The Spectrum of Magic...

UPDATED: Now includes information for the Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica

...consists of 5 colors, each representing a different philosophy that shapes the effect of its spells. This book presents an alternative alignment system to the classic Good vs Evil and Law vs Chaos paradigm that may govern magic infused worlds outside of the normal D&D multiverse. Instead of aligning themselves along these two axes, beings are aligned to one or more of the five colors of magic: Black, Blue, Green, Red, and White. This book offers the following features:

  • A section detailing the individual philosophies, values and vices of each of the five colors, as well as how they interact with each other, both among multiple individuals of different alignments, as well as in beings aligned to multiple colors at once and where the Guilds of Ravnica fall into the spectrum.
  • Guidelines for choosing spells that suit the theme of your spellcasting character’s alignment. This includes extensive lists of all official spells sorted by colors, both generally and by class.
  • Additionally, this section offers an optional system that limits characters to using only the spells corresponding to their alignment in exchange for bonuses to their spellcasting to mitigate the more limited spell list.
  • A guide that helps DMs and Players setting their monsters and characters in a world governed by the 5 colors of magic. This includes an exhaustive list of existing player races and monsters from official publications, including the Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica, and which colors they are naturally associated with and typically align with.
  • 8 new monsters that are typical creatures representing each of the five colors, as well as some multi-color combinations, and serve as examples for how color alignments may look in a stat block.

With the soon-to-be-release of Guidemasters Guide to Ravnica (D&D 5e's version of M:tg), this publication goes a long way to possibly filling in gaps that many of us see the 5e version not going far enough to fill. The one area of concern is [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
