Lights Out at the Nightwatch Lighthouse

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The small coastal town of Pinepass spends its days in relative peace until the nearby lighthouse stops shining. Nobody knows what could be the cause but with reports of one ship already wrecked along the shores it won't be much longer before others follow. Travel across open ocean to reach the Nightwatch Lighthouse and reignite the flames above while also investigating the other much darker deeds below.

Lights Out at the Nightwatch Lighthouse is a 6 page, one-shot adventure for DnD Fifth Edition, set in a nondescript location allowing for it to easily be inserted into any current campaign. Written by David Barrentine who also crafted a stunning battlemap to go along with the adventure. This adventure can be a single night of fun for a group of 4-6 level 1-3 players or it could easily turn into the start of a larger campaign using some of the open story hooks littered throughout.

This was just awesome! I bought this probably over half a year ago to be my very first GM-ing experience. And it did not disappoint me. So well written and constructed, and so easily modifiable.

SPOILERS: I ended up skipping quite many combat encounters as I and my players enjoy more roleplaying-heavy sessions with just few combats here and there. I also kept lighthouse keeper alive to be rescued from the last chamber, as someone suggested that in the earlier comments. But the definitely funniest happening was that my players ended up asking more definitive description for sheriff and lighthouse keeper, from the major. And from the quick and scarce improvisation I could come up with, they speculated that the major seemed to have crush for the keeper. So I ended up hiding a love letter to the lighthouse and they loved it way more than expected, lol.

Comments like this really make my day! I'm so glad you loved this adventure and that it was easy enough to modify to really make it your own for both you and your group. If your party prefers more of a heavy role play game, you should check out my Helian Heist adventure. It's a loose sequel to the events in this game where the tables are turned and you're playing as the cult that you tried to stop at the end of this adventure. It's got a few heavier RP moments in it that are fun including a stage performance using a Dnd MadLib.

Hey, I read about your One-shot on DnD Beyond and immediately got interested.
I am a brand new DM (it was my own choice XD) and except for Neverwinter Nights for PC I have no idea about DnD. I am just getting started and after reading your sample about the plot I decided to try your story for my first ever session.

I was curious if it would be possible to get the village map of pinepass without the legend for the different buildings. I want to extend the roleplaying part by having them ask around and maybe bump into someone crazy I make up on the go :)
The same goes for the cave :)

Thanks, Eric

Hey, Eric!

Firstly, yes. I believe I still have the PSD file for this town map so I should be able to get this to you without the legend. Secondly, email me at dbarrentine06@gmail.com and we can continue this conversation. I'd ask for your email here, but I feel safer putting my own on here and just getting yours through there instead of having you post yours. If you'd prefer a quicker conversation, you can also reach out to me on Twitter @DavidBarrentine and I should be a bit more responsive.

Hey so this will be my first time DMing and all my friends are experienced players, I was wondering what’s a good level and how big should the party be? I don’t want to tpk them or not have it be a challenge.

If all of your friends are experienced, then I’d let them start at level 3 for this adventure. It’ll give them a few more options to play with. The sweet spot for player size is 3-6 with it being a bit on the deadly end for 3. If you have a large crew you can play as written and that should make it fun without having to worry about a TPK but if you feel it’s going too easy I’ve also got some suggestions in there to help bring a bit more challenge.

I hope you have a great time running this one and if you have any more questions on it, I’m happy to answer them.

Might run this with my friends who've never played before. How long does it take to play through on average?

I’ve run it several times and it generally goes for about 5 hours for me. If you don’t go long on the RP encounter with the mayor or explore some of the town first, you can shave about an hour off of that time.

I'm stoked that you got this for your first DM'img experience! I've done my best to make this as simple as possible on both the DM and player side of things. That being said, the two things I would keep an eye out for are:
1. The harpies at sea encounter. If you have a group of fully new players, I'd suggest sticking to just one harpy and ignoring the reload time on the harpoon launcher on the boat. Especially if your group is starting at level 1.
2. The final boss, which is a cultist, can hit really hard. Try to get your group to rest at the before heading to the lighthouse so they can get a level up (if they are level 1 or 2). Because the cultist has a spell, inflict wounds, that can knock a character down in a single hit if enough damage is rolled, make sure try not to overly use it. That can sort of cause things to quickly spiral.

All and all, even these suggestions might not be needed depending on the size of your group, level of the party, or experience of the players. Just play...See more

Awesome dude, ran the first session last night and for my first time, judging by the players reactions, everything went well. They got to the lighthouse and ended having a long rest before finishing it next week. Thanks for the input, really helped

That's great to hear! That long rest is going to end up helping them out a lot by the time they get to the end boss. Not sure if you are doing just a one shot or looking for a longer scale campaign, but if you are wanting to do a bigger scale campaign after the one shot, I recently published a level 1-20 story here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/312576/Knights-of-the-Shadow-Realm
It's a bit more open for them to explore chapter to chapter, but all roads tend to lead to the boss battle at the end of each chapter.

Will definitely pick that up after I finish this....and today i had a brainstorm

*POTENTIAL SPOILERS*

...…the paladin in the group went back for Russle to bring him to safety of the group instead of being by himself waiting on them alone at the pier onboard the ship, as they venture on into the lighthouse. I was thinking of substituting out the imp and instead having Russle on the alter as a sacrifice and the cult fanatic reveals that the Russle with the group is a doppelganger

That's a neat twist! When I was first getting this put out there, one of the comments I got was...

*DEFINITE SPOILERS*

...having both the sheriff and the lighthouse keeper already be dead felt like a drag because there was nobody to rescue. Adding this turn of events could make the encounter feel more dramatic and give the group something new to fight for. You could even include some new story hooks from the Russel tied up in the boss area.

Hello, I'm DMing at a friends request, having never done so before. I'm looking for something that's like, complete soup to nuts, monsters and all, just needs a person to run it. Does this contain all that? If not, what parts will I need to come up with myself?

Thanks in advance!

Hello!

This contains everything except for the stat blocks for the monsters. The stat blocks that are needed will be a Harpy, a cult fanatic, needle blights, violet fungi, and a swarm of bats. There is also an option to add in two other monsters (an imp and Darkmantle), but these two are optional and are only suggested if there is a larger party or a higher level party. With all of that being said, the monsters used in this are in the basic rules which are free to download from the dnd website, with the exception of the needle blights. They can be substituted with twig blights which are in the basic rules.

If you get this module and download the basic rules, you'll be set and won't have to come up with anything new. The adventure itself has the map illustrated already and any new custom items are outlined in the book.

I hope this helps and if you have any further questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them for you.

I noticed that you loaded up a zip of players maps for The Urchin of Camorr, which is amazing by the way thank you. I was just wondering if there is a possibility of doing the same for this module as well. I have the numbers covered up with little circles on Roll20, but honestly, as you can imagine, those little circles are a little silly.

I've got the zip file added. It breaks the map into two parts, the lighthouse section and the depths below so you can reveal the underside of the lighthouse easier. I hope this helps.

I'd love to hear it! I've run this 4-5 times at my own table but it's always more fun to hear how it played at other people's tables.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
