Mordenkainen's Musings: Nature & Nurture in the Multiverse

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Have you ever wanted to play a race and class combination that seemed fun, but decided not to because you wouldn't get a 16 or better in your primary ability score? If so, then this supplement is for you!

We are also tired of seeing your class dictate your fantasy race. We have rectified this prolem by hacking the 5E ruleset. By adapting a rule from 13th Age, now you will get an ability score from your race and your class

This document instructs how to adapt all races and classes from the following books1

  • Player's Handbook
  • Elemental Evil Player's Companion
  • Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide
  • Volo's Guide to Monsters
  • Tortle Package
  • Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes
  • Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron
  • Updated 5/5/19: Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica
It also provides you with recommendations on how to adapt the rule to settings that aren't on the DM's Guild!
"I'm starting several new campaigns: one for experienced players and the other for brand new players. In both cases I'll be following your ASI rules. I've always been bummed by the weird racial rules of D&D, but I'm thinking this is the way to go and I hope WotC follows suit..."

Enjoying the supplement, and plan on using it in conjunction with Ancestry/Culture for other race abilities in my campaign.

Once question about the Variant Human. Can you provide a clearer explanation of this statement: "Instead of selecting a feat of your choice, you may instead select an ability score increase based upon your class at 1st level."

So if I'm playing a variant human fighter, I get +1 to any 2 ability scores of my choice, an extra skill proficiency, and ... another +1 to Str or Con because of my class? Can these stack with my human racial bonus?

Joe,

Thanks for the kind words! (As a note, Matt and I would use the term "ancestry" if we were writing this now. I'm going to use that substitute term for the remainder of the comment.) I'll give you the strict reading first, and then my unsolicited opinion.

STRICT READING

By a strict reading of the rule, the variant human fighter who chose an ASI instead of the bonus feat would have:

By Ancestry: +1 to two ability scores of your choice, provided that the bonus doesn't overlap with the bonus from class; and
By Class: Either +2 to Strength or Constitution, or +1 to both Strength and Constitution.

For example, you could have (1) +2 Strength and +1 to two other ability scores, (2) +2 Constitution and +1 to two other ability scores, or (3) +1 to Strength, Constitution and two other ability scores.

At the time we wrote this, I believe we considered allowing bonus stacking for ancestry and class for variant humans like...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
