The Mezzos Fragment: a 5th Level Horror Adventure

"No, no, no. This can't be true," his hands are shaking. "No, please. Jiro?" The hallway around them weeps a sour liquid, like the belly of some enormous creature. Olan's lantern sputters and flickers in the dark, but he can see Jiro clearly enough - even if he can't believe what he's seeing. Jiro's leather gloves are split, with sharp barbs of bone piercing from his unbelievably long fingers. "Jiro!" he screams again. Jiro doesn't look at him, but his back rises and falls in deep breaths. His armor is dripping blood down his lower back and onto the stone floor. His hair lies in clumps on the ground, sloughed off with wet strips of his skin. The voice, that constant voice, that's been whispering into Olan's mind finally falls quiet as Jiro finally turns toward his partner. Their years of adventuring, the long nights holding one another in the cold, the endless wounds they had both sustained, the horrors they had faced - a great many things raced through Olan's mind as Jiro's familiar green eye, now the size of a saucer, bloody and morphed to the middle of his gaunt face, stared back at him - unblinking.

When the thing that used to be Jiro began clawing through his mind, Olan tried to scream but couldn't make the sounds.

Lovecraftian Horror: Just in time for Halloween, this 10 page adventure is packed with the spookiest, most Lovecraftian stuff I could think of for even stalwart adventurers to face: Elder Evils. Beings beyond the rules of the Material Plane - near limitless and alien in every way. This adventure introduces three new aspects of Elder Evils for your party to interact with. Heavy nods to some of your favorite D&D baddies: Dendar the Night Serpent, Vecna, Tharizdun, and more.

Forgotten Realms or Homebrew Enabled: I leaned into some lore from the Forgotten Realms for location and possible factions - but kept the vast majority of the adventure setting agnostic! Take your players into the beset logging hamlet of Gold Falls as part of your ongoing campaign or a quick one-shot.

Concise and Open: This adventure was written for 3-6 hours of play, with plenty of room for roleplay and important PC desisions. However, this ten-page adventure can easily be tooled to span three or more sessions if the focus shifts on uncovering the mystery presented in this adventure.

Brutal or Cake-Walk, You Decide: Combat is a centerpiece to Dungeons and Dragons, but many adventures pit the PCs against overwhelmingly powerful foes or cardboard cutouts of enemies that fall over far too easily. This adventure has been focused on having a modular cast of Enemies, NPCs, and non-combat encounters.

One of a Kind Magic Item and Loot Galore: When facing off against otherworldly powers that corrupt and destroy - you probably deserve to find amazing things. Memorable treasture, 2 unique magic items, and 2 pre-established magic items for your party to track down. I can promise, whoever gets their hands on the Magical Greatsword "The Bloody Cross" or the "Unseen Stone" will never, ever, forget having it... even if they desperately wish they could.

Dyson Logos Map: Thanks to his wonderful Patrons, I finally got a chance to repurpose a beautiful Dyson Logos map for this adventure! So clean, so nice.

I am running this with my group. It has been great fun having them puzzle of all the various parts of. So far they have avoided disaster by the barest of margins. :-) I had one question though - There is mention of the "Empty One" being summoned: "Upon its summoning, they share a place in the initiative order and have a pool of hit points equal to the Fragment's current hit points at the time of the summoning plus The Empty One's hit point maximum." My question is where is the stat block for the "Empty One" so I can find it's hit point maximum? What are its abilities? What attacks does it have?

I'm so sorry, James, I didn't see this at all. I hope you found it.

For anyone who may come in with a similar question, Under "Emptiness" on page 5, it lists The Empty Man as a Star Spawn Seer!

Hello! I’m planning on running this quest for my group soon! In your info, you mention an “Unseen Eye” but I see it nowhere in the actual quest pages. What exactly is it, and where would it come from?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
