Curse of the Headless Horseman (A Halloween themed adventure)

An adventure for 5th level characters (Contains suggestions for levels 1st through 4th as well) with Halloween themes for some October fun.  As a side-quest it is designed to be used in just about any world.  The titular Headless Horseman was not designed after the Headless Horseman as previously found in Ravenloft of older editions.  However, the adventure is well suited to work as a Ravenloft adventure.

The adventure is 20 pages, with a custom legendary creature. The adventure's theme and ending allows for a DM to easily transistion their game to either the Shadowfell or Feywild.  Most groups will find the content will last one to two game sessions of ~3-4 hours each, depending how much optional content and combat is used.

There is limmited art padding in the adventure.  You may find this as a boon or bane.

Hello, very interested in this one shot for my groups special Halloween session.
One question: Could I finish this entire one shot in a session lasting 4-6 hours?

I believe when I took my group through it, it took them about 6 to 7 hours. However they went 'off script' breaking into houses for several hours. So results may vary.

Awesome, my group said they are okay with running it a bit later since it'll be our Halloween special.
Also, I have a group of 5 - I want them to struggle with it a bit and not blast through everything, not even go through fairly easily, but I want them to think they might die, what level would you recommend?
And thanks for quick reply!

In honor of hitting Silver on the first sale of this year's October, I've put the document through large editing update.

Information about failing the Dex check to get the "Ring of Rhyming" is missing. It describes what success is and then says "Failure" and then moves on to describing what the item does.

Other than needing an editing review for spelling and grammar, this is a pretty solid adventure that leaves it open for the DM and players to work it through as they wish. I'll leave a review once I've run it this weekend.

Hi, I appreciate this and any feedback you might have after you run the game.
I believe the intent for failing to get the ring was to follow the same rules as failing to get the apple. Which I shall fix in the next version.
Thanks

Not a comment about the module but a comment for those of us who use miniatures. Ral Partha sells a headless horseman mini!

This has my interest but my players are not at 5th level. Can the encounters be adjusted for lower levels and not lose any of the gaming experience / story or is it a hard minimum level?

I don't have any hard conversions listed for lower levels in it yet, but I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to adjust. The biggest change would be the horseman himself. If you dropped his AC, and ignored some of his abilities it could work out. I might updated it with various conversions when I get a chance.

I've updated the adventure with suggestions on running for lower leveled characters.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
