The Truenamer

Ancient Magic Finally Awoken

Delving deep into ancient lore, learning primordial secrets of creation, and the forgotten language spoken by the gods themselves. Truenamers aren't your average arcanists - they change reality by utilising the lost magic of truespeech! Theorised to be the foundation of all modern magic, the truenamer's utterances have the power to transform the mundane into the magical, to knit flesh back together, and transform the very land around them.

What You'll Find Inside

This homebrew allows your players to create a Truenamer, complete with the following features:

  • The classic D&D 3.5 class updated for 5th Edition
  • An optional new form of linguistic magic for 5e called Truespeech
    • Mechanics to augment your utterances using Personal Truenames
    • Mechanics to try and cast beyond your daily limit, carefully balanced against existing spellcasters
    • Over 130 new Utterance Spells to affect People, Things, and Places, including reversible magic!
  • 7 Truenamer sub-classes (vocabularies)
    • The Acolyte of the Ego using 'Cadences' to alter and augment their physical form
    • The Bereft who learns the 'Word of Unmaking' one deadly syllable at a time
    • The Cryptographer who can extract and manipulate the truenames of others
    • The Fiendbinder who steals their power from fiends and gains a monstrous ally
    • The Forgotten who gradually erases their truename to act without consequence
    • The True Scholar who masters the combination of Arcane magic and Truespeech
    • The Wordspeaker a scholar of divine truespeech calling on Mantras to aid allies
  • 8 Truenamer Feats
  • 34 Truespeech magic items and artifacts
  • 2 New downtime activities: Truename Research and new Magic Item Crafting options
  • A custom character sheet page to keep track of Truespeech

If you're new to the Truenamer, hopefully this homebrew will give you the same sense of the wonder and possibility I felt with the announcement of completely new forms of magic, and that it will inspire you with the possibilities that Truenaming in D&D presents for characters, stories, and adventures.

Version 1.4 Update (2022)

Hey folks! To celebrate over 1,600 downloads over the past 4 years I've updated The Truenamer with some minor adjustments!

  • All In One! All the content previously available in Beyond Words is now united in one single book. All 7 subclasses, the feats, magic items, and the crafting downtime activity.
  • Content Updates! Durations are updated to a minimum of 1 minute, I've included a suggestion for DM's to run the class without the added magic system for simplicity, some utterances have had wording fixed, and some tables have been corrected.
  • Quality Updates! The entire book layout has been updated, some spelling and grammar have been updated, image quality is improved, and the cover art is prettier than ever, complete with pdf bookmarks to help navigation.
Thank you to everyone who has supported my work so far, and I hope you enjoy the latest, best edition of the Truenamer.
If you enjoyed this class then you're very welcome to check out my other D&D Classes like The Invoker! Here's to another four fantastic years of Dungeons & Dragons!

Kind regards, Klaus.

I haven't checked in on this in a long time so coming back and seeing the recent updates was really awesome. In awe with this level of post-release support, thank you for making a great product even better.

I absolutely love the mechanics and flavor of this class, the archetypes are rich with story, and it looks very nuanced. However the utterances, which seem like they are supposed to be roughly equivalent to other classes' spells, seem incredibly weak. The damage is very low by comparison and most buffs seem to last 1 round. Am I missing something here? It seems like a Namer should be a very powerful person, but only the uppermost utterances seem to reflect this idea.

Hey there, thanks for the kind words. In regards to the custom spells, I largely wanted to incorporate all the spells from the original 3.5 truenamer to 5e, but it turns out creating an entire magic system from scratch and trying to populate it for a new edition was me getting in over my head. There's definitely some balanace issues to sort out!

Damage is limited, but even the original class was never damage-oriented, they were supposed to be more versatile than that with a focus on sly alterations to the world that could give the party an edge in battle. 5e classes tend to be more independent than that and it's not something I adapted for. Durations are also are absolutely kinda short lived. In the lore because of the universe wanting to return to normal, but I think this was a quirk I also took from the original 3.5 class, but for 5e I should have adjusted the durations to be more in line with their spellcasting counterparts - it became another daunting task of adjusting every single new spell...See more

Thanks you for the update! For some reason when I download the file now, all I get is the spell sheet. Is anyone else having this issue?

Hey! Just wanted to say that I'm really enjoying this class so far and I noticed that you're planning on releasing an additional expansion to it sometime this year. I was wondering if you had some kind of release date in mind for when you might expect to release it? Regardless, thanks so much for this! I always wished I'd been around to play Truenamer back in 3.5e (even though I've been told it was absolute garbage) and so I was excited to see this for 5e.

Hey thanks for supporting! I haven't been able to focus on working on the class as much as I would like lately just because of obligations to my own D&D game, and work stuff. I'm hoping to take some time off to focus on the next batch of updates and finalise the Beyond Words expansion in April.

Also you're very welcome, it's really encouraging to hear you're enjoying the class!

Hello there,
I really like the class the way you made it :), but i have some problems with understanding on how to cast the utterances.

Do i always have to make a truespeech check when i want to utter one, or do i just hit? And what DC would this Check have?
Some Utterances also state "Make a truespeech attack". How does this work?
It would be very kind if you could give me some "example combat cenarios" from which i can understand how and when to do these checks.

Thanks in advance.

Hey! Thanks very much, hopefully I can clear some confusion up for you. So the class works a lot like a regular spellcaster, under the class description there's a section called 'Truespeech' which talks about Speaking an Utterance, and Truespeech Ability.

Like normal magic, each utterance asks the target to make a save, you to make an attack roll, or the effect just happens.

For example:
Chromatic Orb cast by a wizard, works the same as a reversed word of caring. You make an attack roll using 1d20 + proficiency + intelligence Vs. the target's AC.

Cause Fear cast by a wizard, works the same as a reversed Morale Boost. The enemy has to make a wisdom saving throw against your save DC, this is 8 + proficiency + intelligence.

Mage Armour cast by a wizard, works the same as Defensive Edge. In this case the effect simply happens.

Each utterance explicitly says if you should be making an attack roll, the enemy should save, or if it just applies an...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
