The Duelist

Mastery of the Blade

While every peasant can pick up a sword and dub themselves a ‘warrior’ it takes a person with true skill to become a duelist. While fools will rely on magic, or even worse their ‘brute strength’, only one who is a tactical genius can rise to the ranks and master the art of the duel. As blades cross you weave between blows, striking at your opponenets weak spots and rending life from their body with a single blow.

Stances & Styles

Naturally offence and defence are two scales every good duelist must measure, one nevertheless finds themselves favouring one or the other. A duelist may overhwelm their foe with a flurry of strikes and precise killing blows, or sit patiently and retaliate with devastqating counter attacks, elegant dodges and graceful deflections. These styles are only amplified by the stances of the duelist, tactical positioning that allows for quicker movement, better defences or even expose a foes more fatal weak spots.

Gage R:  "Since many of the abilities run off the action economy the class is able to hit hard or defend without feeling overpowered, and the small damage bonuses mesh well with the fact that the class slowly builds up to making more attacks via its later abilities (Especially in the case of the Poised Duelist). The class is good for both mechanics and character when building a cultured fighting noble or a lightly armed and armored warrior straight out of One Thousand and One Arabian Nights or Sinbad."

I like it! I think it's definitely on the stronger side, but I am hesitant to call it too strong. In response to commenter Gage R: I believe the Killing Blow feature to be okay. Compared to GWM, which we all know is standard for the vast majority of STR based martials, the damage output is weaker (it really makes sense to take averages here instead of maximized dice rolls; another thing pointing to Killing Blow being more reasonable than GWM when comparing damage) but the ratio is better. GWM's ratio is -5/+10, while here we have (on average) -2,5/+3,5. And that is at Level 11. If you truly wanted, you could hit 60 damage / round with a proper GWM+PAM build by Level 6. I truly believe Killing Blow to be fine. Slapping a -5 penalty on that would make Killing Blow way too weak. Although the damage averages increase once we factor in the bonus from Fine Finesse. All in all: Seems okay to me, since it's balanced by the smaller hit dice, the high level requirement and inability to gain resistance to incoming damage...See more

Reallly appreciate the detailed feedback! This is a pretty old class so it badly needs a revamp. I'll take your reccomendations into account when I'm giving it some polish!

Glad to hear that! I just discussed the class with another party member of mine in a game where I'll play a 9th level duelist, so I can get some hands-on experience and see how my theorycrafting holds up. I also changed my mind about the Level 20 feature. I didn't realize it used a reaction. The feature is absolutely fine, the power level is nothing to worry about here. I'm curious about changes you might make, but even if you change nothing, I'm totally thrilled to play one and I think nothing is in *dire* need of changing. Except the drunkard. hehe.

Now that you have made some changes to Fine Finesse, the opposite problem now arises. Whereas before it was too weak, It is now too strong. Same goes for Killing Blow. I think a good compromise would be to have Fine Finesse be applied once during the Duelist's turn. At early levels, before Extra Attack, that +2 being applied once per turn will still be stronger than the old +1, while at later levels, a +6 applied once per turn isn't so bad. Also, I'd recommend returning Killing Blow to a solid -5. It was already strong enough, and by far one of the favorite abilities of my Duelist player. His reaction to the -1d4 was that a strong ability was now made OP (remember that the 1d10, unlike the +10 to damage of the great weapon master, multiplies on a crit, potentially dealing up to 20 damage).

Other than that, I still love this class. We're still using it in games even up till now. I also noticed you updated to 2.0, but I forgot to read the changelogs before updating. What were the changes?

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
