The Heist at Nimressa

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Players love it when a plan comes together, and this adventure will have your players planning and executing their own high-stakes heist of a fort on the border of a despotic realm. The Heist at Nimressa is author Jeremy Tuohy’s Dungeon Masters Guild debut and a 6-8 hour adventure for 3rd or 4th level characters.

While travelling the open road, the party encounters two good-hearted thieves with a potentially lucrative proposition: The despotic baroness Ytrix hoards a large treasure nearby, locked within her army’s fort. Wouldn’t it be exactly what she deserves to have that treasure stolen and given  to the needy that she’s so long ignored and oppressed? That’s what the party’s new companions think anyway, and they certainly have no ulterior motive for the job...

The treasure is protected by high walls, a legion of soldiers, a fanatical wizard, and plenty of other surprises to keep would-be thieves on their toes. The party will choose how to approach the fort, case the joint, make their plan, and execute their heist. When they're done—and if they're successful—they'll leave with a small fortune and even a few unique magic items.

Praise for The Heist at Nimressa:

"Jeremy Tuohy's NIMRESSA HEIST...does an excellent job of introducing NPC companions for the PCs and giving the DM all the right information to run them as a compelling and engaging arc through the scenario without ever overshadowing the characters.

This is a combination of good NPC profiles, including dialogue samples, combined with an arc that SUPPORTS the main action rather than constituting essential parts of the main action

This is a subtle distinction, but the PCs could shoot these guys in the head during the first scene and the rest of the scenario could still play out without a hiccup. But that would be unfortunate, because these two characters ENHANCE the scenario through their presence." - Justin Alexander, RPG Producer at Atlas Games; creator of thealexandrian.net

This adventure features:

  • A simple premise which makes the adventure easy to drop in an ongoing campaign.

  • An open-ended design that allows your players to infiltrate and execute their heist their way, and built-in social encounter guidelines allow talky PCs to shine alongside the thieves and warriors during the caper.

  • Two loveable NPC companions formatted so you can quickly “pick them up” and bring them to life.

  • In-document links between maps, descriptions, and references.

  • Printer friendly versions in US letter and A4 paper sizes.

New DM here. I'm wondering if I can run this with two players only? I don't see any guidance on party size. Is that because any size party will work, or should I be (e.g.) reducing the number of veterans encountered, or the challenge of some of the encounters. Thanks for any general guidance on this.

With just two players, you'd probably want to reduce the CR of the encounters that the PCs are supposed to have a fighting chance against (one manticore instead of two, for example). You can probably leave the veterans alone (except maybe just have one guarding the vault), since they're supposed to be big and intimidating to discourage an all-out assault.

Excited to run this! Just wondering, any tips to make it tricky for level 5-6?

Thanks!

I imagine the most straightforward way to up the difficulty for a higher level party would be to replace the stats of all the folks in the fort with higher CR monsters. Turn the veterans into gladiators and the manticores into chimeras, for example. Access to 3rd-level spells might make other aspects of infiltration easier, but the whole point is to give the PCs a playground to make clever use of their abilities so it'll be fine.

Hey! Just saw this a week late but I've uploaded a version of Ytrix's Fort with no markings. For some reason I'm getting an error when trying to change the download link name but it should be up there.

I'm a little confused. In the text, one of the NPCs is described as a high elf with a certain cantrip that heavily features in the plot.

But in the accompanying stat block, he's human and doesn't cast any spells.

Hey Adam,

That's definitely an error - he should be a high elf with that cantrip in the stat block. I'll fix that and get an updated version out soon. Thanks for catching that and letting me know!

I haven't used Fantasy Grounds before, but if it's simple enough to put together I don't see an issue with it. I'll look into it!

It’s not, especially if you’ve never used it. If you’re willing, I’d be able to do it. Just takes some coordination.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
