5 stars from DM Dango!

DM Dango reviews MLN on his YouTube channel - https://bit.ly/2zo4wkV - copy and paste the link into a new window.

Welcome

to Mordenkainen’s Lost Notebook! Nobody, not even he, knows exactly how it got lost. But lost it got, and remained lost in Barovia until it ended up among the possessions of the warlock Amira Metanova. At least that’s what Ashley Warren, gifted writer and Guild Adept, told us when we started kicking around ideas for a book of spells and magic items. And since Amira is Ashley’s character, who are we to judge?

In any case, here is the result of hundreds of hours of creativity and research. Each piece of information is carefully crafted to bring more enjoyment to your D&D game. We used every caution in balancing the mechanical content, and we hope you agree we succeeded. Most of the spells and magic items are taken from sourcebooks from previous editions of D&D, but many of them are brand new, fresh from the fevered brains of the creative team behind this book.

Speaking of which, that team is comprised of some of the brightest talent creating content for the DM’s Guild. It was a pleasure and an honor to work with them.

Enjoy!

R P Davis

Any chance of adding the Artificer's spell list?

For the adamantine wings spell, do you make your attacks using the wings with Strength, Dex, or your spellcasting ability score? Are the attacks considered finesse or light? Do they add any of the relevant ability scores to damage? I presume no on the last question, but I wanted to make sure.

Hello, Ismael! R P Davis here, project lead. Sorry that wasn't called out specifically! Ultimately, it's up to individual DMs to make those calls. Personally, I'd use the spellcasting ability modifier and apply the modifier to damage.

The note tucked within the spell Charge (p.13) actually belongs in Choking Cobwebs on the next page.

Luminous Swarm and Prickling Torment each have a duration of "5 turns", which has no meaning as a duration in 5e (or any edition since 2e AD&D). The original 3.5 Edition source has a duration of 5 rounds, which is unusual in 5e. Given how these spells are supposed to stack with other spells, a duration of 1 minute (10 rounds) is probably more appropriate.

The name of the spell Conjure Maker (pg. 15) seems fairly odd since it conjures a giant worm. It seems to have based on the spell Great Worm of the Earth from the 3.5e Complete Mage. Is the name a misprint?

Hello, Thomas!

Well spotted. It is indeed a conversion of that spell. The name is a Dune joke. =)

First: I borrowed this from a friend and took a look. This is really excellent! I will purchase it at my next opportunity!
My only criticism is that I think some spells are in the wrong school (e.g. I don't see why Distraction is an evocation rather than an enchantment, the Trusted Bloodhound should be a conjuration, etc.; I can provide more examples if you want).
Second: What system are you using for the magic item construction rules?

Some of the spells are not very well balanced is my only complaint. Elsewise this is a great addition! I was happy when one of my players showed me his copy until I read the details on some of the spells.

For instance "Vecna's malevelont whispers" is only a 4th level spell yet could effectively reduce the HP of a 546HP Ancient Red Dragon without any saving throws or anything, which is undeniably BS for a spell a level 7 character could have. In many instances it is even better than Power Word Kill, which would activate when the same dragon had only 1/5 of its hit-points. I don't see any real argument why this spell could be balanced as written.

Likewise but to a more minor degree "Endless Slumber" Is a incredible alternative to Feeble mind, where it has the same effect but effectively instantly kills something for one failed save. this would be okay it instead it read "every time the target takes damage it can make another saving throw" or "Unwilling...See more

Not to criticise but Page 32 features a duplicate note from Mordenkainen within the description of the spells 'Painful Echoes' and 'Phantasmal Strangler'.

Hello, Charles! R P Davis here. Unfortunately, we have no ability at present to offer PoD. We have the files, but the archmages which control the Guild have decreed that PoD is unavailable until further notice. Do keep watching, though, because as soon as it's available we're going to do it! =)

Does it look like the PoD option will be coming back anytime soon? I’m really awaiting a print copy.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is we're in line for PoD. The bad news is we're in line for PoD. =D The Guild artificers have the files; it's just a matter of getting the book proofed and approved.

TL;DR: Just around the corner, I hope! =)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
