The Boundless

A Sailing Ship

This small document details a well armed frigate that your players can steal, own, sink, or plunder. It is intended for use with the Expanded Sailing document also available on the Dungeon Master's Guild

Contents

  • Plans of the weather and gun decks of The Boundless, a well-armed, 38-gun frigate
  • A stat block to make it simple to see what your ship is able to do when in a tight situation
  • Simple descriptions of key crew members that any ship worth its salt should have aboard.

For more detailed descriptions of the rules in this document (such as how the new gun types work, or for more upgrade options), please consider checking out the Expanded Sailing document.

This is really great. I do have two questions, however.

1. The standard crew (150) doesn't match that listed in Expanded Sailing (225). Neither do the stats for passengers or cargo. Is there a reason for this?
1a. Follow up question: how many of the crew are marines?

2. Will you be doing any more of these for other ships (like brigs, caravels, ships-of-the-line)? That would be really great!

Hi there. I'll be honest, it's been about a year and a half since I put this together. I believe the reason the crew number do not match is because the number given in Expanded Sailing is actually a combination of crew and marines, so the 150 would be the amount of crew to adequately man the ship (enough for approximately 4 men per cannon and to man the sails etc), which would give you around 75 marines.

I am actually in the process of (slowly) putting together a version 2 of Expanded Sailing in which I intend to resolve various discrepancies I have discovered, adding extras I wish I'd included the first time around, and providing similar stat-block write-ups for a variety of ship types. The biggest issue with putting this together is the lack of standardisation on historic sailing ships, which makes finding out facts (such as an 'average' crew size) quite difficult.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for getting back to me, this really helps. I can imagine the difficulties involved in sorting out specifics, and I really appreciate that you're going to the trouble to share material with us. Looking forward to the release of Expanded Sailing v2!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
