available for free download on this site. This document is an update that will allow you to use it with 5th edition rules. In addition, notes have been added to provide additional context, encounters, and adventure hooks so that the DM can introduce some of their favorite aspects of the Eberron setting. Due to these notes, this guide is several pages longer than the adventure it is based upon.

Please note that the original adventure is required to use this conversion.

Content:

This product includes the following and more:

  • Conversion notes, making all encounters compatible with 5th edition rules.
  • Notes on adapting the adventure for a larger - or higher level party than originally intended
  • Background information on the different encounter locations, providing an excellent introduction to various parts of Sharn
  • Stat blocks for all NPCs in the text of the adventure, including Lady Elaydren of House Cannith
  • Stat blocks for monsters, including two versions of the Iron Defender
  • Two warforged components, including the Final Messenger
  • Bonus encounters that can introduce the PCs to new allies or enemies in Sharn
  • Suggestions on how to continue the storyline that begins in the adventure
  • Both a 16-page full-color PDF and a printer-friendly version

Now updated to version 2.0—This version includes improved compatibility with Eberron: Rising from the Last War, some minor balance changes to encounters, improved continuity, a new layout and design, and a new cover.

Conversions for Shadows of the Last WarWhispers of the Vampire's Blade, and Grasp of the Emerald Claw are now available!

Actually, there is a SECOND follow-up to The Forgotten Forge.

The Queen with Burning Eyes, by James Wyatt, published in Dungeon Magazine #113.

It is included in the back of the original 3.5 book for the Eberron Campaign Setting.

Just finished this converted adventure module. It was also our first serious 5e adventure. So a learning curve for them and me. Both for the 20+ yrs roleplayers and the newbies to roleplay.
I really enjoyed the additions. Especially the encounter in the tailorshop which showed the party (5 players, 1 wizard and 4 fighter-based classes) that some fights can go wrong really fast if they aren't careful. And it showed the variety of roles races have and that alignment is not fixed in Eberron.
It was worth every penny and I can't wait to start Shadows of the Last War next month. Great work Stuart!
Hope you will continue on the Grasp of the Emerald Claw and maybe Whispers of the Vampire's Blade, even with its issues.

I would definitely buy any conversion as I’m kicking off my Eberron campaign this weekend with this Forgotten Forge conversion. None of the players have ever played in Eberron.

Do you have plans to follow this up with conversions for the other 3.5 adventures in the series, such as Shadows of the Last War?

I'm working on another project at the moment, but I'd like to do Shadows of the Last War and Grasp of the Emerald Claw after that. I think I'd probably skip over Whispers of the Vampire's Blade, as it doesn't really tie in to the other two well and has a host of issues.

Any update as to when you plan to start/finish those conversions? And do you have any recommendations as to how I could convert Whispers myself if you don’t plan to convert it?

I've started them. I have been wrapped up in projects that pay the rent, but hope to get back on them shortly. Whispers: I'm not going to just ignore it. I'll be putting in some suggestions on how to handle it. I might even do a basic stat conversion if you want to use it as written... I just think it has narrative/railroad problems and doesn't tie in well to the ongoing story.

I'm really looking forward to a conversion on these as well as I'm converting them a little at a time as I DM them for my 5e Eberron campaign.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
