"Very useful selection of ready-made NPCs, well organized and beautifully laid out! Grab a copy!" -Travis Legge, head of Aegis Studios

"I don’t know of a clever way to ease into this so I’ll just put it bluntly: this is an amazing accessory! ... It is gorgeous, functional and useful... Grab a copy so you can say you helped this thing go Platinum. It's gonna." -NonZero Sum Games

35 Versatile NPCs, a Gold bestselling collection of useful NPC stat blocks, is back with a sequel to blow away the original. Find the right NPC for any situation!

Now availible for Fantasy Grounds! - Find it here

What’s New?

Versatile NPCs II contains nearly twice as many NPCs as the original. Most of the 60+ polished and playtested NPCs make their debut in Versatile NPCs II, while others are extensively revised NPCs from the original.

Take a look at the table of contents to see the variety of customizable NPCs that fill the thematic and CR gaps left from the Monster Manual and Volo’s Guide to Monsters.

Included in the purchase is a printer-friendly PDF of all the stat blocks.

Many wonderful and generous people within and without the community have helped with this project. Their contributions are listed on the credits page.

The "full" version seems to be missing a few NPCs from the "Printer Friendly" version like the Brawler. I didn't go line by line, but that's one of my favorites from your first set, so I noticed it's absence when I opened the file.

A couple of the ones got left in the printer-friendly version, but ultimately didn't make it into the final for various reasons including layout, editing, artwork, balance, and other resources, though I am glad you like what you found in the printer-friendly version

Seems to be some minor printing errors for the Printer Friendly edition. The table of contents doesn't have the CR listed like the regular version, also page 5 is completely blank except for the footer and page number.

It's pratically a must have if you like to use npcs as opponents, since the official npc statistics leave a huge gap between low level and incredibly high level enemies.

On the Defender, Elite. The CR rating in the table of contents reads CR 17, but the stat block shows CR 7. Which is correct?

Looks great, picked this up after hearing about it on Crit Academy. Filling in the gaps in the CR ratings is very handy indeed.

For the Horizon Walker, the distant strike ability reads: "When the walker takes the
Attack action, it can teleport up to 15 before an attack to
an unoccupied space it can see..."

15 what?

For the Legendary Mage, it seems like the text got cut off beneath it's stat block. It reads "damage die for a spell it cast, it can reroll the die and must use the new roll." Did the first part of this ability get cut off?

You are correct. I have updated the files now to have the correct text, which should read: "Optimal Channeling. When the mage rolls a 1 or a 2 on a damage die for a spell it cast, it can reroll the die and must use the new roll."

Left a review. The book is excellent.
That said:

- I wish all the NPCs from the first booklet were included too. Please do so in an update? Even if you don't re-balance their stats and add new art, it would be easier to have them all in one booklet.

- There's a Typo on the Brute's Challenge Rating.

- Personally I will tinker around these NPCs. It is VERY EASY to do so.
Example: 171 hp for the CR19 archmage? Nah... If I use one, I'll drop it by 60 hp, and add an arcane ward or something that absorbs 20 hp per round. Evil dude? A ward that channels the lifeforce of captured victims, draining them. Good dude? An abjurer-like one that replenishes every time he casts a spell. Both effectively the same as 171 hp.

Just the basic rules! No special books. As with the NPC stat blocks Monster Manual, the Dungeon Master's Guide can make it easier to add racial modifiers to the stat blocks (as explained in the introduction), and Xanathar's Guide to Everything offers some new spell options. However, the books are completely optional.

Thank you for the quick reply. However, in the previous book there were some "artificiers" and a magic gun that dealt thunder damage. Actually I can make use of those as the spells are common and the stat block enough, but it made me a bit concerned.

The artificer is inspired by the Unearthed Arcana article, which I'll link below. However, the article is NOT required to use the artificer. The artificer gunsmith has an attack option for its "Thundergun," which may be what you're referring to, but all the information to necessary to adjudicating the attack in-game is in the stat block. All the abilities for the artificer are standalone, provided you have the basic rules.

The bastion eventually became the elite defender. It has gone through a lot of mechanical tweaking, making it a distinctly different NPC. However, it fills the same thematic and battlefield role.

Love these! One minor edit:
p.68 Storm Herald's aura doesn't have a duration. 1 minute assumed?

Large amount of content and fun visuals make this collection of new NPCs and stats very good.

With many NPC types along with background, pictures, stats and actions, this product is well worth the money and eliminates hassle of creating your own stats and moves for common and uncommon NPCs of many types

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
