Want to travel in a world where the fall of the dice can make things appear randomly? Get completely lost in this book with multiple quests and worlds of your choosing, without a DM. This book could even help you worldbuild for your very own campaign.

Scott Niedjela

Now released: The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox Part Two: The Toolbox Expanded!

Sick of not being able to find a game? Have a burning passion for D&D and everything it represents, but no way to indulge that passion in actual gameplay?

5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Solo Adventurer’s Toolbox. This book is the result of many months’ work and represents a complete system for generating on-the-fly, detailed, immersive solo adventures.  And by solo, we mean true solo, without a dungeon master.

The Fantasy Grounds version is now available here!

Using this system, paired with 5e mechanics, you can guide your PC or PCs solo through any adventure environment, creating meaningful adventures for them as they journey in the Forgotten Realms (or a campaign setting of your choice).

The Solo Adventurer’s Toolbox covers a variety of topics including quest generation, random encounter generation, random dungeon generation, random wilderness exploration, discovering settlements, merchants and shopping, downtime activities, random NPC generation, and systems for generating infinite monster encounters all tailored towards the solo PC.

In addition to being a go-to for solo D&D gamers, it also happens to be an excellent tool for DMs as well. The breadth of tables makes it an invaluable tool for brainstorming adventure ideas. This book, paired with your creativity, will enable you to create endless adventures for your weekly game, possibly as you guide your own PC or PCs through them. This is a one-of-a-kind product.

LIST OF CHAPTERS

Chapter 1: Introduction and Overview of Chapters

Chapter 2: We examine the Question / Answer Mechanic that I have created for use with the resources in this book. This simple system allows you to gain answers to any question in the same way as a system like Mythic GM Emulator, but far more stripped down.

Chapter 3: Deals with travel, modes of travel, weather, camping, unmarked settlements and the like. A more detailed system for wilderness exploration is outlined in Chapter 9.

Chapter 4: Wilderness encounters. In this chapter, you will find a d100 table of random wilderness encounters, all with an open-ended nature so that they can be interpreted differently every time. You can use these, or you may choose to use the encounter generation tools in Chapter 14.

Chapter 5: The same as above, but for urban settings.

Chapter 6: The same as above, but for dungeon settings.

Chapter 7: Contains tools for generating quests for your solo PC or PCs.

Chapter 8: Contains tables for the random generation of dungeons and their contents.

Chapter 9: Contains tables for the random generation of wilderness terrain and its contents.

Chapter 10: Contains guidance on merchants and shopping while in settlements.

Chapter 11: Contains guidance on downtime activities for your solo PC.

Chapter 12: Contains some ideas about roleplay in the solo format.

Chapter 13: Tables for the random generation of any number of NPCs you might meet on your travels.

Chapter 14: A collection of tables designed to generate an infinite number of random encounters in any environment, and also answer detailed questions framed by the player.

Chapter 15: A slightly experimental chapter dealing with monster tactics.

Chapter 16: Contains tables to generate monster encounters, with difficulty adjusted for the solo PC. Tables are arranged by environment type and CR.

Chapter 17: Loot tables, Individual and Hoard, arranged by CR.

Chapter 18: An example of solo gameplay using this system.

The biggest plus is having all the tools you need to solo in one place. I've used a lot of system-agnostic GM-less tools and they tend to require a fair amount of additional supplementation to cover all the bases… The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox provides a complete system for playing 5e without a DM and a powerful tool for generating encounters, quests, NPC's and places of interest. Easily customisable to fit your game-world and level of desired complexity, with a consistent format that makes modifying the tables to fit your personal preference a breeze. This toolbox is an all-in-one gift to Solo Players!

Jay Davies

Essential for any DM, even if you have no interest in solo adventuring whatsoever! The breadth of tables and ideas presented in this document warrant the price of admission alone!

Aaron F.

The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox contains a plethora of resources to create adventures, worlds, and random encounters and events to fill your D&D sessions. It's a great resource for solo adventurers, but it's also a wonderful inspiration for DMs to create interesting and unique adventures for their players.

Kristina Chun

Imaginative and wide-reaching... I had problems taking breaks from solo-ing to play with friends!

John Todsen

I couldn't wait to get started on my personal campaign. I'm using a journal to keep myself honest and to keep for worldbuilding notes.

Josh Law from StrMod

Nice for a player. A must for a DM.

