Grim Grinning Gauntlet

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A 4-6 hour adventure for characters of 4th (or 5th) level, Grim Grinning Gauntlet transports the heroes from a spooky abandoned tavern to a unique domain of dread, presided over by a Ghostly Host who has been dying to meet you. Once they enter the Host's domain, they must battle their way through a gruelling series of encounters and out the other side, else their own souls will become part of his spectral spectacle.

Just in time for Halloween, Grim Grinning Gauntlet was inspired thematically by Disney's Haunted Mansion attraction as well as mechanically by classic hack and slash video games such as the Gauntlet series, and is meant to be played as a short, high-energy one-shot adventure.

Grim Grinning Gauntlet uses the Tarokka deck (or normal playing cards using the conversion rules from Curse of Strahd, included in the PDF) to randomize the encounters the players face within the Host's domain, meaning the adventure will (basically) never play the same way twice. In addition to the encounters, the cards are also used to generate random "power-up" effects to help the heroes survive the Grim Grinning Gauntlet and return to the mortal world, though on their return trip they should, of course, beware of hitch-hiking ghosts!

This adventure was originally written for and playtested at Portland's Orcs! Orcs! Orcs! Tavern Pop-Up.

Version 1.1 Update: Grim Grinning Gauntlet now includes the statistics for all items and creatures not featured in the core three 5th edition books. It also includes the rules for using playing cards to simulate a Tarokka deck as presented in Curse of Strahd.

I've been trying to crack how to do an adventure with the Haunted Mansion, and I found this- Grim Grinning Gauntlet. It's using the basic setting of the haunted mansion for a video-game inspired combat fest, with power-ups from eating food [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
