City of Eyes

This is the PDF version. If you are looking for the module for the Fantasy Grounds VTT - click here.

An original Ravenloft domain for 5th edition, containing:

  • A 13 chapter adventure of lovecraftian sleuthing, unknowable truths and eldritch mystery for levels 15-20. The City of Eyes is a memorable Tier 4 adventure designed to challenge the mightiest of mortal characters.

  • Fortunes of Ravenloft fully integrated with the 54 card Tarroka deck (available from Gale Force Nine separately) or a standard deck of cards to determine key aspects of the adventure, and provide a different experience with each play through, [as seen in Curse of Strahd].

  • Many fully mapped out locations, seeded with terrible truths, ghastly discoveries and lamentable interior decoration

  • Many random tables split over several chapters and ten appendices for generating domain specific encounters, madnesses, clues, wild magic and more.

  • Spells, races and backgrounds unique to Elysium

  • An armoury of sinister magical items with which to face the darkness

  • A host of cryptic allies, adversaries and monsters suited to a waterlogged hell

  • Secrets buried in the adventure itself...for those with the eyes to see them.

You want this adventure if:

  • Your players love a mystery, and theorycrafting possibilities
  • You enjoy roleplaying strange quirks, and don't mind going a little bananas
  • You want to answer any questions with an arch stare and the word "perhaps"
  • You like roleplaying aberrations, monstrosities and subtle manipulators
  • You appreciate the merits of a good tragedy (in the Shakespearean sense of the word)
  • Your players think that level 15+ characters are invincible, and you want to ruin a few friendships whilst also harshly disabusing them of that notion

I am curious, what's the status of the 3rd edition of this module?

Developing slower than I would like. I'm finishing up two big projects in March and April - "Unbridled" and "Standing Forlorn" - after which I hope to turn my attention back to it and get it out the door by the middle of the year. I'm juggling that and schoolwork at the moment, which means everything is just a bit more sluggish than I'd hoped.

I love this module and intend to run it this summer.

Three slightly spoilery questions:
1. As I understand it the Infinite Stair spirals up and down and is always climbed What happens if it is descended?
2. The map for the stair includes branches. Are there branches on the stair or (I think more likely) does one simply will to follow one branch or the other while climbing the stair?
3. Page 80 has a chart of locations and distances on the way to the undercity. These seem to be distances below the surface, but that would be a very long way down indeed and puts the undercity a great distance below the main city. Other references seem to place it closer. (For instance, access to the undercity through storm drains.) A 'maze of underwater passages, cliffs, overhangs and crags' are mentioned. Are the distances listed the distance one must travel through the underwater terrain to reach the undercity?

:D Three slightly-unhelpful answers

1. I imagine you might run into something you didn't expect. Probably with lots of teeth.
2. The latter. The stair is always an ascent or a descent, and the branches are metaphysical
3. The undercity isn't, strictly speaking, below the city. It's more of a state of mind, or perhaps a state of being. Distance is just one way the mind attempts to comprehend this, and in keeping with the rules of Elysium, the Undercity should be as close or as far as necessary.

So if I'm understanding Conclusion C correctly the party is stuck there forever? Does planeshift work?

As written, it's certainly one interpretation of that ending. Mercifully, the ending is the easiest part to alter, if those stakes don't make you and your group particularly happy!

How long do you reckon this adventure would take, given we play for roughly 3.5 hours a week?

Is there any way to purchase just the maps for use with Roll20? I've already purchased the PDF and I don't use Fantasy Grounds, and want to run this game over roll20.

Does this mean we will eventually see VTT maps with this PDF?

Dose this contain player maps for online use ?
Is this just a adventure for level 15-20 or can it take my plays from 15-20?

This pdf version contains marked maps for the DM. There is a link to a Fantasy Grounds version up above, which provides player maps for that VTT, amongst other increased online functionality :)

I'm looking to start running this around August, will there be any other relevant content for this setting released between now and then?
Customer avatar
Oliver C May 12, 2019 10:28 pm UTC

I don't have any immediate content in the works for Elysium, so you should be good to prep with the material here. In time, I may work on a third edition with the feedback I have from this edition, but I imagine that is some way off yet. I hope you have fun :) A little rain never hurt anyone, right?

Thanks Oliver! I do have a few questions, but they are spoilers so i'm not sure where I would go to ask them.

You can contact me directly through my Twitter (@deathbybadger). I'll happily help with any mechanical problems you're having or functional errata that need adding, though I can't (or more accurately, won't) give any extra insight into plot, character motivations, or answers to riddles inside the module. Some things are destined to remain mysteries, unless some very clever soui figures them out ;)

Any chance of this getting a print option?
Customer avatar
Oliver C March 11, 2019 11:15 pm UTC
I'd like that. Sadly, DMsguild authors have to be invited to the Print on Demand program, which only tends to happen for products that reach very high sales totals, so it may be some time before that becomes an option. Still, spread the word, and who knows? :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
