UPDATE 2023
: A few "quality-of-life" improvements/changes, a new chamber below the catacombs, and a new PNG overlay of the DM Notes. See Update image at the very bottom for a preview.

UPDATE 2020: The Ravenloft battle maps have been "remastered"! Please see the Update Summary image at the bottom of this product description for a synopsis of the many improvements coming with this update.

Inside the product you'll find:

  • Full Resolution PNG files of every individual room and each complete floor of Ravenloft (with and w/o grid)
  • Those same files as 'unfurnished' variants so you can create your own castle from scratch!
  • VTT-compressed JPEG versions of every complete floor at drastically smaller file size (20MB PNG files > 1MB JPEG files)
  • 287 assets made from Ravenloft's interior for you to optionally use in your own mapmaking, including a token for Strahd himself.
  • 'DM Maps' of entire floors with labels corresponding to the module and notes included to assist in understanding Ravenloft's layout (low res example)
  • 3 Print-ready PDF files separated into letter-sized compatible rooms and larger rooms. All of these files make it instantly easy and possible to print Ravenloft's entire interior on a standard home printer.
  • A User's Guide for additional context, suggestions on use, etc.

I made these rooms from scratch myself and used them with my own players while playing through Curse of Strahd. We found that getting to reveal rooms as they explored through the Castle was a huge boon to the discovery process and my hope is that you will enjoy using them as much as we did. If you find that this product improved your gaming experience please feel free to check out more of my maps on our website, venatusmaps.com.

Please feel free to comment here or email at: info@venatusmaps.com with any questions, feedback, or concerns.

I just printed out my maps on card stock. Game on. They look great. I will cut them out and adhere them to foam board to give added stability. I'll lay it all down as the players go. Let the Wedding at Ravenloft and the night of cat and mouse begin!

It's worth the price of print.

Thanks for putting this together. I love the D&D minds on DMsGuild.

I am having a lot of trouble aligning these to grid on Roll20, I saw you said something about 155 pps but I don't see that as an adjustment option for roll 20

Hey all,

I've just finished printing, and am getting ready to cut. I've got an accordion folder to organize things, but I have a question.
Should I leave the letter/number codes on the grid pieces? This seems like it would help simplify set up and tear down, but maybe there is an easier approach I'm missing. I've thought of leaving both the number/letter codes and the area name on, but I think I want to cut the name off to make the castle feel less familiar.

I thought of writing the number/letter and name identifier on the back of each piece, but wanted to see what other people did when they printed this off.

Thanks!

This map pack is pretty cool, and I was looking for something like this. I have been running CoS for a few friends, and I was hoping to find a map pack that contains all of the map pieces. I bought one from some one else, and it's missing a large amount of the maps in the book, which I was highly disappointed with. I've been using card stock to print out on and it does work well. I do have a question though.

I see people have complained about it not matching up directly with the 1-inch grid when printed. Is this because the map isn't to scale when printed from a regular home printer? I do use 8.5 by 11 paper to print.

How many pieces of paper would I need if I had to print out the entire set for just the players to explore? Are the map tiles lined up where one room is connected to another, or are they all set up so that I can cut them out and use them in another game that doesn't have the castle?

Hey guys, do these work on Foundry now? And if so, are we able to use them on a CoS stream?

Hi, this looks incredible. Any chance you could answer a few questions for me before I buy it? (you might have answered some already for other people - I've had a look through previous answers, but not sure how they all line up with the timing of the update)

1) Is there a printing guide for things like margin settings etc? Can see a few comments regarding printing coming out at wrong size (15/16 inch etc) - was that pre-update?

2) I'm in the UK so would be printing A4 (8.27" x 11.7") rather than Letter (8.5" x 11."). Would these still be compatible for printing or would the scaling be off?

3) What size paper would be needed to print the larger rooms off - I have access to an A3 printer, big enough or would I need something bigger?

4) Is this the layout as per the module, or is there any homebrew involved?

Thanks in advance!

Hi David! I'll do my best here.

