The Waterdeep Fantasy Grounds module is the most comprehensive module on Waterdeep for Fantasy Grounds. The module adapts and updates information about Waterdeep (NPCs, Locations and Organizations) from AD&D, 3.5E, and 4E books into one module for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. The module organizes and connects the information from all of these materials to save Dungeon Masters preparation time and increase flexibility during a game. The module has lots of new descriptions for buildings, high quality battle maps of generic and specifc Waterdeep locations, and a recreation of the Noble Family's crests. The module is useful for Dungeons and Dragons 5E, Waterdeep Dragon Heist, or Waterdeep Dungeon of the Mad Mage games. If you want to immerse your players in the history and unique characters, locations and organizations this module is for you.

The Waterdeep Fantasy Grounds Module includes the following:

  • 15 Maps of Waterdeep (based on Elven Tower's Waterdeep Map) used to categorize locations with pins on the map including one map for your campaign.
  • Support for the Waterdeep Dragon Heist Fantasy Ground Module adding 429 location pins to the Waterdeep DM and Waterdeep Player maps
  • 429 Locations with pins in the 15 maps separated by ward and type (city buildings, festhalls, inns, noble villas, residences, shops, taverns, temples and wizard towers)
  • Pins for 11 fences and 6 fence contacts on their own map of Waterdeep
  • 43 Guilds with guild leader and notable guild members
  • 75 Noble Families with information on the patriarchs, consorts, heirs, holdings, income and trade interests of the family.
  • 315 NPCs including, noble family members, fences, shop, tavern and inn owners all with stats converted to 5e or generated from scratch
  • 75 Color Noble Family Crests
  • 10 Custom 100 dpi battle maps of generic locations in Waterdeep using Forgotten Adventures map assets
  • 1 Battle map of Noble villas
  • 3 Fantasy Ground Decals
Also includes my Waterdeep Primer as reference materials.

This looks really interesting! I'm definitely interested, though I run on Roll20. Would I be able to still implement this, if perhaps not the pinning feature?

Asha, Not that I know of. I could release the maps as a separate product if you think that would be helpful, but the benefit of this is that it is a module built for Fantasy Grounds. My understanding of the license for DMs Guild is that Fantasy Grounds is the only product you can make modules for with WoTC licensed materials. For Roll20 I would need to release something different that hopefully you could import into Roll20. I haven't used Roll20 before so I am not sure what that would be, but if you think it might be useful I can look into it.

Jason - Love the product (well done). My campaign of 5 years started to languish months ago because the party had made its way to Waterdeep, and I got a little overwhelmed by all the work I'd need to do to build a Fantasy Grounds module of all things Waterdeep (to my satisfaction) - and your module has done the trick, and we're (soon) back in action!

Problem: While I did get the pins to load just fine for Dragon Heist, and everything seems to work, there is one issue - the players maps. The pins are all offset/off target by quite a bit on the players maps. I'm assuming it's because the X/Y coordinates the XML file uses are from the DM's maps, but the players maps seems to be larger (ie show a couple inches more map area) than the DM maps. Presumably that's why they're off. Am I wrong there, or is that what's going on? If that's the issue, hopefully you're cooking up xml for the players maps?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Thanks for the compliment, I am glad it is helping out. You are correct about the inaccuracy of the player map pins. I added them by copying what was in the DMs map pins for x/y coordinates and just put them on the player's maps. I had assumed they were the same size, and same starting points. I will start updating the pins to the correct locations today. If I can't find an exact coordinate difference between the two maps that I can add to each pin on the player maps it might take a couple days to update by hand.

Torgarrd,

I have taken a look into this. The Nw, NE and E player maps are the same as the Dms maps and the pins are accurate. The SW, W and SE player's maps are completely different from the DMs maps. So much so that the SE players map is missing a section of Waterdeep from soothsayer's way to the honorable knight statue. No other players map has that section. I have submitted a request for Fantasy Grounds to fix this in the Waterdeep Dragon's Heist module (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?47569-Waterdeep-Dragon-s-Heist-Player-s-Maps-missing-sections-of-Waterdeep&p=422954#post422954). I have modified the pins in the W and SW players maps, but I stopped working on the SE when I realized a whole section of Waterdeep was missing and a very important section since it includes the Yawning Portal. The whole story starts there. I can post the updated XML for the W and SW maps, but I feel like modifying the SE map would be a waste because people are probably not going to use it in...See more

Ya, I'd kinda wondered if the SE players map in FG's Dragon Heist wasn't a mistake (which was the one I kinda keyed in on), since the larger area it shows doesn't contain anything of worth. Basically it's just more farmland on the eastern edge of the map. Lets wait and see what SmiteWorks has to say on that one. Otherwise that's gotta be alotta work. Hopefully we can git'r one way or the other, as the South Ward's got alot goin' on, and I'm not thrilled about using the DM's map with my players (ie with "Kolat Towers" and "Helm's Hall" etc stamped on them).

