Boxes of the Magi

Is it possible that a single mage could be curious enough or capable enough to capture the essence of a dying creature’s energy?  No one knows for certain if it was one master mage or a group of arcane collectors who had both the knowledge and curiosity, but the ancient artefacts known as the Boxes of the Magi are now highly sought after and extremely valuable.

Each contains the essence of a creature that must have fought for its survival against the mysterious mages.  Over time these vessels have not only kept their essences intact, they have strengthened their potency, making the contents very powerful.
