Waterdeep: A Tail of Two Fishies

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This is the PDF version. The Fantasy Grounds version is here.

This product has been updated to version 1.2 with some fixes and additions (see full changelog below).

Waterdeep: A Tail of Two Fishies is a comedic heist adventure to steal the Xanathar's goldfish Sylgar from right under the beholder's eyes.

This is a five-hour adventure for 1st to 4th level characters. When playing this adventure, expect to encounter any of the following: a talking goldfish, a table-flipping bugbear, a gnome with ichthyophobia, robot beholders, a disco dance floor, a giant slot machine, a book titled "Wizardry for Dummies," and a chance to steal from a laundry list of magical artifacts out of the Xanathar's personal treasury. This adventure works well as a one-shot or as part of a Waterdeep: Dragon Heist campaign, and there are instructions for inserting the adventure into any number of different places in Dragon Heist.

Xanathar's Guide to Civilization

In addition to the adventure itself, this product also includes a separate PDF called "Xanathar's Guide to Civilization," which is a player options supplement featuring options that work well in a city-based campaign, especially in Waterdeep. The supplement includes the following:

  • Three Subclasses:
    • The Duelist, a strategic fighter that shifts between different stances for different situations.
    • The Exorcist, a monk that specializes in banishing evil spirits and supernatural beings.
    • The Falconer, a ranger who bonds to a hunting bird and fixes many of the beastmaster's biggest problems.
  • Three Backgrounds:
    • Adventurer Fan - You worshipped a famous adventurer, and now you want to follow in their footsteps.
    • Agent of the Eye - You served the Xanathar Guild as a smuggler, an assassin, or a veterinarian.
    • Reformed Cultist - You were once a member of a horrific cult, and now must live with your dark past.
  • Eight Feats
  • And insightful commentary written by the Xanathar!

This adventure comes with the following files:

  • Waterdeep: A Tail of Two Fishies PDF - 45 pages of adventure, including six player handouts and three new magic items. Fully bookmarked.
  • Xanathar's Guide to Civilization PDF - 16 pages of player options, including three subclasses, three backgrounds, and eight feats. Fully bookmarked.
  • Three Maps - A battlemap, a dungeon map, and a map of Waterdeep. There are also gridless variants for the first two, and a no locations variant for the latter.

Changelog:

  • October 10, 2018:
    • Version 1.0:
      • Initial release.
  • November 6, 2018:
    • Version 1.1:
      • Minor text fixes for both documents.
      • ATTF: Added new suggestion for inserting adventure into chapter 4 of Waterdeep: Dragon Heist.
      • XGtC: Changed hunting bird to use talons instead of beak.
      • XGtC: Added "Fantastic Beasts and How to Use Them" sidebar for Falconer.
  • November 27, 2018:
    • Version 1.2:
      • Art fixes and more text fixes for both documents.
      • XGtC: Hunting Bird now Dodges when not given an order.
      • XGtC: Exorcist's Spiritual Retaliation is now magical.

This was one of the greatest eventures I've run for low level characters. It was memorable and very fun. Huzza! I made terrains out of Styro to fit the disco room and the Casino. I didn't start my characters in Jail. I found another way to get them involved.

This is perfect for Dragon Heist! My players are loving how involved they can get in the city of Waterdeep, and this is yet another side adventure that can feature the people/factions they have already met. So much fun to run as well

This is one of the most entertaining adventures I have ever DM'd. I loved it, my players loved it. It really helped that particular group of fairly inexperienced players mesh as a group. I've played for years in several ongoing groups, and this is one of my all-time favorite adventures.

Question: Where did the character Randal Amcathra come from? I'm doing some reading on the family and the name came up through google for both your pub and in a video game render...just wondering where you got the name as I'm trying to put together a list of family members. Thanks

Randal was my own creation, but House Amcathra was one of the noble families listed in Dragon Heist under Character Backgrounds in the introduction. They're also mentioned off-handedly in Sword Coast Adventurers' Guide under Amphail.