Thanks Jason!

Hi,
Having some experience w/ xml, I managed to get everything in the right place in the xml file, and pins are working for the most part. There are a few pins that still ask me to load DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist@Waterdeep. After checking, I found a something that might be the cause:
This one works:
<shortcut>
<x>561</x>
<y>1964</y>
<class>encounter</class>
<recordname>encounter.enc_seaward_thepilgrim_srest@Waterdeep</recordname>
</shortcut>
This one doesn't work:
<shortcut>
<x>1130</x>
<y>1815</y>
<class>encounter</class>
<recordname>encounter.enc_06_03cassalantervilla@DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist@Waterdeep</recordname>
</shortcut>
Is this addition correct? Is there something I'm missing? Thanks! - Eric

The second one <recordname>encounter.enc_06_03cassalantervilla@DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist@Waterdeep</recordname> should be <recordname>encounter.enc_06_03cassalantervilla@DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist</recordname> The @Waterdeep is causing the problem and I will update the xml file with the fix tomorrow.

Anything that has @DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist@Waterdeep should only say @DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist. That is a mistake of a quick and dirty replace i did on the </recordname> in order to link the pins correctly to the Waterdeep module. The @ tells Fantasy grounds which module to look for the record in. @DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist@Waterdeep is telling Fantasy grounds to look for the record in the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist@Waterdeep module, which doesn't exist.

I've tried to follow the directions to get the pins to work on Dragon Heist Maps several times and I can't get them to work. I tried starting a new campaign and it still won't work for me.

Charles, Can you join the discord group? If so I think that would be easiest to walk through what is happening. I also can make a video of what I do to make it work. I tried it last night with the xml and it worked for me locally. I am happy to work with you and figure out if the instructions are missing steps.

Charles, If your issue was that you were able to view the pins on the Waterdeep-E-DM map but when you clicked a pin it created a new blank story page I have fixed this problem. I had uploaded a version of the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist.xml file that I had not modified to point the pins to the Waterdeep module. The new version, which should be available to you will open the pins correctly. I will also make a video and post it today that walks through my steps to get the pins to work.

https://discord.gg/eP7RaZe is the link to the discord chat. It is also in the contact information story page for the Waterdeep Getting Started story category. I have uploaded a new version of the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist.xml file and added all of the pins to the players maps too.

Yes, it is specific to the 5e ruleset in Fantasy Grounds. THe pins and story pages could probably work in other rulesets, but I don't think the NPCs would.

One other possibility is you have pins disabled in the maps. To check open the Waterdeep-E-DM map. Right-click, select layers and there should be a circular button with a pin icon. The pin icon should have a cancel circle (circle with a line through it). If it does then pins are enabled for the map, if it doesn't then pins are disabled and you should click that button.

Charles, I worked with Tigon to figure out why the pins were not showing up for him tonight. We discovered that the underscores in the DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist.xml are causing the problem. Fantasy Grounds does not seem to find the file and associate it with the Waterdeep Dragon Heist module if there are underscores. I am going to upload a zip file of all of the projects files to DMS guild moving forward instead of four separate files. This will allow me to control the filenames more. Try renaming the file to DD Waterdeep Dragon Heist.xml instead of DD_Waterdeep_Dragon_Heist.xml.

Dear Jason, this product sounds very useful to me, since I am running my main campaign since the year 2000 in Waterdeep (and some side or independent games too). Could you please write down the list of publications that are included more exactly? This would be helpful. If you plan to add more publications in the future this would be another nice info (e.g. Waterdeep FR 1, Volos Guide To Waterdeep, Waterdeep City System, Waterdeep 3.5) Thank you for your wonderful work.

I certainly can. They are all documented in the credits page of the module under the Waterdeep Getting Started category. I will add them to the product page as well though. Let me know if I need to get more specific about titles, or if there is information you think needs to be added. I plan to continue to make updates to the module to improve it. I want this module to save anyone running Waterdeep in Fantasy Grounds time and effort. I am also adding a release notes page in the next release to help DMs know what changes I have made with each update.

Thank you for the list. I am overjoyed to see the wonderful old stuff integrated (Cloak & Dagger f.e. is one of the best Waterdeep suplements). I will buy your product for sure and will be happy about future additions.
What about adding infos from the "City System Box"?

Is the city system the maps of Waterdeep and other areas? The battle maps for the family villas are coming from that, I just have to wait for a few more assets from forgotten adventures (circular stairs and portcullis) before I can really dig into these battle maps. Or are you looking for the city encounters? I was realizing I should add encounters to this, I don't use random encounters as a DM I make them up for the story so I am less experienced with what is useful for a random encounter. I can work on adding encounters though.

Hi, its this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_System But you are Right. The box only has the maps and a small book consisting mainly of encounters and other tables. Probably the pickpocket-tables seem pretty useful to me. The normal encounter tables are only "nice to have". I like them cause they are mostly non-Combat but help describe a Living surrounding

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
