Announcing Grimlore's Grimoire; a 53-page tome of knowledge that contains 214 new spells for DMs and players, balanced for the D&D 5th Edition ruleset!

What kind of a supplement is this?

This supplement has been created as a passion project and released freely to the D&D community as a Pay What You Want title! I've been a DM for years, and with the help of my players, together we have created tonnes of homebrew content. I've decided to take a massive list of homebrew spells that we've used over the years, trim the quirky ones and balance the rest, leaving this book containing 214 new spells covering all spell levels; Cantrips to 9th level.

What are you waiting for? Give your players some new spell options for their characters to employ... or maybe you should teach some of Grimlore's spells to your NPCs! Spice up your encounters with some incantations that will be foreign to your players!

Contents:

  • 214 new unique spells balanced for 5th edition,
    • 40 - Cantrips
    • 35 - 1st level spells
    • 30 - 2nd level spells
    • 29 - 3rd level spells
    • 22 - 4th level spells
    • 22 - 5th level spells
    • 18 - 6th level spells
    • 7 - 7th level spells
    • 7 - 8th level spells
    • 4 - 9th level spells
  • Spells listed alphabetically by level and indicating which classes get each spell,
  • A dedication from the tome's author; the deathless Pale Master Grimlore, wishing those who find this tome good luck on their adventures,
  • Notes and art included throughout the tome for readers to obtain some insight into the author's thought process,
  • An additional printer-friendly version of the PDF.

As always, I encourage you to post discussion questions in the comment section below, or feel free to join the Grimlore Entertainment community discord server: https://discord.gg/N7MM93a (copy and paste the URL into your browser)

Custom 5e D&D classes with these spells!

I have created three new classes for 5th Edition D&D; the Deathseer, the Pale Master, and the Vicar, with each being enhanced by the spells found within Grimlore's Grimoire. If you enjoy these spells, I recommend checking them out by clicking the images below!

Hey, first of all, love this content. I have recently implemented much of it in my game. There is one spell that confuses me however, Shadow Bind. It says upon a hit, it does 2d6 necrotic damage and grapples them. Is this spell meant to be concentration if it imposes an effect like grapple? And if it is, can you continue to inflict damage each turn as the shadow "grapples" them?

Hi Steven, thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you like the grimoire. I'm actually in the process of making a few new spells, which will get pushed in the next update. No timeline, but join my discord to know when they are done (or jump in for some playtesting/feedback before they are finished!): https://discord.gg/N7MM93a

Regarding Shadow Bind, this was actually one of the earliest spells we made, and rereading it, the wording is a little 'loose'.

It should probably read something like this (I'll clean this up for a future release):

Shadow Bind
2nd-level illusion
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous
Classes: Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard
You take control of the shadow belonging to a creature to restrain its master. Make a ranged spell attack against a creature that you can see within range. On a hit, the target takes 2d6 necrotic damage and becomes grappled by its shadow for 1 minute. The...See more

feel like song of dead and bone storm seem very underwhelming reason song of dead doesn't gain more damage as you level and bone storm is zero damage if you make the save

Hi Zac,
Thanks for the feedback. Bonestorm is comparable to Burning Hands - a bit higher base damage but no damage on a save. Risk vs Reward.
Song of the Dead - you are correct that it doesnt scale with damage, however it affects additional targets, which is quite strong given the rider (removing their reactions).

Thank you for your wonderful work! The grimoire is great!

At pag. 31, "Embers" spell, "Help" section, row 2, there is a misprint, the word "within" is written twice.
Hope to help :)

Mass Vicious Mockery strikes me as weak - a 3rd level spell slot that inflicts disadvantage on (up to) 6 attacks is a fairly solid effect, but the damage is quite low compared to other multitarget spells of that level with negative effects (see: tidal wave, hunger of hadar, spirit guardians). Beyond that, Bane is a fairly similar effect that will hit almost as many targets at 3rd level, though it lacks damage and has concentration, it also deducts from ALL attack rolls (and saving throws!), not just a single attack roll per target. I definitely agree with the desire for some sort of mass vicious mockery, but as it stands now I am unsure if it's really worth it for a Bard to ever use that over just targeting a priority target with the basic version of vicious mockery (which does more damage!).

CREATOR
Hi Michael,

I agree the damage is low, but that is due to the disadvantage effect can be put on targets you select within range. In the spells you mention, they are AOE spells so foes can strategically try to avoid them in subsequent rounds after casting. Also, it may be hard to hit multiple targets with those spells if they are spread out (maybe less so with tidal wave). Psychic damage is also a rare resistance type when compared to cold, poison, etc.

I would love to discuss this (or any other spell) further! Please feel free to join our community discord, which has an ongoing Grimlore's Grimoire play-test channel: https://discord.gg/N7MM93a

I'm concerned about the Tormenting Flame cantrip. This seems to be a much better spell than the 1st level Hellish Rebuke, especially when playing a level 5 Tiefling or above. 3d10; 30 max damage, vs 2d12; 24 max damage. The main differences seem to be that Tormenting Flame forces the caster to make an attack roll, but still, doesn't this seem like a too-good cantrip? Could you explain you reasoning for how you balanced this spell?
Customer avatar
Trevor A May 30, 2019 3:46 am UTC
CREATOR
Hi Evan,

It is a decent cantrip, but as you mention, it is an attack roll instead of a save (may or may not be better vs a given target).