I'm assuming any other mention of Randal specifically elsewhere is just a coincidence.

Played this as a one shot (that ended up being a 3 shot because my players love to roleplay), and they had a fantastic time!

This adventure has a great mix of creative social and combat situations, so your group has multiple options for getting things done. I especially appreciated the humor scattered throughout.

I ended up making my own custom lair map using some pre-made assets along with some good ole fashioned drawing and even changed up the dance floor so I could change the floor pattern every round (the wonders of online gaming). I would definitely run this again.

This adventure is wonderful, especially the Xanathar's secondary lair. I dropped it into Dragon Heist and my players really enjoyed it.

The only thing that could improve this adventure would be hyperlinks within the PDF to make it easier for the DM to go back and forth between sections. Like most adventures, I had to go back and forth quite a bit, and I would have liked to be able to do so faster.

Forgive the noob question, but I'd like to ask about levels/xp for this one. I've DM'd for my kids a bit, but I'm going to start with this as an intro to Waterdeep Dragon Heist with them and a couple of their friends. Fifth graders. I'm planning to level them at milestones instead of awarding individual XP because kids and because inexperienced DM. Once we start Dragon Heist I figured I'd go through the exercise of tracking XP in order to be sure I'm leveling them appropriately. For this particular adventure, however, if they start at level one would they end at level two or level three? I'm thinking that the first couple of levels usually go pretty quickly and since these are young people I'll probably be somewhat generous with my leveling.

I like to be generous with leveling as well in the early levels. If they start at 1st level, I would suggest leveling them up to 2nd level after Part 2 (before they go into the Xanathar's Sanctum). Then, level them again to 3rd level after this adventure is over. They would start Dragon Heist a little stronger than normal, but that just lets them get through the introductory bits a bit faster without causing any harm.

I hope that helps!

Used this module within the WD:DH campaign. A lot of fun, some silly moments but also some tense moments. Has a little bit of everything! Would recommend. Also, as a new DM, I found it very easy to run.

Not able to leave a review since I didn't purchase it, but my DM did and I played it. Very good fun little adventure. Our group has a tendency to make light fun of any situation, but the adventure framework just let us slide right into the jokes. Last scene feels very hectic, but that is obviously what the writer was going for. I'd give it 5 stars easily and if you want to listen to a long play of it check out rollinnerdypodcast.

Hey everyone this adventure is amazing! I just played it last night with my first ever dm Richard Gejji! It was an action packed adventure mixed with stealth and.... dancing! It is very rewarding if you of course do the right and noble things. But anyways this adventure is worth it the pictures are amazing and it’s just really fun and rewarding! If you are starting a new game this could be a great beginning adventure and fun for new players! I had a lot of fun yesterday and we solved riddles and slashed beholders in half! So if you love Waterdeep,The Xanathar, or breaking the rules and you want to support these awesome people go ahead and get this adventure! I loved every second of it and your players will probably to, but they will have to think strategically, tactically to infiltrate The Xanathar’s lair and live to tell the tail or tale! Thank you again so much to the team that helped make this it is an amazing adventure and it really is one of my favorites that I hope to use and new players!

I'm trying to locate Richard Gejji. If you are the same who was the DM at Origins Game Fair, running Adventure League games, I did not get your DCMI number for my log sheet. I know it's minor, but if there is anyway you can send me a private message or just reply here, I can update my logsheet and make it complete.

One and the same.

Do you have an email I can contact you with? I don't believe dmsguild has private messaging.

I wanted to note, a lot of edits you made to the WOTC supplied images are 100% not kosher. The artwork is supplied without the rights to alter it. The cover of the first product, as well as the Xanathar image in the guide are altered in this way.

I would correct this.

Sorry for the late response. The FG version is ready (link at top of page). I announce new releases on my Twitter account @YMichaelZhang if you want to follow that (I don't really tweet much else). I do have a few upcoming adventures that are likely to be posted around April of next year.

We have no control over AL legality, so it's pretty unlikely unless the powers that be will it so.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
