Soul Survivor (one shot adventure)

Suggested Price $1.00

The party must race against a Demon Lord to recover the three fragments of a friend's soul, on a journey that takes them to the far reaches of the Turnback Mountains and beyond.

Designed for characters of 7th to 12th level, Soul Survivor can be played as a standalone one shot adventure, or as the second in a four part series of connected one shots that see the party fight their way to hell and back.

Author's note: this is a bridging adventure, with some relatively straightforward encounters and puzzles that can be tailored to suit most party compositions.  The adventure also can be added as an adventure hook to introduce a cursed companion subplot or set of prophecies into a larger campaign.  Also, if you like it, don't forget to rate it; if you don't like it, drop me an email and let me know what can be improved.

A tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing! - William Shakespeare.

The module has four encounters, mostly with a single opponent, and no time allowed for a Long Rest, so it is an exercise in resource management. There are some puzzles/possible explorations, but they should not hold up the action for too long. It is designed as a one-shot, so perhaps between four and six hours, depending on how decisive your party members are.

Hello! First review, woohoo! One thing I immediately noticed is that it says in the beginning of this adventure Askelon is casting Astral Projection every night. I looked in the appendix and didn't see a stat block for him, so I went to the Into the Abyss adventure which I also downloaded, and he only has 5th level spells... How is he casting Astral Projection every night if he can only cast 5th level spells? Just a thought.

Also, the call to action in the beginning involves a pretty significant hand-wave. Askelon is trapped in a flaming cage that cannot be dispelled and doesn't appear to be any named spell in the game. Also, the party is paralyzed by Abraxas and can't move or speak, again with no in-game mechanical way of achieving this. I understand sometimes as DM's we have to put things on rails a BIT, but paralyzing the entire party without a save or any sort of mechanics by way of the game seems a bit heavy handed. Maybe he casts Time Stop and encloses them in a Wall of Force? Or a forcecage?...See more

Hi Seth -

Thanks for your feedback, and hope you enjoy the adventure. Let me know how you go. You know, I never noticed that Astral Projection was above Askelon's spell level! Obeying the rules isn't always my strong suit as an author.

On that same point, I'm also often guilty of forcing the players to sit through exposition whether they like it or not, especially if it's an adventure designed to be a one-shot. On the other hand, Abraxas is a Demon Lord who knows every conceivable spell, so I figure he can come up with a combination of spells like the ones you cleverly suggested to achieve his ends.

I'm afraid Part 4, Into The Abyss, plays out even more like a novel than an open world, mainly to keep it within a one-shot timeframe, so perhaps you'll want to modify that one a lot or avoid it altogether. Hopefully Part 3 makes up for this by being more of a sandbox for them.

Cheers
Alan

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