However, the biggest difference is that you can only use with when you are hit with an attack that deals CRITICAL damage. So, approximately once in every twenty times you are hit.

Hey Trevor,

Since you have been creating quite a few spells here on DMsguild, I was wondering how you invent your spells, if it isn't a trade secret ;). Do you use spells from the PHB or other official material as templates or where do you draw your inspiration from?
Customer avatar
Trevor A April 25, 2019 6:06 pm UTC
CREATOR
Hi Kim,

Thanks for your interest and question! There is no trade secret (although I wish there was!!) - I just create custom content in all the games I DM. Through the creation of custom 5e classes and too many NPCs to count, I keep what works and try to polish up the wording. This grimoire represents my best efforts to do so.

Also, I've joined the Sleeper Island RP community (they run one of the most successful West Marches campaigns, discord invite here: https://discord.gg/Vyy3kCM). They have over a thousand users that help me discuss and playtest my material. Awesome community, I'd totally recommend checking them out!

To give a glimpse of my thought process: many of the necromancy spell in the grimoire started with my creation of a new 5e class that deals with undead called the Pale Master (naming holdover from the flavorful 3.5e prestige class!). They focus on necromancy spells, which are somewhat lacking in 5e. This guided me to add more resources for this class, which...See more

Just wondering, but for Battle Beetle, can I ask if the Concentration aspect of it is completely necessary? It just seems far too easily lost as it currently is.
I was kind of hoping it would be more like an up-cast Find Greater Steed, maybe keep the duration if necessary, but add a clause to the spell that says you can only have one at a time and recasting the spell dismisses any that you already have?

Weirdly enough, me and my friends are currently doing a Pseudo Worm game in DnD and I'm making druid Taylor :) And Taylor needs her Atlas!

Hey Daniel,

Battle Beetle is balanced against Conjure Elemental or Summon greater demon and the like. The mammoth is already a CR6, which is fairly strong as it is given a fly speed.

If you were to make this change in your personal game, I would chat with your DM and maybe find a lower CR beast to use for the stat block and remove the concentration requirement. I don't want to change the spell in the supplement, but working with your DM might help you find something that works in your game.

Any idea what sort of creature would be appropriate for the Giant Beetle?

Find Greater Steed is 4th level, so a 6th level might conjure a CR 3 creature instead of CR 2? Possibly CR 4?
Customer avatar

Personally, I would use the statblock of a Giant Scorpion and give it a flying speed. I might also change the types of attacks to be more fitting to a beetle, but its up to you/your DM how much you want to change.

I really love this, and all the work you put into it. A couple of questions: I got the PDF, but any chance it will be a print on demand item at some point? Also, if it ever does become POD, is there way to have the version number in the document itself, and also have an errata somewhere online so that after we get the POD (if it ever happens) we could stay aware of any changes after that version is printed?

Thanks for your hard work, and I hope you're getting a lot of purchases on this, because it damn well deserves it.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the question! For a print version, I think this would need to approach Platinum best-seller, as DMsGuild does not do PoD for every supplement. If we get close to that point, I would certainly love to make that option available.

Regarding version numbers, absolutely that would be possible. However, I think the document would need to be in a finished state (IE very few additional updates) before I would consider PoD.

Honestly, I always considered this a living document, so PoD was not something I've thought about too much - but I wouldn't be opposed to it!

A few questions on Pullulate. How large is the area affected? How many plants grow? What happens if the climate has changed or the area has been "paved over"?
Customer avatar
Trevor A September 14, 2018 2:57 pm UTC
CREATOR
Great questions. The spell indicates a single plant seed, so I would rule whatever type of flower / plant / tree comes from said seed. IE a single plant. The area would be the same as the plant occupied before. If the area / climate changed negatively, I would assume the new plant would die at or before it reaches maturity, but this would be up to the DM.

If the spell just grows one seed, what does extinction have to do with it?

Let's back up- what were you envisioning with Pulluate when you wrote it? What is its purpose and why would druids use it over other spells that grow plants?
Customer avatar
Trevor A September 16, 2018 5:58 am UTC

The vision was more of an RP spell. Maybe regrow the long lost plant that you found a seed. I'm not sure where you mention 'extinction', unless you are looking at an older version?

Pullulate
2nd-level transmutation (ritual)
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (plant seed)
Duration: Instantaneous
Classes: Druid
You plant a seed from a type of plant that used to grow in your current location. Upon touching the ground above the buried seed and speaking a small prayer, the species of the plant begins to regrow, taking 1d4 hours to reach maturity.

I meant local extinction. That is the spell I read, and I still don't get why the phrase "that use to grow in your current location" was included. If it is a spell that makes a plant grow, why does it have to be in a place where its species existed before?

And note this is the only spell that confuses me a bit. The rest are topnotch and I really wish I had thought of Manifest Mimic about 25 years ago.

Thank you for your kind words!

For Pullutate, the idea is that maybe a rare flower or something that was picked but the players found a seed of the plant and they can regrow it - almost a type of spell that can start a quest.

Or Maybe a druid has devoted his life to regrowing a forest that was burned down by a dragon.

Not sure if you updated this as i am looking at 1.25, but the 4th level spell Plague says that a successful Con save extends the duration by 1 hour and that the spell ends when the target makes a successful Con save or dies, whichever comes first. These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