1) Noooot especially no. I do have a base printing guide for any of my battle-scale maps writ large, but in my experience printers kind of -suck- and it's tremendously difficult for me to assess issues that would apply to any generalized kind of problem. My general advice would be to consult the guidance provided by the model/brand of the printer you're using and to print in small single-page batches until you're confident you've got it right. OR I've always had consistent success sending it to a local printer who handles that all for me!

2) I've got -another- update "in the works" for an A4 compatible PDF but have had to continually push it off as I'm just drowning in other work at the moment. From what I understand of others who've had to print in A4 there may be a very slight proportional alteration, but nothing that I would imagine significantly impacting its ability to be used for the traditional 1in grid scale.

3) I do not think...See more

This is an absolutely phenomenal battle map set for Castle Ravenloft. Every room is meticulously laid out and it feels like this could have been an official product from Wizards of the Coast. I would have easily paid $30.00 for this battle map pack.

I am running an in-person CoS campaign and I was dreading Castle Ravenloft. Theatre of the mind is very taxing on me so I knew I wanted a map, but I was dreading trying to sketch out every room of that IMMENSE castle over and over again on a dry erase board. And then I found this. It was a lot of work to print off and laminate each room of the castle, but my goodness it was so worth it, and I have an absolutely fantastic set of battle maps that will really immerse and impress my players.

10/10 product, and probably the best thing I have ever purchased here on DMs Guild!

I must be missing something somewhere, so I apologize for a silly question. I'm used to maps that I use with Roll20 providing me with unit dimensions, but I haven't been able to find that for the VTT maps anywhere. I've tried setting them by hand in Roll20 and guessing a bit, but so far I haven't been able to get them to line up properly to the roll20 grid. Could I get the recommended dimensions for the VTT ready maps? And again, if this is listed somewhere in the package, my apologies.

Hi Maggie! Not a silly question at all! Obviously the particular dimensions will range from map to map, but in general the "pixels per square" ratio is 150pps, setting that as your resolution per square should get you to where you need to be.

Despite what the update summary says, this map is poorly aligned to a standard 1-inch grid and doesn't work with Foundry VTT. I definitely don't recommend this product, since it's not exactly being truthful.

Hey! Sorry you're having issues--we've tested it ourselves in VTT as have many, many others. We're looking to get another update rolled out this month with it being spooky season and all. I've got a couple of pixel alignment things in my errata to-do already, but please let me know what problems you're having specifically and I'll try to either address them here or see that they're fixed in the upcoming update!

It would be great to have the DM's Maps in grayscale/print-friendly for reference! Wonderful maps to be being printed on stockcards and played like Betrayal!

Just got this the other day and had it printed on the highest quality paper fedex had. $175 for the whole castle. Totally worth it. This makes up such a good map. Wish I had looked at the DM Maps sooner. Spent so much time looking for K23 which is actually listed as K26 and does not show the stairs going all the way down. Still working on cutting out the pieces and putting them all together. This is going to be such a huge help to exploring the castle in my live sessions. Thank you!

Also, if you need to get from Map 12 to Map 5 via the western stairs, just use your imagination, because they aren't there.

Hi Brian! Thanks for purchasing! Sorry to hear you may be having some trouble?

When you refer to the "western stairs", I assume you are referring to K79. These stairs lead from K78 on Map 12 to K72 on Map 11; they do not connect to Map 5 at all. Those specific stairs are among the couple of areas that I outline in the product's read me that are intentionally omitted because they are both a) very long and b) literally nothing happens on them. If I were to include them visually on the map it would create a very awkward corner in one section that would also make the (already large) files even larger. Hope that makes sense.

As regards your other point on the maps stacking I'd love to hear more details on where you're finding issues! I try to come back to this map set every now and again to improve it seeing as how so many others find it helpful in their campaign, so if you've got feedback that will help me align the (admittedly complicated) maps better I'd gladly receive it!

These are great maps. However, if you are attempting to make a multi level map, they don't match up.

I honestly wish these style of maps were available for my other campaigns (tyranny of dragons and frostmaiden) as they are brilliant and ideal for large scale dungeon crawling. My favourite map so far.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
