Gunslinger, Revised

Matt Mercer’s gunslinger is a flavorful class that became one of the more popular unofficial subclasses for its interesting design. When one of my players asked if they could play a gunslinger, my initial answer was yes, though I always look over unofficial content that will come up in my game. To my regret, I saw that the class wouldn’t function well with the game’s pacing, potential locations where resources would be scarce, and the needs of the other players.

I really wanted to make this class more accessible to more tables. To that end, I reworked the subclass to have greater versatility within a campaign, be more balanced against the other fighter subclasses, and adhere more to 5e design principles without taking away the flavor. Below is a summary of changes:

  • Firearm crafting is done by level milestone instead of situational wealth and time. You choose a firearm at 3rd level and upgrade it or create new ones at certain levels.

  • The subclass follows the example of the battlemaster, using a predetermined number of grit points rather than bringing in the need for extra ability scores.

  • Replaced Quickdraw with magical weapon attacks since you probably won’t find magic guns in the environment. Magic weapons are a prerequisite for martial classes at higher levels since many monsters have resistance or immunity to physical damage.

  • Replaced the 18th-level ability with renewed grit usage every combat. This subclass already has powerful options for firearm crafting at 18th level, so it’s not quite as powerful as other capstone features.

  • Revised the trick shots to all be useful but also of the same power level as the other fighter subclasses per use..

You took away all of its punch and made it one of those "If you don't have blank when the fight starts, you get blank." classes. How did the extra crit chance and bleed damage of the lvl 18 skills not fit in every campaign? [...]

The alterations here fit well with the existing 5e designs, the layout of the supplement makes everything easy to read and understand, and so far everything seems balanced. I really dig this kind of supplement, especially since it's pay what you want! [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
