Selected Option:

Lost Laboratory of Kwalish explores an alternate expedition into the Barrier Peaks. The legendary inventor disappeared in the peaks eons ago… as it turns out, finding a crashed planar ship and studying its technology to fuel his own experiments—only now, Kwalish’s lost research is desperately needed!

For characters 5th-10th level.

This adventure explores two locations within the Barrier Peaks, and includes new monsters, magic items, and spells, plus sci-fi trinkets, random encounters, and even rumors of the area submitted by the player community! Further featuring new art, maps (from Claudio Pozas), and even a cartoon (from Jason Thompson)—as well as the famed suit of powered armor, as edited by Jeremy Crawford on the Dragon+ livestream!

I love this module, bought it through D&D Beyond. Running it currently for a party of 6 6th level characters. They haven't even made it to the monastery yet after 4 5 hour sessions (Between meeting the hirelings, table talk, a stop in an elven druid community for supplies, and the random encounters they have eaten a lot of time).

I do have a gripe though. The module has very interesting and unique locations which I love, but they have become a problem. this module really suffers from a lack of maps. You get a general map of the Monastery and Doine Gloine, but maps for the areas that matter for the sake of combat are sorely lacking. Even room/area dimensions and such are not really included. It has made it a challenge to find maps that will work for the combats on Roll20. Trying to find sci-fi/fantsy meshed maps that work well is just time consuming. I've been scouring map sites and such for weeks, and I have only managed to find a map that mostly works for the Cliff Edge encounter (basically the...See more

Amen on the maps. The drawings are lovely, but I can't run encounters off of the "maps" in the module. I'm going to spend a lot of prep time looking for or making battle maps.

I am getting ready to DM this for three players. It says "for characters 5th - 10th level", but doesn't specify how MANY characters. Should I have the three players each prep two characters, or tell them to prep one each at maybe 6th level (or higher)? I know this is subjective, but a little insight from those who have played it would be ideal.

Typically speaking, adventures are assumed to be for 4 characters. It shouldn't take much tweaking to do it for 3, if anything maybe lower the hp of monsters a little bit, but only if they're having issues in combat.

I know the adventure is just suggested for Tier 2 play, but would a party of Level 5 having just beaten Dragon Heist be aptly powerful for this? I'm giving them the laser rifle from the DMG just for this quest in case it gets too tough, but is it far too hard for a party even with this?

The Barrier Peaks are in the world of Greyhawk, but honestly could be placed any DnD setting.

I ran this game with 4 players starting at level 7, it could definitely work with 5 people at level 8 you may need to adjust some of the initial encounters to make them a little harder

Does the fantasy grounds version come with the purchase of this adventure or would I have to purchase it thru fantasy grounds in order for me to get it?

In general, to my knowledge, Fantasy Grounds or Roll20 versions of adventures are sold separately. I assume it has something to do with the fact that those companies are putting resources into adapting the adventures to be set up for their respective platforms.

I grabbed this over at DnD Beyond and its a very clever adventure - especially for fans of the original Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. The monastery could easily be used as an access point to the deeper levels of the ship if you wanted to turn it into a megadungeon. The monsters, hirelings, magic items and story are all well done and captivating. Good job.

Is there a specific reason behind the small area of Galder's Tower? It doesn't seem feasible to fit all the listed furnishings for each room.

Not to the monastery itself. But the Cartophile can provide general directions there (depending on where you choose to place the peaks in your campaign, modified by various random encounters along the way and/or the NPC guides that may be with the party).

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
