Scrying Into His Handkerchief - Waterdeep Faction Adventure

A mission brief from Chapter 2 of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist turned into a 2 hour adventure!

The first Bregen D’aerthe mission on page 34 of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist requires that the characters steal a noble’s handkerchief and give it to a tiefling girl down by the wharf. Scrying Into His Handkerchief answers the questions: Which noble? Why him? Where can we find him? What happens if we get caught? Who is the tiefling girl, and why are we giving the handkerchief to her?

This adventure gives the characters a chance to explore a bit more of Waterdeep that I had a great time learning about from old source material like FR1 - Waterdeep and the North, City of Splendors, and Ed Greenwood’s fantastic Volo’s Guide to Waterdeep.

Interaction, exploration of the city, two combat encounters, and an all new dice game!

Six pages of adventure for around 2 hours of play.

Two encounter sheets with stat blocks, encounter overviews, environment descriptions, difficultly and XP, and a place to track initiative and enemy hit points.

Since the characters won’t be learning anything interesting about the Bregan D’aerthe faction by completing this particular mission, it would also be a fine introductory mission for another non-lawful faction like the Zhentarim or the Xanathar’s Guild (or maybe even Force Grey)… or a shady benefactor in any campaign setting.

Rather than limit the Bregan D’aerthe missions to drow or particularly unscrupulous characters, I suggest that Jarlaxle approach any non-lawful character. He need not reveal anything about his organization to them in order to engage their services as outlined in the chapter.

I'm buying this solely for the title and pouty-faced art, and not just because I love Jarlaxle. It keeps making me giggle.

If you enjoy my Dad puns, check out "All in Dray's Work"! Here's another piece from the same artist with a nice pout:

I have a new favorite artist. This piece perfectly captures my mood as I ponder life being an educator during a pandemic.

Hi Paul!

Loving this adventure, have you got any plans to expand on more of the Bregan D'aerthe's later missions, or any of the factions in general?

I am hoping to write ready-to-run adventures like this one based on all the faction mission hooks in chapter 2 of Dragon Heist. See "More from this Title's Contributors" above for my other adventures so far.

In the mean while, I also recommend these titles. They aren't as thorough as the style I'm writing, but do flesh out the simple hooks given in the campaign books:

Popping in to say my players succeeded in snatching ol' Amcathra's handkerchief right at the moment everyone was distracted by the Death Card being pulled at the next table over.

This adventure has been the highlight of my players campaign thusfar, and we're a few sessions past it at this point.

Still hoping you do more!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
