DMM: Skullport Encounters

Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage provides the bare bones of the town of Skullport but doesn’t flesh out any interesting combat encounters. Your players will likely feel the combat “itch” as they explore this subterranean venue. Here are three varied, challenging encounters so they can scratch it.

Xanathar Brawl – a medium encounter at the Black Tankard

Dinner to Die for – a hard encounter at the Worm’s Gullet

Drow Ambush – a deadly encounter on Skullport’s lower level

These encounters were built for a party of five level 8 characters but are scalable for most any tier 2 (levels 5 – 10) party. Scaling advice is provided for each encounter.

Each encounter includes a detailed description, complete stat blocks for all enemy combatants, and a map that’s easy to sketch out on-the-fly. A separate pdf document is provided for each map. Maps are scaled such that one square equals 5 feet.

The encounter descriptions and stat blocks are formatted for your home printer and to minimize paper waste. Stat blocks have been grouped logically by encounter.

Each encounter description gives suggested combat strategies for the enemies, often highlighting abilities that synergize well. Suggested explanations for enemy motivations are also provided.

This document was built as a supplement to Dungeon of the Mad Mage. However, the encounters are adaptable enough for use with most any tier 2 party.

I believe Droon's statblock should include resistance to poison damage, as that is a thing all dwarves/duergar get.

You’re right - all dwarves/duergar should have that. I’ll check the document.

One more small issue I found: The Strategy section of "Dinner to Die For" mentions a deathlock wight, but that monster is not mentioned anywhere else. I very much like this supplement BTW.

Thank you for the compliment! I'm glad you like it. : )

I added poison resistance to Droon's stat block and changed "Deathlock Wight" to "Deathlock Mastermind" as it should have originally read. I appreciate your feedback!

Thank you for your comment and compliment! It is my intent to provide interesting encounters for your enjoyment and the enjoyment of your players. I hope you try running the first encounter and see if you and your players have fun - all you need is included in the preview.

My scaling decision (building the encounters for five 8th level players) was based partly on dmsguild convention (tier 2 encounters are typically scaled for 8th level) and partly on the typical table number and level of players I've DMed for at my local FLGS for the last several years. The players at my table tend to be more experienced and appreciate varied, challenging encounters. I received strong positive player feedback after running these encounters - especially Dinner to Die for.

In any case, the actual difference between the fighting power of a level 7 and a level 8 party is usually small. Between these two levels, spellcasters still only have access 4th level spell slots, and the most common...See more

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
