CAN YOU SURVIVE WATERDEEP'S MOST INFAMOUS DEATHTRAP?

Blue Alley lies hidden in the heart of Waterdeep. Built by a secretive wizard, it is a magic maze full of tricks, traps, strange monsters, and rich treasure. Countless adventurers have ventured inside to test their bravery and skill, yet few have returned. And now it is your turn…

Blue Alley is a 3-4 hour Dungeons & Dragons adventure for characters of 1st to 4th level. It expands upon the material presented in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, but can be played on its own or as part of any D&D campaign.

This product is a DMs Guild Adepts adventure! The Dungeon Masters Guild Adept program brings highly talented individuals together for creative development. Guild Adept products are identified with the golden ampersand and logo.

This adventure is Adventurers League legal and uses the code DDHC-WDH-03.

Stretch goals:

  • If this product earns Electrum metal status, we will add an all-new, high-resolution map. Unlocked!
  • If this product earns Gold metal status, we will add a Fantasy Grounds version! Unlocked!

Hi, is this adventure apt for running as TotM?

after reading the comments to research my answer I came to the observation that the guest book is a one way entry and can be re-entered as often as needed by signing again, but not exited through. That leaves the gates of paradise as the only exit at #22. However, that room description mentions pass or fail the pc leaves everything behind but their bare behind. how do the pc's get the unicorn out? or does the gate gem offer the only way to exit with gear intact? or is there another exit I am missing?

Hi Kelly, yes, you need the gateway gem to get out at exit #22 with your gear

Just wanted to say that I really appreciate you including the FG version into this, instead of creating a separately purchased product of it. Thank you!

Is there a Roll20 compatible version of the maps?

Roll20 has a max load size (at Plus or above) of 10MB, and this file is 110MB (10X). I've bought Blue Alley, but didn't realize the maps couldn't be used given their size, making the adventure effectively useless for my 100% virtual game (unless I somehow create my own maps).

Any ideas would be really helpful as I and the party were looking forward to this adventure.

Jeff in the comments created a map for Roll 20. Here is the link: https://www.reddit.com/r/AdventurersLeague/comments/hwynyc/map_for_ddhcwdh03_blue_alley/

I really like this adventure I have read through it multiple times and look forward to playing this adventure this upcoming week. I am currently playing on roll20 and I have tried everything that I know to get the high res player map with the grid to align with the grid on roll20 but I have just had no luck. If there is any help that you could provide with that it would be much appreciated! Love the adventure.

Thanks for the kind words, Garrett. I'm afraid I don't use Roll20, so I can't be much help. Do the files inside the .mod package help at all?

I haven't got the program to open up .mod packages. Ive cropped the photo and resized it a couple of times so that the map is just big enough so that the edge of the player grid lines up with rooms 6, 16, and 26 and set the width and height to 42x58 and it worked alright for my game last week. the map squares between the outside and center of the map are off the player grid by a quarter of a square, to a half square but its working alright spatially for combat. Regardless actually playing the adventure is more fun than I thought it was going to be. 5/5 stars (Or all the stars really, very happy with the purchase)

if the map already has a grid, is easier to just remove the roll20 page grid

hope this helps you and is not too late

How do you reveal the map to your players as you go along? Do you generally cover up the grids they don't know yet and then reveal as they make decisions or would you just give them the map?
Customer avatar
M.T. B December 01, 2020 7:01 pm UTC

I would recommend revealing as you go

I'm about to run this with my group and I have a couple of clarification questions regarding the guest book.
1. What exactly is the significance of the crossed out names. Are they NPCs that were killed inside Blue Alley? 2. Hypothetically if the players leave Blue Alley and try to get back inside (like if they end up in area 28), will they be able to sign the guest book again and get back in? 3. If the players were to succeed in completing the objectives and then reenter the alley in like a month what kinds of changes could there be? In other words, is it possible you'll write a tier II version in the future?

Hi Mallory,

1. Yes, the implication is that these are folk who died.

2. Yes.

3. We'd love to write a sequel one day, though no solid plans atm

Thank you! One more question. In room 20, with the statue, what is the purpose of the phrase on the wall (utter madness. PURE RUBBISH), and for that matter the vials on the floor? I feel like it's supposed to be a hint or a pun or something and I'm missing it. Thanks.

The rubbish hints at the fact that the boggles (who clean up rubbish) might be summoned here. The vials are just random debris.

What is the light situation in the Blue Alley? Dark, dim light from above sky in corridors only, rooms dark, magically lit, or something else?

Good question - we should have mentioned that. The alley itself is dependant on natural light, while the rooms all have bronze sconces fitted with everburning candles.

I can't find a reference to "animated sword" found in room 7 in DNDBeyond. Did you mean flying sword? If so this seems rather weak, CR 1/4 given that most of the other monsters are much stronger. Am I missing something?

Ah, you are right. It should be a flying sword. We will fix it when our layout person gets some free time.

In the text, the sword has some buffs that make it a bit more of a threat than a regular flying sword. But its not intended to be a terribly difficult fight

Hey I just picked this up and I'm really excited to run it as my first DM. My audience is 3-4 people who have never played DnD but they like escape room board games, so I think this will be a perfect intro.

My plan is to build fun characters for them to play and then let them randomly choose. What would your advise be for classes that would be useful in this dungeon. First impressions would be that a rogue would be handy. What else? Also, should I jump them to lvl2 or higher to make it more forgiving for newbies?

Thanks in advance!

Typical party is fine, so add a spell caster and a tank. Level 2 or 3 is probably the sweet spot but any tier 1 will do

This is so wonderful. My party has gotten bored with dungeon crawls and love puzzles. Thank you SO MUCH.

Also— can anyone recommend other puzzle heavy adventures like this?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
