Waterdeep 5e Fantasy Grounds Module: All things Waterdeep in one module

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Waterdeep Fantasy Grounds module is the most comprehensive module on Waterdeep for Fantasy Grounds Classic and Unity. The module adapts and updates information about Waterdeep (NPCs, Locations, and Organizations) from AD&D, 3.5E, and 4E books into one module for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. The module organizes and connects the information from all of these materials to save Dungeon Masters preparation time and increase flexibility during a game. The module has lots of new descriptions for buildings, high-quality battle maps of generic and specific Waterdeep locations, and a recreation of the Noble Family's crests. The module is useful for Dungeons and Dragons 5E, Waterdeep Dragon Heist, or Waterdeep Dungeon of the Mad Mage games. If you want to immerse your players in the history and unique characters, locations, and organizations this module is for you.

The Waterdeep Fantasy Grounds Module includes the following:

  • Unity and Classic support
  • 15 Maps of Waterdeep (based on Elven Tower's Waterdeep Map) used to categorize locations with pins on the map including one map for your campaign.
  • Support for the Waterdeep Dragon Heist Fantasy Ground Module adding 429 location pins to the Waterdeep DM and Waterdeep Player maps
  • 429 Locations with pins in the 15 maps separated by ward and type (city buildings, festhalls, inns, noble villas, residences, shops, taverns, temples, and wizard towers)
  • Pins for 11 fences and 6 fence contacts on their own map of Waterdeep
  • 43 Guilds with guild leaders and notable guild members
  • 75 Noble Families with information on the patriarchs, consorts, heirs, holdings, income, and trade interests of the family.
  • 315 NPCs including, noble family members, fences, shop, tavern, and inn owners all with stats converted to 5e or generated from scratch
  • 75 Color Noble Family Crests
  • 10 Custom 100 dpi battle maps of generic locations in Waterdeep using Forgotten Adventures map assets
  • 1 Battle map of Noble villas
  • 3 Fantasy Ground Decals
Also includes my Waterdeep Primer as reference materials.

Updated for Fantasy Ground Unity

Includes a Fantasy Grounds Unity version of the module with full support for Fantasy Grounds Unity functionality and includes updates to all maps to support:

I figured it out. Somehow Finder moved aliases into the Modules folder instead of "original" files. I tossed everything in the trash and plucked the real files out into the Modules file and all is well. Really digging the pile of work that went into this module. Thank you.

OK. I'm totally new to FGU. Honestly only downloaded it to get this module because it looks like you've already done what I've been trying to do for months...
So the trouble is, FGU does not offer this module in the "Modules" activation screen. How do I get FG to "see" the downloaded module? I'm on MacOS if that matters.

FYI, getting a new error in FGU that causes this module not to load properly:
[ERROR] Process Data File (Waterdeep): The '' character, hexadecimal value 0x93, cannot be included in a name. Line 17389, position 15.

Dustin,

I just loaded the module in FGU without any error. I also checked out the line number in db.xml for both the Unity and classic versions, and I don't see a quote character, which is what 0x93 is associated with in HTML. I would try downloading the files again, I know that character issues have occurred in the older version of the module.

Hello, I am reading above that you have 315 npcs with location. I dont use virtual tabletop. Would it be possible to get a spreadsheet with their name, location, and stats ?
Thank you so much

I will look into this idea. I would need to create a program to do it. I haven't seen anything that easily exports NPCs from Fantasy Grounds to a PDF. I would release this as a separate product because I think that would be something cheaper than the full automation that the fantasy grounds module provides.

Hi Jason,

we stopped the campaign before the holidays and we will resume it soon. everything was working before the holidays, with the last update, I am no longer able to have the Pins on the Dragon heist maps. I try to redo the C method and it does not seem to work. what can I do?

Patrick,

I would start by testing Option A with a new campaign to see if the pins appear in that module. If that works then the problem is probably with the instructions or where you put the XML. If you can get on Discord and join the server there I can help diagnose the problem and possibly provide a fix. I am assuming that you have a fair bit of information for your campaign in the dragon heist file already and that it isn't possible or easy to recreate that information if you started with the Waterdeep module dragon heist file. If it is a small amount of data and the first step worked I would consider that too.

That is a lot of work. I completely understand not wanting to lose any of that work. If you can get on Discord and send me a copy of your dragon heist xml file I can test it and see what if anything needs fixing in the waterdeep module and what changes might be needed in the dragon heist file.

I can't get the xml to work using FGU. I already have the db folder and the xml. But if I copy everything and If I do this it does not show the pins:
OTE: If the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist.xml file contains a or tag, you should copy only the XML below the or tags in the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist_NEW.xml XML to below the or tags in the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist.xml file.

Marco to apply the pins to Waterdeep Dragon's heist if you have already made changes takes some editing of the XML. I can help diagnose the problem better via Discord and if you can send me your campaign folder I could make the changes for you.

