Residents of Trollskull Alley

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Fantasy Grounds version available here.

"Residents of Trollskull Alley fleshes out many of the NPCs who act as neighbors to the party. Not only does Residents provide extra adventure hooks and ways to befriend the many NPCs of Trollskull Alley, it also provides hooks for other D&D adventures like Storm King's Thunder or Curse of Strahd." - Christian Hoffer, ComicBook.com

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist introduces us to Trollskull Alley, home to Trollskull Manor in the heart of the North Ward of the City of Waterdeep.  Waterdeep is a rich and vibrant city.  Volothamp’s Enchiridion gives us some nice color on the city and the book introduces a few of the residents of the alley.  This supplement adds detail and depth to each of those non-player characters and introduces dozens more.  It also provides maps for several buildings in Trollskull Alley, adventure hooks and encounters ranging from fun and frivolous to challenging and difficult for adventurers far above and beyond 5th level.

If Trollskull Manor is your home base, come inside and meet the neighbors.  They are a colorful lot.  Our goal in creating this supplement was to make the area around Trollskull feels vibrant and alive.  Not just home to a handful of businesses and their proprietors, but truly a living breathing home for your party.

Features:

  • Details on the residents and businesses for 35 buildings in Trollskull Alley.
  • 70+ adventure/interaction hooks.  Including:
    • small tasks that can help raise funds
    • ideas for financing the renovations to Trollskull Manor
    • early hooks to the villians or their minions
    • hooks to Undermoutain
    • hooks for both Curse of Strahd and Storm King's Thunder as follow up adventures
  • Full color VTT ready maps for Trollskull Manor, the alley itself, and interiors of several buildings.
  • Notes on how to make the Fireball really hit home by introducing the innocent victims early in the game.
  • Printer friendly version of the PDF.
  • A section on Training as a downtime activity with new mechanics.
  • A section on making Skill Checks more interesting as an element of the game.

Version 7 Update:

  • added orginal artwork by Tamara Thrift
  • updated to two column layout throughout
  • refined and added several adventure hooks
  • added one new resident and his business
  • minor edits throughout

Enjoy!

Hi Hal,
First of all, amazing product! Love it so much.
My question goes to you as well as other purchasers: What would/did you guys put in the empty buildings? I can't for the life of me figure out what would make sense for the campaign/the world in general. Just curious as to what others have done or what you, Hal, would have put there yourself?

Hi Hal,
First of all, I LOVE this. Really bring TSA to life!
I'm trying to print the TAS maps using PosteRazor. Can you please tell me what's The size in inches of each side?
I'm planning to create a great big playable version.
Thanks so much!

I'm trying to print Trollskull Alley's maps. What's the best way so I'll get an 1*1 inch grid?

That depends on your printer and software. In general printing them full bleed (no margins) on 8.5"x11" paper in landscape mode produces the right result. Each floor is the two pages that you can tape together.

5 Stars, love this product, so useful. Printed out all the maps on sticky paper and made awesome battle maps, any chance you have the other buildings as 1x1 battle maps. Trying to build all of Troll Skull Alley as one big battle map. I would definitely purchase E5-E21(Thanks for E19) as well. Love to see your take on the West side (Theatre, city watch)
Again amazing product a must have, if anyone is even thinking of playing Dragon Heist.

Great product, but it would be very helpful to have a one page summary of all of the npcs (age, species, gender, location, summary) for use at the table.

The maps you provide don't match the floor plan of Trollskull Manor in the book. Is this intentional? It means that these maps will unfortunately not be useable in our game.

Definitely intentional. The maps in the book have many architectural inconsistencies (fireplaces with no foundation below, stairs that would be ladders based on the rise and run presented, etc.). The maps provided here maintain the exterior footprint of the building while fixing these errors.

Forgive what may be a stupid question - I'm having some trouble printing the maps at the correct size in poster format. My print dialogue box says it's printing at 100%, but when it actually prints, it's not to 1" scale. What am I doing wrong?

They are all sized for 70 pixels per inch. The only thing I can think of is that your printer is trying to introduce a margin or do shrink to fit. The Trollskull Manor maps are all sized for full bleed on an 11×17 sheet. The others vary in size.

Wow. In all of the purchases I have made on dmsguild, this has to be one of the most useful one. I am launching Chapter 2 of Dragon Heist and this gave me a whole lot to work with and bring Trollskull Alley to life. I've been DMing for over 20 years, making my own stuff but this has incredible value and is an incredible time saver that adds a lot of potential fun to the game. At 4.99$, NO DM should overlook this.
Thank you for the hard work!

I'm having a bit of trouble placing the stairs in the bottom right corner of E4. It appears that the door that opens to the stairwell doesn't match up correctly to something.
The basement lines up to the 5foot by 5foot stairs on the ground floor. This seems to indicate that the stairs in the bottom right corner go up to the second floor. This would indicate that the stairs behind the door would go up to the third floor but if you do that you end up walking into a wall. Am I missing something?

Great catch. Updated maps have been uploaded. For E4, the upper end of each staircase is in the corner and the lower end is 15' off the corner.

Unfortunately, it still isn't right. Now both the 3rd floor and the cellar exit to the same point on the ground floor.

Drawings for all floors including the cellar were updated. If you are using the current drawings for all levels, the cellar for E4 connects to the ground floor in the southeast corner of the building. The stairs to the second level, connect ten feet north of the cellar doorway. The back stairs are all stacked such that the upper end of the staircase is in the southeast corner and the lower end is 10-15ft north of that.

Great work on the maps! Is there a stand alone for the renovated but unfurnished groundfloor of TS Manor? I see it as a part of the full east map but it was not in the zip as a stand alone with the other unfurnished Trollskull Manor files.
Thanks!

No plans to do them all. Though I do have a few more detailed ground floor maps, if that is of interest. I'm finding that most of the activity that would require a map is happening the street or on the rooftops.

If that's the case though, could you at least provide a roof view of Trollskull. We've got mostly, but with the Attic exposed. Would like one with it entirely closed off that matches the rest of your maps. Perhaps with a rundown option as well.

I know a new release is coming soon, do you think we can get the interior maps for the East & West buildings without the numbering on them? Would like to use directly on VTT but the circle with E### is a little distracting to some of my younger players. Thanks and keep this coming, it's great!

Noting that W4, W8, W11, and W17-21 have no entries. I'm assuming that you left these empty for DMs to add their own things into, however you never note this in the document and may want to consider adding a sentence to this effect.

OH! I see, V6 coming in the next 5 days. I'll be using W18 for a business that a couple of characters from a previous campaign opened.

You've done great work on this, looking forward to the interior layouts for the rest of the buildings

WAY beyond enjoying! This is exceptional. Great NPC additions and Adventure hook tie ins to flesh out the alley, a ~critical~ area in Waterdeep for this adventure. I'm going back through and collating all of my 1st, 2nd and 3rd edition Waterdeep content into my OneNote but nothing was detailed in the Trollskull area so with all the other work i have to do, this was a GOD SEND helping me keep players busy while I tackle the insane task of all the rest of Ed Greenwood's locations throughout the city.

For my campaign I actually commissioned a couple of pieces of artwork for Mistofer Carlowe aka Madame Zanzinni. While I do not have the license to allow you to include these into your module, I would love to share them with you for your personal use if you'd like to see them!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
