Spiritualists truck with restless spirits and wield psychic powers. Having survived a brush with death, spiritualists discover that not only can they sense the presence of the restless dead, they can also channel them. The forgotten promise they made while on death's door allows them to cast spells that manipulate the emotions and senses of others, as well as exert their will over life and death.

Play a Spiritualist if you want to...

  • be a medium between the living and the dead
  • torment your foes with curses and illusions
  • creep out others at the table with spooky powers

First off, I love the class that you have made. I have a player in my Eberron game running one (Bloody Blade) and he is enjoying it. However, now that I've seen in play, there's a few things that I've noticed that need some work:

Starting Equipment: If you are playing the Bloody Blade, you are stuck with light armor despite having access to medium armor. I would allow scale mail to match what other classes that can get medium armor as a result of a class feature.

Bloody Blade Archetype: There's a number of things I've noticed that needed some work as a result of seeing in play.

The expanded spells list has Hunter's Mark on it when the class has access to Hex. Technically speaking HM does some different things, but the one most players care about is the extra damage. In this case, Hex is better due to the fact it works on spells. In addition, I think adding in some the range weapon spell like Conjure Barrage that the Ranger gets would open up the archetype...See more

Just thought of a few things after I had posted, but I noticed that Spiritual Weapon, Spirit Guardians, and Guardian of Faith are not on the spell list. These seem to be very thematic given this is the Spiritualist Class and they all deal with some form of spirit. I sure I'm might be missing some other spells that could be added, but at the moment this is what sprung to mind when going over the list.

"If the creature’s current hit points equal its hit point maximum, it takes 1d6 necrotic damage. If the creature’s current hit points equal more than half its hit point maximum, it takes 2d6 necrotic damage. If the creature’s current hit points are equal to or less than its hit point maximum, it takes 3d6 necrotic damage"

Okay, so, I overall like this. Money well spent, Huffman's work is always pretty top notch. But I must complain about this portion of the wording for the Bloody Blade subclass's ability Killing Field. At first glance I assumed that it just worked like Toll the Dead, and I assume that's the intention, but the wording makes it... not that. The wording makes it broken.

The way I currently understand it, it essentially says: "if at full HP, 1d6, if more than half HP but not half HP, 2d6, if full HP or less than full HP, 3d6". It doesn't really get especially bad until the last one, but it could be more clear regardless.

Good catch, Brady! I am currently working on a major revision of the class which will include addressing this point of yours. The way the feature should work is, "If the creature's current hit points equal it's maximum hit points, it takes 1d6 necrotic damage. If the creature's current hit points equal less than it's maximum hit points but greater than half of it's maximum hit points, it takes 2d6 necrotic damage. If the creature's current hit points are half or less than it's maximum hit points, it takes 3d6 necrotic damage " That said, that's a bit wordy and I'm not sure it's worth all that bookkeeping and hp checking so I may streamline the ability a bit with the revision. Hope that clarifies things for you!

Am I right to assume a Spiritualist using Ectoplasmic Transubstantiation is immune to non-magical damage of all types? For example being immune to damage from a torch but being damaged by a Firebolt?

For the Blood money feature of the spirit of greed what are the Stygian coins for im not seeing anything that indicates it requires them?
Customer avatar
Benjamin H April 12, 2020 5:22 am UTC
CREATOR
Stygian coins are described in a text box. They basically work like gold coins but non-spiritualists see them as normal gold coins minted in the local currency instead of what they really are.

Hi, I’ve noticed that for your Plague & Poison subclass, it offers lesser restoration as one of the expanded spells, even though it is already on the regular spell list, is this a mistake?

That is an error. I'll look into correcting it when I do the update—thanks for pointing it out!

level 6 and I'm confused how many spell slot's I would have at that level and how many I would gain each level up

On the Spiritualist class table there is a column titled, "Spell Slots" that lists how many spell slots you have at each level. You regain all spell slots on a short and long rest.

At 6th level, you'll have 2. You'll get a 3rd spell slot at 11th level.

Hello. Love this class and looking forward to playing it. I did have one question regarding spells over 5th level. The table shows Spell Slots Level maxed at 5, but the spell lists show 6th-9th level spells. I was wondering how that worked. Thanks!

The Spiritualist is similar to the Warlock in that it's spell slots max out at 5th level but it can cast 6th through 9th level spells with a special feature that it has. In the case of the Spiritualist, that's the Occult Insight feature.

I may just not be seeing where it is, but where could I find the number of known spells for this class, or is it similar to the warlock table on what number of spells are known?
Customer avatar
Benjamin H November 22, 2018 6:55 pm UTC
CREATOR
They are a spells prepared, not a spells known class. How many spells they have prepared is detailed in their Pact Magic feature description (the answer is half Spiritualist level + Charisma modifier).

I love the look of this class, the only thing I have a gripe with after a brief look through is that it feels like it should be a Wisdom based class rather than Charisma, as perceiving and communing with spirits is very similar to what a Druid does, the difference being between primal spirits and ghostly ones. Plus there's already a bit of a bloat of charisma based casters and this would fit very nicely as a new wisdom caster.

I think Wisdom is a good alternative spellcasting ability for exactly the reasons you've stated. I chose Charisma instead because Spiritualists don't just perceive the invisible world, they also command it. When they channel a spirit they remain in control rather than just becoming possessed. It is also an oblique reference to the real world history of the blurry line between mediumship and being a huckster.

I also think that in the PHB there are an equal number of Wisdom (Cleric, Druid, Ranger) and Charisma (Paladin, Sorcerer, Warlock) casters so either spellcasting ability choice would tip the majority in that direction.

All that said, nothing breaks if you switch the spellcasting ability to Wisdom. It is a slight buff because Wisdom is a more important saving throw than Charisma.

You forgot Bard for Charisma casters, and a Ranger's spellcasting has such little impact on the class for the most part. You make fair points though for your reasoning though.

Another wonderful work, good job. I would like a major change in Speak with Dead to this class making it a summon ghost stuff rather than "animate dead head". Other thing that would be good is how the Spirit is in game, it's a unseen force that can move stuff (like unseen servant) or a spectral friend following the party?

I think this may be one of the best 3rd-party new classes I've seen. Tons of flavor, mechanics that are good and clever and original, neither too strong nor too weak. Well done!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
