One by One, They Vanish

ADD TO WISHLIST >

One by One, They Vanish is a Dungeons & Dragons adventure using the 5th Edition rules. It is designed to be played by a party of 1st level adventurers. This adventure can be treated as a one-shot event, or added as a quest in a larger campaign.

Grey Sands Village is a small settlement overlooking the ocean. It is a quaint, quiet spot for a few farming families eeking out a living. Whilst there are no obvious signs of distress, the village is experiencing a strange hardship; many of its denizens have gone missing. No signs of struggle or bloodshed. One day they are there, and the next they are gone.

This adventure is especially useful as a great starting point for new adventurers. It begins with some simple investigative work and dialogue with the village folk before a night time revelation, leading to a short but perilous dungeon crawl. For new players, this guide contains all the elements of a classic game of Dungeons & Dragons, whilst providing some uniqe intrigue for more experienced players.

Ideal for 1st to 2nd level characters, lasting 2-4 hours.

If you enjoy this game, try my other guides, magic items and spells!

Have a great adventure.

Hi, is there a map or battle map of the cave system?
Or is there something close enough that I can find online?
Thank You!

Hello,
This one-shot was an early creation of mine (in fact, the very first homebrew I created) so I wasn’t much of a mapmaker yet. There is a map, but I can’t take credit for it; it was made in this very awesome generator:

Very easy to use, just set layout to ‘cavernous’ and lower the dungeon size and you’ll end up with something good.
Should be useful for other games too! I hope this was helpful, and thank you for playing!

Hi Julia,

You can absolutely move the village inland. The fact that is was on the coast was mainly so that it could tie-in to a journey on the Sword Coast/act as the first adventure in a new land. In the guide, Grey Sands village is described as being high above the beach with a path leading down the cliff-side to the water. You could set the village alongside a steep ravine, or do away with the elevation entirely.

The main thing is that there be a cave within a mile of the village that isn't easy to spot by randomly wandering around.

Hope that's helpful.

Hi! Before I buy this I just wanted to know: Is the fact that it’s a seaside village essential to the adventure or could I reasonably move it to a land locked location?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
