The Code Duello

Rules for Duels, Contests, and Competitions

It is sometimes said that honor is the only thing that divides community and chaos. While oftentimes adventurers live outside of the system, other times the system calls upon them. Angering powerful nobles, magi, and other beings has its cost, after all. Will you be an honorable hero, engaging in duels and trials to test your mettle for respect and glory? Or will you game the system, bending or even breaking its rules to meet your aims?

Add a wide variety of lore and rules for one-on-one combat and other trials with this supplement, designed to expand your game's options when competing or settling disputes with others of similar profession, humanoids in general, or stranger beings. Enclosed are rules for everything from wrestling matches, jousting, and samurai-style showdowns to mageduels, concerts, and even the strange rites of warlock patrons. It includes a few duel-related magic items and a feat as well.

Rating and reviewing is much appreciated! And don't forget to check out my other title on DM's Guild, "Cogs in the Great Machine", a menagerie of Modron material!

Hi there!

First of all, I love everything in this.

The rules are simple, easy to understand (mostly but we'll get to that) and I haven't seen anything I didn't immediately start plotting to use whilst cackling.

The aforementioned mostly is in response to the eidolon rules.

The AC simply says "8 + (Spellcasting mod + defence)" but doesn't specify what defence is.

The same with the offence for damage.

In addition - Conjuration says the eidolon gains an additional weapon, does this mean a second attack?

And the evocation property - is it referring to the channel action and does it mean all the channel damage dice become d12's?

Thank you :)

Aha, thanks! The Eidolons were definitely one of the more fiddly bits.

- For Defense and Offense, it is meant to be the level of the spell you've put into their weapons and armor (in step 2, just above the Eidolon statblock). However I can see that I didn't put as much attention on that as I meant to - I'll fix this soon by bolding and capitalizing those words in step 2 so it is much more obvious!

- Conjuration should've specified they can use the second weapon as a bonus action, whoops - I guess it fell off during one of the revisions.

- Yes, that's exactly what it means! I added in the names like "Channel" later on for more clarity, and managed to forget to change it there to match.

I'll fix all that and thanks so much for the feedback! Should be a new version up by tomorrow.

I am a little confused on the Caber toss rules, if you role under 10 DC the caber does not flip over, I get that, but if you role over it does, but how far does it go, etc, or does that distance not matter and it's just the highest role over the DC of 10 is the winner?

Thanks for the input! The DC 10 "flip rule" was intended to be a reflection of how the caber toss works in real life - tossing something as massive and awkward as a caber requires as much coordination as strength sometimes, and sometimes multiple people fail and they needed some way of still scoring the ones that don't go end over end. For the rules in this supplement, your points are all based on the attack roll directly (plus 5 if you were crazy enough to try for long distance!), but I wanted a mention of when it doesn't "flip" in the rules, for people to visualize it more easily. (In most real world caber toss competitions, the distance doesn't matter at all, only the angle it falls - the straighter the better.)

I'll try to think of a better way to word that so the scoring is more clear!

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
