DotMM Companion 4: The Twisted Caverns

"See, this is the part of the story where I experimented with religion. Namely, creating one. Alas, somewhere between worship and ritual sacrifice, my disciples got it wrong. I said, 'love thy labors,' not 'thy neighbor.' And they welcomed that new neighbor with open arms—right up until it shattered their minds and made them slaves." – the Mad Mage on being a god

Welcome to another installment of the Dungeon of the Mad Mage Companion. Our beloved gameshow contestants have reached the Twisted Caverns—a mad arcade dominated by, as our adventurers will learn, the "Lover in the Dark."

This supplement fleshes out the level, greatly expanding on the primary villain, the aboleth Illuun. In this regard, it's been written as a tyrant that has grown obsessed with its own flawed concept of love. It equates tyranny, obedience, and worship all to love—and hungers to harness this power to overthrow the gods one day.

You'll also find in this supplement:

  • DM Notes. Quick notes for the DM so as to not flip through the chapter.
  • The Lover in the Dark. An expansion on Illuun's personality, replete with haunting messages to whisper to the adventurers.
  • Halaster's Game. As a variant, the kuo-toa do not worship a petrified otyugh but the Mad Mage himself, a fact that amuses Halaster. He has promised salvation to his followers if the archpriest can perform a ritual in the Grotto of Madness—Illuun's new lair.
  • Areas of Note. Notes, scenes, and scripts for various areas of the dungeon.
  • Magic Item Descriptions. Save yourself the time of digging through the Dungeon Master's Guide to determine how the few magic items on this floor work. The appendix also lists the area the item is found.
  • Monster Stats. Statblocks have been prepared for all the unique NPCs used in on this level.

When you finish all of these, will you be releasing a compilation (possibly at a lower price than buying them all separately)?

Absolutely! That's just a few weeks out from now, so I'm releasing chapters as I write them for those currently running the campaign. I want both those that find the Companion before and during their campaign to have equitable access to this series.

Awesome! I'll be impatiently refreshing your author profile page, waiting for that compilation to appear!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
