Classic Modules Today: B9 Castle Caldwell and Beyond Redux (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

In 1985, TSR published the module named “Castle Caldwell and Beyond” with the module code “B8”. It was written by Harry Nuckols, and illustrated by Clyde Caldwell and Doug Watson. It consisted of one 32 page booklet and a cover folder with dungeon maps.

This module is five mini-adventures for use with 6 characters of 1st-3rd level.

This conversion guide allows DMs to run the original module with 5th Edition rules and provides reference sheets for encounters.

To use this conversion guide you will need a copy of "B9 Castle Caldwell and Beyond", originally available in hard-copy and now for sale in Digital format at DMsGuild.com.

"Classic Modules Today: B4 The Lost City" contains the OpenOffice/LibreOffice source files used to create this PDF. Visit Classicmodulestoday.com for instructions on creating your own classic module conversions and selling them on the DMs Guild.

A Note from the Conversion Author

Why Redux?

In short, the mini-adventures in this module are not great, particularly the first two. There's little rhyme or reason to the placement of foes and no backstory to breathe some life into the first two adventures.

Because of this, I took a different tack with this conversion. This is NOT a direct conversion of the original product, like my other Classic Modules Today offerings. Instead, I've done what I can to salvage these scenarios. The other three scenarios have also been tweaked in an effort to give this conversion, and by extension the original module, some usefulness. I hope you find the results better than the original. Thank you.

Well why bother if you don't like the module? Many buying it are interested in the original adventure and that is the point. :/ I will convert myself and use some of the ideas from this.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