My recommendation is to first try setting the module up with a completely new campaign and make sure that you see the pins in the Dragon Heist maps there. Once you have done that I recommend copying the campaign you want to use the pins in and apply the XML to that Dragon Heist XML file. Once you have it working there you can apply the changes to the campaign you need them in.

The last option is to determine what changes you made to Dragon Heist that created the db folder and Dragon Heist XML file. If the changes are few then you may want to copy the current XML file and replace it with the one from the Waterdeep module. Then reapply you changes within FGU.

Wow! What a remarkable product. I am in love with all the little tidbits to be learned, and can't wait to use some of them for my increasingly realistic city. I thought about buying some of the books that were used to create this extraordinarily comprehensive list of locations, people and building information, and am thrilled by how comprehensive this is. It will be neat to describe what's happening on every area! (For me, if not the players)

I do have a question, though... in the Maps section, there are no pins on any of the Ward maps labeled CAMPAIGN. I was saddened by this because I purchased this product because I started manually putting pins in and realized someone had already done it, and done it better that I ever would have. However there's no pins on the campaign maps. I have pins on all the other maps, though, so I'm confused. Did I do something wrong when installing? (I had to merge the XML files, which was new to me but I think I did it right.) Please let me know as those pins...See more

You didn't do anything wrong. I added the campaign maps to allow DMs to have a version of the map they could put their own pins in. I tried to make it so the module could work for someone who wants to add pins to maps with the pins in them or to a separate map. My thought was that you could share the campaign map with the players, or allow them to add their own pins and notes to them.

If you are not running dragon heist you don’t need to set up that xml. The xml is just to add the pins to the dragon heist maps.

I would add the pins if you want to use those maps even if you are not running the module. Discord does work for conversations.

The discord channel is in the getting started notes for the modules. The pins are on the modules maps. There is one set of maps called campaign that has no pins. Those maps are intended to let you add pins to your own version of the map.

When I load the module in fantasygrounds unity 4 says:

do you know what would be the issue?

I don't without further diagnosis. I looked at the db.xml at the exact location the error mentions and I am not seeing 0x93 as a character, I guess that is a 12. If you can stop by discord we can diagnose this further. Otherwise I would try redownloading the file from DMS guild. What version of fantasy grounds are you using?

Hmm yes the mod files are just renamed zips, so are ext. There shouldn't be any issues with the db.xml file. I don't have odd characters in the db.xml that is part of the zip file I uploaded with everything in it.

I downloaded the file again from DMS guild and I don't have off characters on like 17670 i have . Either we are talking about a different file, or I would recommend downloading the files again from DMS guild because it sounds like you have an older version of the files.

Hit me up on the discord channel. I can see what I can do to help. My guess would be that the Fantasy grounds xml doesn't have an xsd defined. It will depend on which Fantasy grounds you are using.

My guess is that the XML still doesn't have a xsd definition in it and that is probably causing the validation error. I would attempt validating the xml create by FGU without the Waterdeep changes to it. If the same error occurs then it is likely an FGU or XML Copy Editor validation concern. If it doesn't have the same issue then it is a Waterdeep xml issue. I know that the community did discover an issue with copying the classic xml into an existing unity xml file for the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist.xml file. The pins don't show up. I have released an update that has a unity version of the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist.xml file that should alleviate this problem.

One of the Castle Ward, City of the Dead, Dock Ward, Sea Ward, Southern Ward and Trades Ward street scenes is always randomly empty... is that intentional or a bug? It's not the same one every time, it's different every time I open the table. Is the table randomly generated each time? Is that why it takes a few seconds to open?

This does not happen with the North Ward street scenes

In FGU at least, some of the tables are broken/empty. Special Pick Pocket Items has nothing in it. Valuable Pick Pocket Items has only 2 things in it and no range on the dice rolls, so it always rolls Small sack of 50 gp. Common Pickpocket items starts with 3 items with no die ranges, then a bunch of empty spots, then starts at 1-5 with Dagger near the end of the list.

Hi, I'm not following this instruction under option C: "Copy the text inside the <root> tag of the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist_NEW.xml file into the root tag of the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist.xml file in the moduledb folder.
NOTE: Make sure that if an <encounter> tag already exists or an <image> tag exists in the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist.xml file in your moduledb directory that you are placing the XML from DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist_NEW.xml that is in the same tags in those tags in the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist.xml file in the moduledb folder."

Is "the text inside the <root> tag" merely the text contained within the two < >? I.e., in my NEW file it reads "<root version="3.3" release="8|CoreRPG:4" integrity="8dc37237ae07bb492faa05084db9abfc516742b7">" ?

XML uses an opening and closing tag. It might help if I said the text between the opening <root> tag and the closing </root> tag. A text editor like atom from the github folks might help here. It reads xml and will show matching open and close xml tags. In the <root> tag you provided take the text in the file after the > symbol until the text in the file before the </root> tag that is at the end of the file. If this doesn’t help hop into the discord channel and I will try to help you work through it.

Should be resolved now. I keep forgetting that Windows ability to drag a file into an existing zip file causes the zip file to become corrupt.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