Patrick Higingbotham, NonZero Sum Games

What impressed me the most was seeing the question I had answered come to life. In solo play we can reach a level of detail that is very intuitive, rivalling even a group setting.

Timothy Arthur

All in all, this book is a must-have for those looking to explore the concept of solo play with D&D, within any campaign setting.

Hello Paul. Loving this product. After running an adventure generated via the Solo Adventure's Toolbox, i like to finalize the resulting dungeon map. This scratches my map drawing itch and provides a means of remembering the quest/dungeon. Below are links to my latest.

Hello Paul, I have 2 questions about the Solo Toolbox. What is a CR? In your source section you name MM. Is this Monster Manual? My Monster Manual's ISBN: 978-0-7869-4852-9. Are you using another? I ask because some of your references go to pages in the 300's. Mine ends at page 287.

Hi Wilfred. A CR is a challenge rating, which is 5e's way of classifying how powerful monsters are. Regarding Monster Manual, yes MM is Monster Manual. I also reference MME - Monster Manual Expanded, which is a product on DM's Guild that contains a whole trove of extra monsters.

Hi Wilfred, your ISBN is the 4e MM. The 5e MM has ISBN: 978-0-7869-6561-8 and goes to page 352.

This is for a newer edition of the game (5e) released round about 2014.

Hi Paul!

I just wanted to say that I LOVE your Solo Adventurer's Toolbox. It's especially great when I'm playing with my 10yo daughter and she wants to run the game, but doesn't exactly know what to do next.

As seems to always be the case with me and all things tabletop, your toolbox quickly led me to coding. I assembled a little tool that quickly spits out Dungeon, Wilderness, and City events using your tables along with some other general tools like Yes/No, Stat check, and dice. It's written in a narrative scripting language called Ink that I've used a lot for other game dev purposes. You can check it out here:
https://fantabulous-tech.github.io/solo-adventurers-toolbox/

I'm happy to keep it private and for personal use if you like, but I'm also happy to share it if you think others would benefit from it. I'm also open to collaborating and expanding on this or other interactive tools! I'd love to know what you think.

Either way, thanks again for the wonderful...See more

Wow! Love the job you did there. I'd prefer it if you kept it private to be honest Brian as it represents a huge chunk of work for me (two years of my life) and I'm not really of the mindset to just give away the material. But thank you for sharing, and for the support, and I'm glad you're getting use out of it!

Hi. Is there a Print On Demand (POD) option for this book?
Customer avatar
5E Solo G November 03, 2020 5:17 pm UTC
CREATOR
No POD I'm afraid. DM's Guild must approach you if you wish to do POD on a product. I did provide POD for one of my products early on (The Death Knight's Squire) but the process of getting it to POD was so complex and arduous that it totally put me off. It basically threw back my writing schedule by a year. However, I grant full permission to print off any of my products at your local print shop! I see you asked the same question regarding Solo Investigator's Handbook, and same applies there. Thanks for the support Duncan!

First off: love the book. Have had it for a bit, and there's so many juicy tidbits in here, especially the Monster Tactics.
Just ran into a small error: on the wilderness encounters table, there is no 10. It jumps from 9 to 11-15.

Is it possible to get a pdf of just the tables? I don't mind flipping back and forth through the bookmarks but I like to play without needing a computer. Be cool to have something I can just print off and throw into my solo binder.

You should be able to find most of what you need online. The SRD will give you most stat blocks for monsters.

Hi, Paul,
great book and resource, I really enjoy designing and playing solo adventures with it!

I do have one question: in chapter 8, page 41, you reference "Kent David Kelly’s excellent Random Dungeon Room Generator, available on Dungeon Master’s Guild, is a great tool for this also and consists of an excel spreadsheet. Every time you hit the “calculate” button, it provides you with a new room description."
However, the book in question appears to be a resource for naming dungeon rooms, rather than for creating them. And there is also no excel file associated with it. Did you have another book in mind, or am I missing something? Thanks!

so how would you do puzzles in a solo format like it would seem hard because how would you do it, just pick and and go with it even if it doesn't make sense or understand the puzzle and ruin the puzzling part of it?
Thanks

"Monster Encounters for the Solo NPC" section only goes up to level 15. What gives?

Even says "a small supplement will be released in future covering the remaining levels." This never happened. It's been a year and a half since last update, too. That's a quarter of the levels missing. Extremely irritating. Please find the time to release a supplement for solo CR levels, or update the main product.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
