My InDesign skills are nil and I was wondering what it would take to make the templates for 5.5 inch wide by 8.5 inch tall. I'm repurposing my old paper day planner binder to become my D&D binder. It would begin with my character sheets down to my full background information.

Thank you for any input!

Hi Nathaniel. Great product and I'm enjoying it so far. One thing I'm confused about... how do you change the chapter/subchapter footers to match current chapter? I watched the video and it only shows you changing text in the master page. Obviously that just changes it for all the pages throughout the document. When I try to edit chapter/subchapter text on the actual pages, it is locked and won't let me select it. My apologies if this is a dumb question. I'm fairly new to InDesign.

I would love to tell you it's compatible, but I won't lie to you. I am not a Scribus user, so I just downloaded Scribus (1.5.7) to test importing the .idml file in it, and sadly the software crashed.

Hello there. So I've recently purchased this pack but I'm unfortunately very new to Indesign so I'm having some trouble getting to grips with it. Would you be able to recommend some resources to help get me started or do you have any means yourself?

So for Heading 2 (the one with an underline), how would you change the colour of the the underline? I'm using a slightly different colour page for the background and the default colour doesn't look quite as nice on it.

Right-Click on Heading 2 in the Paragraph Style panel and go to Edit "Heading 2...", then in Paragraph Rules click on the drop down menu to select Rule Below. You can now select a new color swatch in the color field. If there is no color swatch if the color you would like, you can create a new swatch in the swatches panel.

Hey Nathanaël, I only seem to get a B&W template on your latest update. I checked out job options but they export the same. For example, boxed text only shows a line at the top and bottom but no color background. I also don't see the page background textures. Could you help?

Hi Jesse, this is odd, I haven't updated the template since your last questions in February of this year.
Would you mind contacting me via email at: contact (at) barkalotdesigns (dot) com with the names of your version of the template and if possible screenshots of your file before exporting, after exporting and the export settings and I will take a look.

I'm currently learning to use this template as I put together a homebrew sourcebook my friends & I are using for our campaign. I'm finding all kinds of useful things! One thing I can't see in the template is how to make a colour text (read-aloud text) box, only the sidebar. Page 6 of Rime of the Frost Maiden has the type of box I'm looking for at the bottom of the right column. Am I missing something, or is it not in the template? Any instructions how I can change the top bars to side bars of the different design? Thanks!

Hi, for simplicity's sake to make a read-aloud text box I made the paragraph style "Boxed Text", it will give the text a background color (by default light green) and and black borders on the left and the right. It doesn't look exactly the same as what you find in official books, but it far easier to use.
If you're really set on editing the sidebar bars to a different design, feel free to email me at the address provided in the guide and I will go over how to do it with you.

Thanks very much for the quick reply! I'm not set on the bars matching perfectly, the sourcebook is just for my group. The design WotC uses is almost indistinguishable from plain bars anyway, so it doesn't really matter! So long as it's easily distinct from sidebars is all that matters.

Hey friend, I recently started using this template again and looks like there have been some updates. I just had a couple issues. For the sidebar, whenever I change the text on the template, the top and bottom borders disappear, you know the things that give it that ribbon look? Also, I don't see where to get the stat block backgrounds? Thanks!

Hi Jesse, the top and bottom borders of the sidebars are anchored at the beginning of the text frame, if you remove ¥ characters the borders will disappear as explain in the "Sidebar Text Box" section on page 2 of the guide:
"Be careful not to remove the anchors for the top and bottom graphics, they are symbolized by a ¥ when you show Hidden Characters (Ctrl+Alt+I)."
If you wish to change the stat block background color you can do so by editing the object styles. In the Object Style panel [Window -> Styles -> Object Styles (Ctrl+F7)], right-click one of the Stat Block styles and choose "Edit", in the "Fill" tab of the new window you can pick a color swatch to assign to the background. If none of the existing colors fit your needs you can go to the Swatches panel [Window -> Color -> Swatches (F5)] and create your own color swatches.

Ah I see, thanks! I appreciate that you are always available to answer questions. Do you have a shading and border recommendation to match the rulebook as closely as possible?

Also, I found your YouTube video on adding watercolor graphics to the rulebooks, very helpful! Only problem I'm having is that when I go to export as PDF, it just exports a bunch of blank white pages. Have I maybe done something wrong?

Hi, quick question. I'm a bit confused and tried different approaches, but can't determine why it won't open properly. I have a screenshot here how it opens for me, what am I doing wrong exactly? https://imgur.com/a/GqpuXTT

also, while I open it there is a warning "4 links to sources that are missing" that aren't fonts
as well as Freight Sans, Adobe Garamond Pro and Classic Comic Regular fonts not being in the pack, but seem to be used in the template

Hello Alexander, first thank you for your purchase.
From the screenshot the only issue I see are the missing fonts. Freight Sans, Adobe Garamond Pro and Classic Comic Regular are fonts available through the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, I am not at liberty to include them in the download file. If you don't have a subscription, you can replace them with free alternatives: Freight Sans by Lato, Adobe Garamond Pro by EB Garamond and Classic Comic by Comic sans (or other fonts to your liking).
For the 4 links to sources that are missing issue, everything should be included, but can you check your Links panel and tell me which ones have either a red question mark icon or a yellow exclamation mark?

Okay, I just checked the folders uploaded to the DMsGuild, the file should be inside the links folder, it's an Adobe Illustrator file called Page Decorator-Arches.ai, if you don't find it on your computer, have you tried re downloading the files?

Hello - thank you for such a comprehensive and useful template. I notice that in the letter-sized template, the same graphic is used for the left- and right-hand master page backgrounds, while in the A4 template, different graphics are used for each, and for some of the options the right-hand background is noticeably darker than the left-hand one; I'm not sure whether this is intentional. While it is simple enough for users to fix, I thought I'd bring it to your attention, in case this really is an error and you wish to correct the A4 template for future downloaders.

Is this something that I could use to make my own encounters and adventures to be uploaded for others to download? Me and my friend have been using The Homebrewery site to make our own but we want a template set and a guide to making modules, mini adventures and encounters that are quality downloads. If so I will purchase this and any other ones you have to help us. Thank You for your time.

Hello Charles. This is peculiar, the zip shouldn't need anything special. In case your operating system cannot open .zip on it's own, might I suggest a program like for example 7-zip.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
