THE PRESS OF WATERDEEP

This folio of game handouts provides the front pages of 13 newspapers, broadsheets and scandal rags found in the City of Splendors. As handouts, they serve as table props and boost the game atmosphere for your sessions. The stories and headlines on these pages can provide adventure ideas that can take place alongside Waterdeep Dragon Heist.

Let Volo be your guide:

Volothamp Geddarm -- Waterdeep's erstwhile narrator -- is your guide to the ins and outs of the publishing business, the low-down on the owners, editors and rivals involved in Waterdeep's most popular and influencial publications.

Reporters at the DM's fingertips

A chart allows a DM to randomly roll up reporters and correspondents that can be used as NPCs in your game.

Maps

One map shows the layout of a typical newspaper office in Waterdeep. A city map shows the locations of the publications mentioned in this product.

About the author:
Troy E. Taylor has been writing and editing for roleplaying games since 2005. His publishing credits include Dragon magazine, Kobold Press and Engine Publishing. Since 2008 he has been a regular contributor to the multi-Ennie winning GM advice site, Gnome Stew.

This is an awesome resource. The interior art perfectly compliments the content, which overall provides a deep dive into a niche of the Waterdeep environment which most DMs won't have time to embellish. A perfect specimen of a useful game supplement, well worth the price.

Small typo, in "silverhand's tax policies are sinking ships" it says "milktoast Masked Lords". That should probably be milquetoast

All typos are intentional. You've read the bio section on these Waterdeep "editors", right? ;)

Just kidding. Thanks for noticing.

If the master file still exists, I'll make the change. Much was lost when Elturel (and my last PC) got sucked into Avernus, I'm afraid.

Would it be possible to get a version that is not set in Waterdeep. I m pretty much running Dragonheist in a home brew world and would love to use your stuff but it only needs the name changed of the city basically.

A helpful product.

One thing I'd really like to see is a larger map of the newspaper office. I'm planning on putting together a short "heist" where the party has to infiltrate the office, and it would be nice if I had this map as an 8.5x11 that I could hand out tot he players.

I don't know if you can make the map hold its resolution that size, but here is the link to the source material. It is a free download here on the guild. https://www.dmsguild.com/product/216205/DMs-Guild-Creator-Resource--Maps-Art-2?filters=0_0_45476_0_0_0_0_0

Would it be okay if I referenced your document for a Waterdeep "Running a Business" doc? I'd summarize each paper in a single sentence based on your descriptions, and have a link to this page. Thank you.

This is great (****), I would love (*****) if I could also create news myself via a template, then I can interject story hooks and leads to my own campaign. Via a template of a newspaper.

I like all of the stuff in this - will stop me doing a lot of double up on my own prep. The one thing I think would add to it would be to add templates for the various newssheets - to make it easier to make up my own versions, to reference things that have happened in my game.

That's an interesting idea, at least to explore. It includes a couple of hurdles: embedding fonts is the first, something I presently have no expertise; the second is whether a template created with the application I use for document creation has universal utility; my understanding is that it does not.

Pages templates would be handy for those of us on Macs (like me). Unfortunately, Pages doesn't embed fonts, but even just the layout would be handy to have.

I can see there is a template in there for the Dock Ward Dispatch (a fine broadsheet if ever I've perused one). Is there any way to learn which fonts you used on the originals?

I'd be pushing luck here too, but templates for the other broadsheets is something I'd purchase if you produced. If fonts aren't able to be embedded, a list would suffice.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
